U.S. stocks suffered their worst session since July on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after a hotter-than-expected September inflation report pushed Treasury yields higher and revived speculation that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates. The S&P 500 fell 1.1%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.1%.
What triggered the selloff
The immediate catalyst was the September consumer-price report. Consumer prices were 3.7% higher than a year earlier, accelerating from 3.4% in August and exceeding the 3.6% economist consensus cited by the Associated Press. The increase suggested that inflation was not cooling as quickly as investors had expected.

That matters for markets because persistent inflation can keep monetary policy restrictive for longer. Instead of focusing only on eventual rate cuts, traders had to consider whether another increase could return to the Federal Reserve’s range of plausible choices.

The losses were broad, but the larger decline in the Nasdaq showed that investors were selling the market’s most rate-sensitive growth companies more aggressively than mature, less richly valued shares.

Why Treasury yields jumped
The 10-year Treasury yield briefly climbed above 5.32%, compared with below 5.17% immediately before the inflation release, according to the Associated Press. Ground News later cited a 5.23% level. The 5.32% figure is an intraday peak, while 5.23% is a later reported snapshot; neither should be read as the session’s closing yield without additional closing data.
Bond yields rose because traders demanded more compensation for the possibility of higher inflation and a less accommodative Fed. Ground News reported that CME-implied odds of a rate increase at the next Fed meeting rose to 39%, up from 22% the previous day. Those are market-implied probabilities, not a Federal Reserve commitment or an official forecast.

How higher rates pressure growth stocks
Investors value a company partly by estimating its future cash flows and discounting them back to today. When the risk-free Treasury yield rises, that discount rate generally rises as well. Cash flows expected many years in the future then have a lower present value.
The effect is strongest for companies whose valuations depend on rapid profit growth far ahead. A profitable, slower-growing company may have more of its value in near-term earnings; a high-growth technology company may depend on assumptions about sales and margins several years out. A sudden yield jump can therefore reduce the price investors are willing to pay even when a company’s immediate results have not changed.

Why AI-linked shares led the decline
Companies associated with the artificial-intelligence boom had posted substantial gains and carried high expectations for future profit growth. The combination of higher discount rates and questions about the cost and payoff of the AI infrastructure buildout made those shares especially vulnerable.

The declines do not establish that demand for AI hardware has collapsed. They show that investors were reassessing valuation and financing conditions at the same time they questioned whether enormous AI capital expenditures will generate adequate returns.

Company-specific news also moved individual stocks
The inflation shock did not determine every stock’s performance. Bank of America fell 6.3% after reporting weaker third-quarter profit and revenue and news of a reported $1.2 billion U.S. Treasury Department fine. BlackRock rose 0.5% on stronger earnings, demonstrating that favorable company results could outweigh the day’s macroeconomic pressure for some businesses.

- Upcoming inflation readings: Another acceleration would reinforce concerns that price pressures are proving persistent; a slowdown could reduce the urgency of further tightening.
- Treasury yields: The 10-year yield’s ability to remain above or retreat from the 5% area will influence valuation pressure on long-duration growth stocks.
- Fed communication: Officials’ speeches and meeting guidance will show whether the higher market-implied hike probability is consistent with policymakers’ own assessment.
- AI earnings and spending: Investors will look for evidence that data-center and accelerator spending is producing revenue and profit rather than only expanding capital budgets.
- Company results: Earnings surprises, guidance and regulatory events can offset or amplify the broader market move.
The October 14 session combined a clear inflation surprise with a rapid repricing of interest-rate risk. Technology and AI shares bore the heaviest pressure because their valuations rely more heavily on distant growth, while company-specific results determined which stocks diverged from the broader selloff.
