AI Job Interviews Are Here—and People Are Already Trying to Break Them

Yes, employers already use AI in recruitment screening, job simulations, behavioral assessments and some interview stages. Candidates also use generative AI to prepare—and, increasingly, to generate answers live or impersonate other people. Preparing with AI is generally legitimate when it is allowed and done before the assessment; covert live assistance or identity fraud defeats what the interview is meant to measure.

What an AI job interview actually is

“AI interview” can describe several different systems. An employer may use software to rank applications, administer an online job simulation, score a behavioral assessment or conduct an interview stage with an automated interviewer. In many deployments, a recruiter or hiring manager still reviews the result before a decision is made.

That distinction matters. An automated screen may look for evidence of required skills, while a structured interview system may ask the same competencies of every applicant. Neither automatically proves that a person is unsuitable or suitable. The output is an assessment signal that should be checked against work samples, conversation and the requirements of the role.

How candidates are trying to break the process

Live answer generation

A candidate can place a generative AI tool beside the interview and feed it each question for an answer to read or paraphrase. This can make a person appear more knowledgeable, faster or more articulate than they are without assistance. A peer-reviewed study of AI-assisted video interviewing found meaningful performance differences between assisted and unassisted conditions, treating the effect as a threat to assessment validity.

Impersonation and fabricated identities

Interview fraud can involve another person posing as the applicant, an applicant posing as someone else or a synthetic identity assembled from invented details. Gartner’s 2025 survey found that 6% of respondents admitted to interview fraud, defining it as posing as someone else or having someone else pose as the candidate.

Applications engineered for automated filters

Generative systems can produce polished résumés and profiles tailored to a particular vacancy. In a 2025 case study, OpenAI described a deceptive employment scheme using fabricated candidate personas, tailored AI-generated résumés and AI-generated answers to technical and behavioral questions. The company said these materials were frequently customized to a specific listing to improve the chance of appearing qualified.

How common is undisclosed AI use?

Gartner reported that 39% of candidates used AI during the application process in its 2024 survey. That figure includes uses that may be legitimate, such as drafting or practice, as well as uses an employer may prohibit. It should not be read as a fraud rate.

Evidence presented to the UK Parliament in 2025 was more specific about assessment misconduct: 61% of employer respondents identified undisclosed or unauthorized AI use during interviews as the most common form of cheating. Only 15% said they had never suspected or identified assessment cheating. These are employer reports, not a measurement of every applicant, but they show why hiring teams are treating interview integrity as an operational problem.

Why generative AI makes the integrity problem worse

Automated screening lets one employer process a large applicant pool. Generative tools can then create convincing applications and responsive answers at low cost. The two capabilities create a mismatch: a high score may reflect job ability, prompt skill, coaching or impersonation. If the employer cannot tell which factor produced the result, the assessment is no longer measuring the competency it claims to measure.

That failure affects both sides. An honest applicant can lose to someone receiving hidden assistance, while an employer can hire a person who cannot perform without the tool used during the interview. A false positive is also possible: a nervous but capable applicant may be flagged because an automated process interprets communication style or identity data poorly.

Benefits and risks of AI-mediated interviews

Dimension Potential benefit Risk or limitation
Consistency and scale Hybrid systems can standardize early assessments and handle high application volumes. Uniform questions do not guarantee a valid or unbiased measurement.
Candidate experience An immediate automated interviewer may reduce anxiety for some people and offer flexible completion. An undisclosed machine interview can feel impersonal or opaque, especially when no explanation or human contact follows.
Validity Structured prompts can focus on job-related competencies. Live answer generation, coaching during the session and fabricated identities can invalidate the score.
Fairness and privacy Consistent administration can reduce some forms of interviewer inconsistency. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has warned about risks such as inferring gender or ethnicity from names and has issued data-protection recommendations for recruitment-tool developers and recruiters.
Human judgment Automation can leave recruiters more time for substantive conversations. Human oversight remains important for interaction, soft skills, context and cultural contribution.

How employers can detect and deter cheating

No single “AI detector” can establish that a candidate cheated. Employers need controls that protect the assessment without turning every applicant into a suspect.

  1. Tell candidates where AI is used. State whether software screens applications, records video, evaluates answers or generates questions. Explain what is scored and who reviews the result.
  2. Set an explicit assistance policy. Distinguish permitted preparation from prohibited live answer generation, outside coaching and another person’s participation. Give candidates a way to ask for clarification before the interview.
  3. Obtain appropriate consent and protect data. Explain recording, retention, access and deletion practices. Document accommodations so an accessibility adjustment is not mistaken for misconduct.
  4. Keep a trained human in consequential decisions. Automated scores should trigger review, not serve as the sole reason to reject someone. Reviewers should know the system’s limits and look for job-related evidence.
  5. Use identity-assured and work-sample stages. For roles where identity and practical skill matter, add a live conversation, supervised task or other identity-verified step. Gartner recommends a multi-layer fraud-mitigation strategy that includes recruiter awareness and safeguards such as in-person interviews.
  6. Vary questions and probe reasoning. Follow a prepared answer with a new scenario, ask the candidate to explain trade-offs or request a short demonstration. The goal is to test understanding, not to create gotcha questions.
  7. Monitor outcomes. Check for disparate impact across groups, investigate unusual score patterns and review whether the assessment predicts performance. Correct or retire a tool that cannot be shown to be job-related and defensible.

What candidates can do without crossing the line

Before the interview

  • Use an AI assistant to rehearse common questions, generate sensible follow-up questions and receive feedback on clarity.
  • Build several genuine STAR examples (situation, task, action and result) from your own experience, then practice adapting them to different prompts.
  • Use official preparation materials supplied by the employer when available. The peer-reviewed AVI study identifies chatbot coaching and formal interview-preparation tools as honest preparation routes.
  • Read the invitation carefully. It should say whether an automated interviewer is involved and whether any tools are allowed; ask before the session if the policy is unclear.

During the interview

  • Answer from your own knowledge and experience unless the employer expressly permits assistance.
  • Disclose any permitted tool or accommodation in the manner the employer requests.
  • Do not use covert real-time answer generation, ask another person to participate or manipulate your identity. Those actions change who is being assessed.

Are AI video interviews fair?

Fairness depends on the complete process, not merely whether the interviewer is human or software. Employers should test whether questions and scoring are related to the job, provide reasonable accommodations, explain automated processing and offer a meaningful human review route.

Privacy is part of fairness. An employer that records a face or voice, extracts behavioral signals or infers sensitive characteristics must have a lawful, transparent reason for doing so and should minimize retention. The ICO’s warnings about inferring gender or ethnicity from names illustrate why seemingly simple profile data can create disproportionate risk.

Can AI take your job interview?

AI can conduct or score part of an interview, but current evidence does not establish that it should make a hiring decision alone. The safer model is hybrid: automation for structured, high-volume work; trained people for context, follow-up, accommodations and the final judgment. For candidates, AI is a useful coach before the interview, not a substitute for the person being assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I ask before an AI interview?

Ask whether an automated system will record or score you, what kinds of assistance are permitted, how a human will review the result, how long recordings are retained and how to request an accessibility accommodation.

Can an employer reject me for using AI to prepare?

Preparation is different from hidden assistance during the assessment. Employers should publish a clear policy; using AI to rehearse, organize examples or generate practice questions is normally distinct from generating answers while the interview is underway.

What if an automated interview flags me unfairly?

Request the employer’s human-review or appeal route, provide relevant context and ask how accommodations were considered. Employers should not treat an automated score as conclusive without checking job relevance and potential disparate impact.
