AI infrastructure buying guide: GPUs, servers, networking, storage, and support

The right AI infrastructure purchase starts with the workload, not a GPU model. Document whether you will train, fine-tune, infer, or run a mixture; the size of models and datasets; peak concurrent jobs; latency targets; and expected utilization. Then size the complete system: accelerator memory and scale, server design, GPU and network fabrics, storage I/O, software, facilities, support, and lifecycle operations. A GPU-only comparison can leave the cluster starved for data, unable to scale across nodes, or unsupported in production.

Integrated clusters, qualified server systems, and cloud GPU access can all be valid. The best route depends on data location, utilization, staffing, governance, facility readiness, and how quickly capacity is needed. Available vendor architecture material describes designs and components, but it does not establish a universal price winner, performance ranking, or ownership break-even point.

What counts as AI infrastructure?

An enterprise AI environment is a system of cooperating layers rather than a stack of accelerator cards. A typical reference architecture contains:

  • Accelerator compute: GPUs or other accelerators with enough high-bandwidth memory for the model, activations, optimizer state, and batch size.
  • Server platform: CPU, system memory, PCIe or equivalent expansion, local boot and scratch storage, power delivery, cooling, and the chassis needed to host the accelerators.
  • Intra-node communication: high-speed links between accelerators in one server, with a topology that affects collective operations.
  • Inter-node fabrics: a compute network for distributed training or inference, plus storage, management, and out-of-band networks.
  • Storage: high-performance shared storage for training data and checkpoints, and separate user, home-directory, log, or general file services where appropriate.
  • Software and operations: drivers, firmware, GPU libraries, frameworks, schedulers, container tooling, monitoring, provisioning, recovery, and access controls.
  • Facilities and support: power, cooling, rack space, cabling, commissioning, spare parts, escalation, and defined ownership of every layer.

NVIDIA’s DGX reference architectures illustrate this integrated approach with GPU servers, separate network roles, shared storage, management software, scheduling, and support. They are architecture examples for particular generations, not a universal bill of materials.

Start by writing a workload specification

Before requesting quotes, turn application demand into measurable requirements. A vendor’s peak FLOPS figure does not tell you whether your model will fit in memory, whether data can be delivered quickly enough, or whether a multi-node job will scale efficiently.

Classify the primary workload

  • Pre-training: usually requires many accelerators, high-bandwidth collectives, sustained storage throughput, and a checkpoint strategy that can recover from failures.
  • Fine-tuning: may use fewer accelerators than pre-training, but memory requirements vary with sequence length, optimizer choice, parameter-efficient methods, and batch size.
  • Inference: is governed by throughput, latency, model residency, request concurrency, and service-level objectives. A configuration optimized for training may be uneconomical for low-volume, latency-sensitive serving.
  • Mixed use: training, evaluation, batch inference, and interactive serving compete for capacity. Define isolation or scheduling policies before sizing a shared cluster.

Record the numbers that drive capacity

  • Model parameter count, precision formats, context or sequence length, and expected growth.
  • Dataset size, file formats, preprocessing cost, checkpoint size, and retention period.
  • Target batch size, tokens or samples per second, training time objective, and acceptable scaling efficiency.
  • Peak simultaneous users or jobs, burst behavior, and minimum guaranteed capacity.
  • Latency targets for the 50th, 95th, and 99th percentiles when serving requests.
  • Data-residency, encryption, tenancy, and regulatory requirements.
  • Expected utilization by hour, week, and season rather than an optimistic average.

Use representative traces or a small pilot to validate these assumptions. Generation-specific examples in vendor references are useful for understanding architecture, but they are not an independent sizing model for your application.

Choose the accelerator and software platform together

Compare the accelerator, server qualification, memory capacity, interconnect, software ecosystem, and operating model as one decision. A nominally faster device can be the wrong choice if your framework, kernels, communication libraries, or support team are not ready for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to ask about each platform

  • How much usable accelerator memory is available after system reservations, and can the model fit without excessive offload?
  • What links connect accelerators inside a node, and how are collectives implemented?
  • Which frameworks, compiler versions, communication libraries, and container images are validated for your application?
  • How are drivers, firmware, security patches, and GPU libraries tested and rolled back?
  • Does the scheduler understand GPU partitioning, reservations, topology, preemption, and failure recovery?
  • Who owns application enablement when a model update exposes a driver or kernel issue?

NVIDIA-based routes

NVIDIA’s DGX H200 and B300 references show integrated systems in which compute, fabric, storage, and management are designed together. The H200 material describes Base Command Manager and related operational tooling. NVIDIA’s 2026 training guidance also describes Mission Control and Run:ai in a recommended operations stack. Treat those names as components to evaluate against your existing scheduler, identity system, observability tools, and support contracts, not as proof that one stack is universally best.

The B300 reference architecture states that aggregated HBM3e capacity is 2.1 TB for its described architecture. That figure is tied to the B300 design and should not be generalized to other generations, server configurations, or usable application memory.

AMD-based routes

AMD documents Instinct server platforms and ROCm software, along with several paths for developers, enterprises, startups, researchers, and workstation developers to evaluate the ecosystem. Confirm that your exact framework versions, custom kernels, quantization path, monitoring tools, and support contacts are covered before committing. The available material does not provide a neutral performance or total-cost comparison between AMD and NVIDIA.

Size the server, not just the card

A server quote should identify the complete node configuration: accelerator count and model, CPU sockets and cores, system memory, local NVMe or equivalent scratch capacity, PCIe generation and lane allocation, network adapters, power supplies, cooling design, and supported firmware. Ask for the topology diagram showing which accelerators and network adapters share buses or switches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-node workloads

If the model and batch fit within one server, a single node avoids inter-node synchronization and may simplify operations. It still needs adequate local data staging, checkpoint space, and network bandwidth to shared storage. Verify that all accelerators can operate at their intended power and thermal limits simultaneously; a chassis that accepts a card is not necessarily validated for sustained full-load operation.

Multi-node workloads

Distributed training introduces synchronization traffic, collective operations, failure domains, and scheduling constraints. Request a node count based on measured scaling for your model, not on theoretical accelerator totals. The quote should state the number and type of compute adapters, port speeds, switch radix, cabling and transceivers, oversubscription, topology, and resiliency. Include a plan for replacing a failed node or link without taking the whole environment offline.

Design networking as separate fabrics

Network speed on a specification sheet is only one input. End-to-end performance depends on topology, adapter placement, switch configuration, congestion control, software versions, message sizes, and the ratio of compute to storage traffic.

Intra-node links

Accelerator-to-accelerator links inside a server determine how quickly a node can exchange gradients, activations, or tensor partitions. Ask the vendor to document the topology and the behavior when a link or accelerator is unavailable. Validate the communication pattern used by your framework instead of relying on a synthetic point-to-point number.

Inter-node compute fabric

NVIDIA’s H200 reference architecture describes a 400 Gbps-per-direction NDR InfiniBand compute fabric. Its B300 reference describes XDR InfiniBand with up to 800 Gbps per direction. These are vendor-specific specifications for different generations and designs, not interchangeable benchmarks or a promise of application throughput.

Storage, management, and out-of-band networks

Keep storage traffic from competing with distributed-training collectives where the workload justifies separate fabrics. Management and out-of-band networks should remain usable during a compute-fabric incident so administrators can inspect, reimage, and recover systems. The B300 design describes XDR for compute and NDR for storage, while also allowing high-speed Ethernet with RDMA for storage connectivity. That illustrates a design choice, not a mandatory topology.

Architecture example Compute-fabric detail How to interpret it
NVIDIA H200 reference NDR InfiniBand, 400 Gbps per direction Generation-specific vendor specification; validate application scaling and topology.
NVIDIA B300 reference XDR InfiniBand, up to 800 Gbps per direction Different generation and design; do not compare the number as a standalone benchmark.
B300 storage path NDR storage fabric or high-speed Ethernet/RDMA options Choose according to storage protocol, congestion behavior, and operational skills.

Network acceptance tests

  1. Verify link negotiation, firmware, MTU, routing, and fabric health on every adapter and switch port.
  2. Run the collective communication tests used by your framework at the planned node count.
  3. Measure behavior under simultaneous checkpoint writes and training traffic.
  4. Inject a failed link or switch path and confirm alerting, job handling, and recovery time.
  5. Record sustainable application throughput, not only a short peak result.

Size storage by access pattern

Capacity is necessary but insufficient. AI jobs may read the same shards repeatedly, create many small metadata operations, write large checkpoints, and serve concurrent users. Ask for sustained and concurrent read/write performance, IOPS, metadata behavior, parallelism, caching, data protection, protocol support, and growth limits.

Separate storage roles

  • High-performance shared storage: serves training data, checkpoints, and other parallel workloads close to the compute fabric.
  • User or home storage: holds notebooks, source code, personal files, and lower-throughput collaboration data.
  • Local scratch: provides temporary staging, shuffle, cache, or spill space and can be lost when a node is replaced.
  • Archive and backup: retains models, datasets, and audit records with a different cost and recovery objective.

NVIDIA’s guidance distinguishes high-performance storage from user storage and discusses throughput, parallel I/O, IOPS, metadata workloads, and RDMA-based access. A validated Ethernet-attached PowerScale configuration demonstrates one way to connect storage to a DGX deployment; it is not a universal minimum or a guarantee for another workload.

Calculate usable capacity

Start with live datasets, staging copies, checkpoints, retained model versions, logs, and a growth reserve. Convert raw drive capacity to usable capacity after erasure coding or replication, filesystem overhead, snapshots, and failure spares. Then check whether the system can deliver the required throughput while serving the planned number of clients. A large namespace with inadequate metadata performance can still stall a training job.

Storage questions for a quote

  • What throughput is sustained with the planned number of concurrent readers and writers?
  • What are the read, write, and metadata results for your file sizes and directory patterns?
  • How are failures, rebuilds, snapshots, replication, and ransomware recovery handled?
  • Which protocols and RDMA options are supported on the exact server and switch versions?
  • How does performance change as the system fills and as additional nodes are added?
  • What is the process for expanding capacity without interrupting jobs?

Plan software, scheduling, and observability

Operational software determines whether expensive accelerators remain productive. Establish a tested compatibility matrix for firmware, drivers, GPU libraries, operating systems, container runtimes, frameworks, and model-serving components.

Scheduling and tenancy

Define queues or policies for training, inference, development, and urgent jobs. Decide whether users receive whole nodes, individual accelerators, partitions, or time-sliced access. Include quotas, priorities, preemption rules, reservations, and chargeback or showback. Ensure the scheduler understands accelerator topology so a job does not receive devices connected through a slower path when a better placement is available.

Monitoring and recovery

Collect accelerator utilization, memory pressure, temperature, power, link errors, filesystem latency, metadata rates, job progress, and checkpoint age. Alerts should identify whether a slowdown originates in the model, accelerator, host, network, or storage. Test node reimaging, driver rollback, failed-checkpoint recovery, and replacement of a dead accelerator before production launch.

Make support ownership explicit

Support boundaries are often more important than a component’s headline specification. Write down who owns hardware, firmware, network switches, storage, cluster software, scheduler integration, monitoring, security updates, and application escalation.

NVIDIA’s H200 SuperPOD design describes full-system support covering compute, storage, network, and software. Its multi-node guidance includes scheduling, monitoring, and recovery in the operational stack. Use that as a prompt for contract language: define severity levels, response and restoration targets, remote-access procedures, spare-parts logistics, and the handoff between hardware and software teams.

Facilities and commissioning

For owned infrastructure, obtain site-specific requirements for rack dimensions, power distribution, cooling, floor loading, cabling, fire protection, and commissioning. Do not assume a generic electrical or cooling threshold; the exact server, rack density, ambient conditions, and redundancy design determine those values. The B300 reference architecture places responsibility for cluster infrastructure and building-system integration on the owner.

Compare procurement routes

Route Strengths Trade-offs to price and validate Best fit when
Integrated cluster Predefined compute, fabric, storage, software, and support integration. Less component freedom; architecture and support model may be tightly defined; site readiness is still required. You need a validated multi-node design and have staff to operate the resulting platform.
Qualified server systems More choice of server, storage, and network suppliers; components can align with existing standards. You assume more integration, compatibility testing, and cross-vendor escalation. You have infrastructure engineering expertise and want control over component selection.
Cloud GPU access Fast evaluation, elastic capacity, and no initial data-center buildout. Usage, data movement, storage, egress, support, and availability costs must be modeled; governance and placement need review. Demand is uncertain, bursty, geographically distributed, or time to capacity matters more than owning equipment.

AMD’s official ecosystem pages document separate cloud and evaluation paths for different audiences. Use those routes for a pilot or capacity bridge, but obtain region, quota, instance, software, and support details for the actual workload. The available architecture material does not establish an apples-to-apples price or ownership break-even between these routes.

A procurement process that reduces surprises

  1. Write the workload brief. Include models, datasets, concurrency, latency, training-time goals, retention, governance, and growth for at least the planning horizon.
  2. Set acceptance metrics. Define model throughput, scaling efficiency, checkpoint duration, inference latency, storage performance, failure recovery, and support response targets.
  3. Request complete topology diagrams. Require accelerator, host, compute-fabric, storage-fabric, management, and out-of-band paths with port counts and oversubscription.
  4. Run a representative pilot. Use your containers, data access pattern, framework versions, and scheduler policies at a realistic node count.
  5. Validate operations. Test provisioning, monitoring, upgrades, rollback, node replacement, failed links, storage rebuilds, and checkpoint recovery.
  6. Confirm site readiness. Approve power, cooling, racks, cabling, security, remote access, and delivery or installation responsibilities.
  7. Negotiate the support boundary. Put ownership, severity definitions, response times, spares, escalation, and software-version coverage in the contract.
  8. Score the lifecycle case. Compare integrated, qualified-system, and cloud proposals using the same utilization and workload-unit assumptions.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Buying the highest peak-FLOPS accelerator

Failure: the model does not fit, kernels are not optimized, or data delivery becomes the bottleneck.
Fix: test memory footprint, representative kernels, communication, and storage access with the intended software stack.

Specifying network speed without topology

Failure: oversubscription, poor adapter placement, or congestion erases the theoretical advantage.
Fix: require a full topology and measure collectives, checkpoint traffic, and failure behavior at production scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using one filesystem for every purpose

Failure: user activity, logs, and metadata storms interfere with training reads and checkpoint writes.
Fix: separate high-performance, user, scratch, and archive roles, then test concurrency and growth.

Leaving support ownership vague

Failure: a vendor blames another layer while a cluster remains idle.
Fix: define a lead support party, escalation path, access method, response target, and joint troubleshooting procedure.

Ignoring utilization

Failure: a large owned cluster spends much of its life idle, while a small team pays for peak capacity.
Fix: model hourly demand, queueing, burst periods, and the value of elastic or shared capacity.

Treating a reference architecture as a benchmark

Failure: a vendor design is read as proof of application performance or universal sizing.
Fix: preserve the stated generation and configuration, then require a workload-specific proof of concept.

Decision checklist

  • Workload types, model sizes, data volumes, concurrency, latency, and utilization are documented.
  • Accelerator memory, intra-node topology, server configuration, and software compatibility are validated.
  • Compute, storage, management, and out-of-band fabrics are separated or deliberately integrated with evidence.
  • Storage capacity is usable after protection overhead, and throughput and metadata behavior match the access pattern.
  • Scheduler, monitoring, firmware, driver, security, and recovery procedures have named owners.
  • Power, cooling, rack, cabling, commissioning, and physical security requirements are approved.
  • Support scope, response terms, spares, escalation, and version coverage are contractual.
  • Integrated, qualified-system, and cloud options are compared on workload cost and operational risk rather than component price alone.
  • Acceptance tests cover application throughput, scaling, checkpointing, failure recovery, and expansion.

FAQ

Do I need InfiniBand for AI training?

Not every training job requires it. Multi-node workloads with heavy collective communication should be evaluated on a high-performance fabric, while smaller or less synchronized jobs may work on high-speed Ethernet with suitable RDMA support. Decide from measured scaling, topology, congestion behavior, and operational capability rather than the fabric label alone.

How much storage does an AI cluster need?

There is no useful single number. Size live datasets, staging copies, checkpoints, retained versions, logs, backups, protection overhead, and growth; then verify sustained concurrent throughput and metadata performance for the intended file and directory patterns.

Is a larger GPU memory pool always better?

More memory can prevent model partitioning or offload, but it does not guarantee faster training or lower serving cost. Interconnect, software support, memory bandwidth, utilization, and the model’s actual access pattern determine the result.

Should a first deployment be owned hardware or cloud GPUs?

Use cloud access when demand is uncertain, bursty, or constrained by facility lead time; owned infrastructure can make sense for sustained utilization, data-residency needs, and predictable capacity. Compare complete workload cost, staffing, data movement, support, and availability instead of comparing an hourly rate with a server purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a vendor proof of concept include?

Run your representative model and data path with production-like containers, scheduler policies, node count, storage concurrency, and network traffic. Record throughput, scaling efficiency, latency, checkpoint time, utilization, failure recovery, and the software versions used.

Who should own an AI cluster after installation?

Assign named owners for hardware, firmware, network, storage, cluster software, scheduler, monitoring, security, and model enablement. A support agreement should identify the lead party and escalation process when a problem crosses those boundaries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix accelerator generations in one cluster?

Mixed generations may be possible, but scheduling, communication libraries, performance balance, and support become more complex. Require vendor qualification and test placement, collectives, checkpointing, and failure recovery before mixing nodes.

What is the most important acceptance metric for storage?

Use the metric that matches the job: sustained concurrent throughput for large training reads and checkpoints, plus metadata latency and IOPS for workloads with many files. A single sequential benchmark is not sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I compare two vendor quotes with different node counts?

Normalize them to the same completed workload, service level, utilization, support scope, facility cost, software coverage, and refresh period. Compare cost per useful training run or inference unit, not accelerator count.
