AI is taking over a growing share of routine website work, and that is putting real pressure on low-complexity freelance gigs. It can generate landing-page layouts, marketing copy and boilerplate code faster than a person starting from scratch. But the available evidence does not show that web development as an occupation has collapsed. It shows a market moving away from simple implementation and toward specification, integration, testing, business judgment and accountability.
Business owners are adopting these tools quickly and often report a smoother process. That is not the same as proving that every AI-built site performs well, converts better or can replace an experienced developer.

What the latest numbers actually show
The strongest signal is task-level disruption, not the disappearance of an entire profession. These figures come from surveys, platform analysis and government projections, so they measure different things and should not be treated as one employment index.
| Measure | Reported result | Source and date | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small-business use of generative AI | 58% in 2025, compared with 40% in 2024 and 23% in 2023 | U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 2025 | Adoption is accelerating across ordinary business operations. |
| Small businesses with a website | 83% in 2025 | Clutch, 2025 | Most small firms already need a website, creating a large market for building and maintaining one. |
| Who handled website development | 45% outsourced, 37% handled in-house, 8% built by the owner | Clutch, 2025 | Owners are involved, but most development still includes either staff or outside specialists. |
| SMB demand for AI and machine-learning skills on a freelance platform | Up 40% in August 2025 | Upwork Research Institute, 2025 | Demand is shifting toward freelancers who can use AI, not simply away from freelancers. |
| Earnings for jobs with coding in at least 25% of the work | 11% higher than in November 2022 | Upwork Research Institute, 2025 | Coding-related work has not become uniformly worthless; its value depends on the work around the code. |
| Completion speed with an AI coding assistant | 55% faster in an OECD-cited study | OECD, 2024 | Routine implementation can be delivered much more quickly, putting its standalone price under pressure. |
| Projected employment for web developers and digital designers | 5% growth from 2025 to 2035 | U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2026 | U.S. employment is still projected to grow, although AI may reduce the pace. |
| Web designers using AI to help build sites | 46%; 88% reported a positive process impact | Squarespace Circle industry survey, 2026 | Many practitioners feel more productive, but this is a company-sponsored survey rather than a census of the profession. |
| Designers comfortable with AI handling any work-related task | 5% | Squarespace Circle industry survey, 2026 | Positive workflow effects do not mean broad trust in handing over complete responsibility. |
Upwork also reported more than 1 million U.S. jobs posted annually on its platform. That volume is not a guarantee of work for any individual freelancer, but it helps explain why a shift in the mix of assignments can feel severe even while total opportunity remains substantial.

Why routine web gigs are being repriced
AI removes much of the typing
A landing page, product-description set, basic content-management theme or small JavaScript interaction can now be drafted from a plain-language brief. The OECD-cited 55% speed improvement for GitHub Copilot users illustrates the economic effect: when a task takes half as long, clients are less willing to pay solely for keystrokes.
The pressure is greatest when the brief is narrow, the design is conventional, the integrations are common and the client can judge the result immediately. Those assignments are easier to describe, automate and compare on a marketplace.

Demand is moving up the stack
Businesses still need someone to decide what should be built, connect systems, verify that data flows correctly and take responsibility when something fails. Upwork’s 40% increase in small-business demand for AI and machine-learning skills in August 2025 is evidence of that change in purchasing, not proof that all freelance work is disappearing.

Cheap production is not the same as a finished product
Generated code can look complete while omitting accessibility states, error handling, secure authentication, payment safeguards, privacy controls, analytics events or a maintainable deployment process. A site that works in a demo but fails during a checkout, account recovery or traffic spike creates costs that were invisible in the initial quote.

Are business owners really happy with AI-built websites?
Owners are clearly adopting AI, and many report useful results. Henry’s House of Coffee owner Hrag Kalebjian told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce: “AI has been a game-changer for Henry’s House of Coffee, allowing us to streamline tasks like product descriptions, SEO, and marketing emails.” That is a credible example of productivity in content and marketing work, not evidence that AI independently delivered the company’s entire web operation.
Clutch’s 2025 data also shows that owners have more options than they did when a professional site required a large in-house team. Clutch web-design lead Jeanette Godreau said: “Small businesses no longer require a large budget or in-house developer to build a professional website.” The statement describes lower barriers to entry; it does not establish a universal satisfaction rate, revenue lift or long-term reliability.

A separate Squarespace Circle survey found that 55% of surveyed entrepreneurs used AI to create website copy. Among surveyed web designers, 88% reported a positive effect on their process, while only 5% were comfortable with AI handling any work-related task. The qualified conclusion is that AI is popular as an assistant and accelerator, not that owners want to surrender every decision.
Three practical ways to build a site now
AI self-service
- Upfront cost and speed: Usually the lowest-cost and fastest route because the owner supplies the brief, reviews generated content and publishes the result.
- Customization: Strong for standard pages and modest branding; limited when the business needs unusual workflows or a distinctive interaction model.
- Security and integrations: The owner must verify forms, permissions, payment connections, privacy settings, backups and third-party data flows.
- SEO and content: AI can produce a first draft, but factual accuracy, local relevance, original expertise and search intent still require human editing.
- Maintenance and accountability: Responsibility remains with the owner unless a support arrangement is added. Edge cases often surface only after launch.
An AI-assisted freelancer
- Upfront cost and speed: Faster than fully manual development because the freelancer can use AI for drafts and repetitive implementation, while still charging for discovery, review and delivery.
- Customization: Better suited to a brand-specific design, custom components and connections between business tools.
- Security and integrations: The freelancer can test and document the implementation, but the contract should identify who owns credentials, data protection and future fixes.
- SEO and content: A human can align pages with the company’s audience, verify claims and set up measurable analytics rather than publishing unedited text.
- Maintenance and accountability: Clear scope, response times and ownership matter more than whether AI was used behind the scenes.
Traditional custom development
- Upfront cost and speed: Generally the slowest and most expensive option because requirements, architecture, testing and documentation receive more attention.
- Customization: The strongest choice for complex products, unusual business rules, high-volume traffic or specialized user experiences.
- Security and integrations: A dedicated team can design controls and testing around the specific risk profile, though no process guarantees perfect security.
- SEO and content: Strategy, information architecture and technical performance can be planned together with editorial work.
- Maintenance and accountability: Best when the project includes a defined support relationship, monitoring and a plan for upgrades.
There is no universal price boundary between these approaches. The sensible choice depends on the cost of failure: a brochure site with no sensitive data is different from a system handling payments, health information, customer accounts or operational records.
Best Value
What AI should not own without human review
- Authentication, authorization and account-recovery logic
- Payment processing, refunds and financial calculations
- Collection, storage and sharing of personal data
- Accessibility semantics, keyboard operation and screen-reader behavior
- Analytics definitions and consent management
- Dependency updates, deployment configuration and backups
- Load, failure and security testing
- Claims about products, services, prices or regulated topics
AI can draft each of these areas, but a person with the right expertise must inspect the result against requirements and test it in the environment where customers will use it.
What this means for freelance web developers
The most vulnerable offer is “I will write a standard page” with no discovery, measurable outcome or continuing responsibility. A stronger offer packages implementation with decisions clients cannot safely automate: requirements workshops, information architecture, integration design, accessibility checks, testing, deployment and maintenance.
Developers who use AI effectively can deliver routine pieces faster, then spend the saved time on review and higher-value work. The 11% earnings increase reported for jobs containing substantial coding is consistent with that broader role. It does not mean every coding job pays more, only that coding remains valuable when it is part of a larger solution.

- Define the site’s job: publish information, capture leads, sell products, manage accounts or run a business process.
- List sensitive data, payment flows, required integrations and legal or accessibility obligations.
- Choose self-service only when the consequences of a mistake are limited and someone can maintain the site.
- Use an AI-assisted freelancer when you need speed plus a named person responsible for testing and handoff.
- Commission custom development when unusual rules, high risk or long-term scale justify the additional planning.
- Before launch, test forms, mobile layouts, keyboard navigation, analytics, backups, permissions and failure messages.
- Agree in writing who owns the domain, source code, accounts, generated content and future fixes.
The bottom line
AI is making routine web production faster and cheaper, so low-complexity coding gigs are getting harder to sell on labor alone. That is a painful adjustment for freelancers whose offer stops at implementation. It is not evidence that web development has vanished: U.S. employment is still projected to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, and businesses continue to need people who can specify, integrate, test and stand behind a system.
Business owners are often happy with AI’s help on copy, layouts and repetitive tasks. The evidence does not support saying they are universally happy with AI-built websites or that owners prefer automation for every responsibility. The durable advantage belongs to the workflow that combines fast generation with human judgment where errors are expensive.
