AI Is Getting Smarter; Coherence Is Getting Harder

AI systems are improving on difficult tests and reducing factual errors, yet they can still contradict themselves within a single answer or change their rules when a problem’s context shifts. The apparent paradox disappears when capability and coherence are measured separately: capability is success on an individual task, while coherence is maintaining compatible claims, rules and uncertainty across an entire interaction.

That distinction matters whenever an answer involves several steps, changing conditions or a decision about whether the model has enough evidence to answer at all.

What “AI coherence” means

A coherent model keeps its statements mutually compatible as a conversation develops. It applies the same rule to equivalent cases, updates a conclusion when a premise changes, and signals uncertainty instead of quietly replacing a missing fact with a guess.

Coherence is therefore broader than factual accuracy. A response can end with the correct answer while its explanation contains contradictions, unsupported jumps or rules that would fail on the next example. Conversely, a model that declines to answer an uncertain question may be more coherent than one that produces a confident but false claim.

Capability is improving on several measurable axes

Recent results show real progress, but the figures are reported by the organisations that developed or evaluated the systems and are not independent head-to-head measurements.

Evidence Reported result What it demonstrates
OpenAI production-traffic prompts with web search (2025) GPT-5 responses were about 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT-4o. Lower observed factual-error rates on that prompt sample and tool setup.
OpenAI comparison (2025) GPT-5 with reasoning was about 80% less likely to contain a factual error than o3. Reasoning mode can improve factual reliability under the reported conditions.
OpenAI LongFact and FActScore (2025) GPT-5 produced about six times fewer hallucinations than o3. Better performance on long-form factuality evaluations.
SELF-DISCOVER, Google DeepMind (2024) Improved GPT-4 and PaLM-2 by as much as 30% on challenging reasoning benchmarks; beat inference-intensive comparison methods by more than 20% across 24 tasks while using 10–40 times less inference compute. A structured reasoning scaffold can raise scores without proportionally increasing inference cost.

These gains are important, but none establishes that a model will preserve one consistent set of assumptions across a long, changing interaction. Benchmark success is usually aggregated over separate tasks; coherence is tested across dependencies between steps.

Why compositional and contextual problems remain difficult

ARC-AGI-2’s 2025 technical report isolates a sharp bottleneck. At publication, leading systems scored below 5% on ARC-AGI-2, while comparable systems achieved 20–50% on ARC-AGI-1. The newer tasks are difficult because several rules may interact, symbols may need semantic interpretation, and a rule may have to change according to context.

Interacting rules

A system can apply each rule correctly in isolation and still fail when both must operate at once. The report states that reasoning systems struggle with “the simultaneous application of multiple rules, especially when there are rules that interact.” In practical use, the same pattern appears when a policy has exceptions, priorities and dependencies rather than one instruction.

Context-dependent rules

Many prompts look similar on the surface but require different operations after one detail changes. ARC Prize reports that systems struggle when “rules must be applied differently based on context.” This is a generalisation problem: the model recognises familiar patterns but does not reliably infer which condition activates which rule.

Longer explanations can conceal an inconsistent path

More tokens of reasoning are not automatically more reliable. Wang, Su, Ai and Liu’s AAAI 2026 work describes reasoning traces that can be redundant or logically inconsistent and can introduce hallucinations even when the final answer appears correct.

Their RACE evaluation checks four properties that a final-answer score misses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Trace consistency: whether successive steps agree with one another.
  • Answer uncertainty: whether confidence matches the available evidence.
  • Semantic alignment: whether the reasoning actually addresses the question.
  • Internal coherence: whether the complete explanation forms a compatible argument.

This is why inspecting only the last sentence is unsafe for high-stakes work. A correct conclusion reached through contradictory premises may fail as soon as a user asks for a modification, a justification or an edge case.

Leaderboards can reward guessing over coherence

Scoring rules influence model behaviour. OpenAI’s 2025 SimpleQA example contrasts two systems:

System Abstention Accuracy Error
gpt-5-thinking-mini 52% 22% 26%
o4-mini 1% 24% 75%

On an accuracy-only leaderboard, o4-mini appears slightly better because it answers almost every question. It also makes far more false claims. The example shows why calibrated abstention is part of coherence: a model should distinguish “I have evidence” from “I can produce a plausible sentence.” OpenAI’s analysis puts the broader issue plainly: “It is not enough to add a few new uncertainty-aware tests on the side.”

How to check whether an AI explanation is consistent

  1. List the premises. Ask the model to state the facts, definitions and assumptions it is using before it concludes.
  2. Probe an edge case. Change one condition while keeping the rest constant. A coherent system should identify which rule changes and which do not.
  3. Request a contradiction check. Ask it to compare every major claim with earlier claims, rather than merely asking whether the answer is correct.
  4. Separate evidence from inference. Require quotations, calculations or cited source passages for externally verifiable points, and label deductions as deductions.
  5. Test uncertainty. Ask what information would make the answer change and whether the model should abstain without it.
  6. Re-run with the same facts in a different order. Large changes indicate sensitivity to presentation rather than stable reasoning.

For consequential decisions, keep an audit trail of the prompt, supplied documents, model version, tool results and any revisions. Reproducibility makes a contradiction discoverable instead of letting a polished final paragraph conceal it.

What the trend means for users and developers

For users

  • Treat lower hallucination rates as risk reduction, not a guarantee of truth.
  • Prefer answers that show assumptions and uncertainty when the question is ambiguous.
  • Break multi-step work into checkpoints so a mistaken premise is caught before it propagates.
  • Ask for alternative interpretations when a rule, exception or symbol could have more than one meaning.

For developers and evaluators

  • Measure consistency across turns and perturbations, not only single-answer accuracy.
  • Include tasks with interacting rules, context changes and explicit opportunities to abstain.
  • Score unsupported assertions as errors and reward appropriate refusal separately from simple non-response.
  • Inspect reasoning traces for contradictions, while remembering that a longer trace is not proof of soundness.
  • Report the prompt set, tools, model mode and date with every benchmark number; OpenAI’s GPT-5 figures, for example, depend on anonymised production prompts and web search.

The practical bottom line

AI is getting better at answering hard, well-defined questions and at avoiding some factual mistakes. Coherence remains harder because real tasks combine rules, contexts, uncertainty and long chains of dependency. The reliable standard is not merely “Did the model get this answer right?” but “Did it use compatible assumptions, adapt the right rule when context changed, and know when it lacked enough evidence to answer?”
