That is different from a newsroom using AI for a disclosed, limited task such as transcription or translation. The key questions are whether the person is verifiable, who is accountable for the story, and whether the work is original reporting or recycled material.
What is happening with AI “journalists” in Canada?
The Canadian Press reported that We News displayed AI-generated reporter and editor personas, including “Geneviève Tremblay,” presented as a Quebec correspondent, and “Gordon Halloway,” presented as editor-in-chief. The site republished material across more than 100 Canadian cities, drawing on reporting from established outlets, including Canadian Press stories. The report said the contact email listed on the site bounced when Canadian Press tried it. Those are observations in the October 3, 2026 report, not guarantees about the site’s present availability or contact details. Canadian Press report republished by iNFOnews.
Originality.ai analyzed just over 200 articles credited to Tremblay and identified them as AI-generated. Its CEO, Jon Gillham, described the items as rewritten versions of stories from outlets including CBC, CTV, CityNews, Global and the Montreal Gazette; Canadian Press said it also found its reporting among the sources. This is a reported detector analysis and comparison of source material. It does not establish that AI detectors are conclusive, or that every article was reused in the same way.
The same report said We News appeared absent from Google results during the report’s check but surfaced in another search engine. Search visibility can change, so that is a dated snapshot rather than a stable way to assess the site.

Is every AI byline a fake journalist?
No. The concern in the We News example is not simply that AI may have helped produce text. It is the combination of synthetic identities presented as journalists, limited visible accountability, and reporting that was described as repackaged from real news organizations. A newsroom may also use AI behind the scenes while a named journalist and editor remain responsible for the work. These practices should not be treated as equivalent.
| What to check | AI persona site described in the report | Newsroom using AI assistance |
|---|---|---|
| Disclosure | The report describes AI-generated reporter and editor personas; it does not establish clear disclosure to readers about how each story was made. | Policies and practices vary. The Canadian Association of Journalists identifies transparency as a central consideration. |
| Identity and accountability | Whether the visible persona corresponds to an identifiable journalist is not established; the listed We News email bounced when tested by Canadian Press. | A named journalist, editor, correction process and accountable outlet can make responsibility more visible; check the outlet’s actual policy and article details. |
| Originality | Canadian Press reported repackaged coverage; Originality.ai’s analysis covered just over 200 Tremblay bylines. | AI may support work without replacing original reporting, but readers should assess the article and its sourcing rather than assume. |
| Editorial checks | The report does not establish what independent verification or human oversight We News applies to its stories. | Published policies can specify permitted uses, human review and prohibited editorial tasks; they are not uniform across Canada. |
These are practical comparison questions, not a formal certification test. A polished profile photo or a plausible name is not proof that a journalist exists, and an AI detector score is not proof of authorship or copying.

A separate case shows why identity checks matter
The Canadian Press also described a separate episode involving “Daniel Robson.” Policy Options editor-in-chief Les Perreaux said an editor at Türkiye Today asked him to vouch for Robson, prompting him to question whether the identity was genuine. Canadian outlets later removed Robson’s work after being told he appeared not to be a real person. Türkiye Today reportedly said the persona seemed intended to attack Moroccan dissidents; that proposed motive is Türkiye Today’s account, not an independently established finding. Perreaux emphasized the human impersonation aspect, so the episode should not be reduced to a claim that AI alone caused the deception. Canadian Press report republished by iNFOnews.
How do Canadian newsrooms use AI?
Use ranges from operational assistance to disputed editorial applications, and organizations have not adopted one universal policy. The Canadian Association of Journalists says newsrooms use AI for tasks including research, transcription, translation, analysis of large document sets, lead discovery, production and audience management. It developed “AI Ethics Guardrails,” identifying transparency, privacy, security, humanity and accountability as relevant pillars. Canadian Association of Journalists: AI Ethics Guardrails.

CPAC’s published boundaries
CPAC says it permits AI support for translation, transcription, closed captioning, internal communications and technical functions. It says it will not use AI for research, fact-checking, scripting, editorial image or video generation, or to perform journalists’, producers’ or on-air talent’s work. CPAC also commits to transparency and human oversight. This is CPAC’s policy, not a rule binding other Canadian newsrooms. CPAC’s AI policy.
What broadcasters said at a 2025 hearing
At a CRTC hearing on May 23, 2025, Rogers Media executive Colette Watson said the company was updating its editorial policy so a reporter’s standup would not be written by AI, and described strict limits on generative AI. A representative of another broadcaster described early AI experiments in accessibility captioning but said they had not yet met its quality standards. These are dated remarks, not evidence of current policy at every broadcaster. CRTC hearing transcript, May 23, 2025.

The distinction readers should look for is not simply “AI used” versus “AI not used.” Ask whether the outlet says what the tool did, who checked the output, who takes responsibility, and whether the journalist’s identity and reporting can be verified.

- 70% were concerned about inaccuracies in news stories due to AI.
- 78% worried generative AI could spread misinformation and disinformation.
- 85% wanted newsrooms to be transparent about AI use.
- Three quarters advocated labelling AI-generated content.
The same 2025 report said half of Canadians surveyed in a 2023 Canadian Journalism Foundation study were not confident they could distinguish AI-generated content from human-created content. These figures describe stated concerns and preferences; they do not measure how many fake-journalist sites operate in Canada. The report also relayed an October 2024 KPMG survey of more than 800 Canadian news organizations: KPMG said 61% had implemented generative AI tools and 89% considered the technology extremely or very important to competitive advantage. Those adoption figures do not mean that those organizations publish AI-generated journalist personas. Competition Bureau Canada and CRTC: Synthetic media and news reporting in Canada.
How can you check whether a journalist or story is genuine?
- Look beyond the byline. Check whether the outlet identifies an editor, provides a working way to contact it, and has a correction policy. A single failed contact attempt, as in the Canadian Press report, is a warning sign to investigate, not proof by itself that a site is false.
- Verify the person independently. Search for a consistent professional history, previous work at identifiable outlets, and a profile on the publication’s own site. If the story relies on an interview or source, look for confirmation from that person or organization.
- Compare distinctive details. Search a distinctive sentence or factual detail from the article. If the same reporting appears earlier at another outlet, check whether the newer page clearly attributes or links to the original. Similarity alone does not settle whether reuse was authorized or how the text was produced.
- Check sourcing and corrections. Look for named sources, links to documents or primary material, and evidence that claims were independently checked. Notice whether corrections are dated and visible.
- Read AI disclosures cautiously. A useful disclosure says what AI did and what a human verified. A detector result or an AI-sounding style can raise questions, but neither establishes who wrote a story.
What do Canadian law and regulators say?
The Online News Act defines “news content” as content in any format that reports on, investigates or explains current public-interest issues or events. It also defines digital news intermediaries to include certain online platforms that make news outlet content available in Canada; the Act’s stated aim is to enhance fairness and sustainability in Canada’s digital news marketplace. The statutory text reviewed does not set out a specific remedy for AI-generated journalist personas or settle the copyright questions raised by the We News report. Online News Act.
The Competition Bureau Canada and CRTC’s 2025 report says the CRTC does not directly control what news content is produced or journalism generally. It describes the regulator’s role in access to news and current-affairs programming, broadcasting incentives and contributions, and implementation of parts of the Online News Act. That report also discussed CRTC study of AI’s potential in audio during a proceeding to modernize radio and audio-streaming policy; the description should not be read as confirmation that the proceeding remains ongoing.
In the Canadian Press report, the office of AI minister Evan Solomon said Canadians should know when information they consume has been generated or altered by AI and should not be deceived by content impersonating journalists or concealing how it was made. The office pointed to a recently concluded consultation on AI transparency and acknowledged creators’ concerns about consent, compensation, attribution and transparency. That statement is not evidence that a new disclosure law has been enacted. Canadian Press report republished by iNFOnews.
Why are these sites difficult to address?
Simon Fraser University professor Ahmed Al-Rawi characterized fake-journalist sites as a way to monetize content and repackage the work of real journalists. Western University assistant professor of journalism Chris Arsenault said low-cost or free AI models and easy access to hosting make such operations easier to launch. News Media Canada president Paul Deegan said copyright protects news content, but litigation can be costly and slow, particularly when operators are outside Canada; the report said We News claims to be based in Hong Kong. These are attributed assessments, not a court finding that We News infringed copyright or a determination of its legal status.
