AI can make network detection faster and broader, but an AI score is not proof that an attack occurred. Treat model output as a lead. Confirm the incident with attributable, time-stamped telemetry; authorize containment through a tested procedure; and keep an accountable person, an audit trail, and a rollback path for high-impact actions.
What AI contributes to network detection and response
NIST’s preliminary Cybersecurity AI Profile identifies practical uses for flagging anomalies, correlating suspicious behavior, monitoring network traffic, and supporting real-time response. These functions can reduce the time an analyst spends searching across large event volumes and can expose relationships that are difficult to see in isolated alerts.

| AI function | Useful contribution | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Anomaly detection | Surfaces activity that differs from an established baseline. | That the deviation is malicious, rather than a legitimate change, outage, or measurement error. |
| Behavioral correlation | Links events across hosts, identities, applications, and time windows. | That every linked event came from the same attacker or represents a confirmed intrusion. |
| Alert prioritization | Ranks analyst work by estimated urgency or risk. | A complete accounting of affected assets or a defensible false-negative rate. |
| Traffic monitoring | Processes network events at a scale that is impractical for manual review. | Visibility into data sources that were never collected, retained, or were compromised. |
| Response assistance | Suggests investigative or containment actions and can help coordinate workflows. | Authority to take an irreversible action without policy, testing, and human accountability. |
There is no authoritative cross-industry statistic establishing a single accuracy, false-positive, false-negative, or return-on-investment figure for AI network detection. Performance depends on the environment, telemetry, model, thresholds, and threat activity, so vendor claims need local validation rather than a universal percentage.
Why a model result is not deterministic evidence
A model output can be incomplete, difficult to reproduce, or manipulated. NIST’s Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations, published March 24, 2025, catalogs attack goals, lifecycle stages, and mitigation concepts that apply when machine learning is used in security operations.

- Evasion: an adversary changes behavior or traffic so the analytic no longer recognizes it.
- Poisoning: training or reference data is contaminated, shifting what the system treats as normal.
- Compromised telemetry: an attacker alters, suppresses, delays, or fabricates the events on which the model depends.
- Distribution shift: a network, workload, or threat changes enough that historical patterns no longer describe current activity.
- Prompt or context manipulation: surrounding text or analyst context steers an AI system toward an unsafe interpretation or action.
These risks mean that a confidence score, generated explanation, or correlated story must be checked against source records. Re-running the same query should also produce an attributable result using the retained inputs and configuration.
Evidence that can support an incident conclusion
To make an AI-assisted finding defensible, preserve the records an independent analyst would need to reproduce it:
- Underlying network-flow or packet records.
- DNS and proxy logs showing the relevant resolutions and requests.
- Endpoint telemetry, including process, file, or connection observations available for the event.
- Identity events such as authentication, privilege, and account changes.
- Configuration state for the affected systems and security controls.
- Synchronized timestamps, time-zone information, and the retention period for each source.
- Analyst notes that explain what was examined, what was ruled out, and why the conclusion changed.
Alongside those records, retain the analytic rule or prompt, model and detector version, input window, threshold, and action taken. This context lets another investigator determine whether the same evidence would have produced the same result and identifies exactly what changed when a detection is tuned.

When can AI isolate a host or disable an account?
Use a simple operating rule: AI proposes; deterministic telemetry corroborates; a tested procedure authorizes; an accountable human owns high-impact action. The more disruptive or irreversible the action, the stronger the approval and recovery requirements.
| Action | Minimum control boundary | Required accountability |
|---|---|---|
| Enrich an alert or open an investigation record | Document the data used and preserve the generated result. | Analyst ownership and ordinary change logging. |
| Restrict a non-critical connection or apply a temporary, reversible control | Pre-approved policy, defined duration, monitoring for unintended impact, and an automatic or documented rollback. | Named operator and an auditable decision record. |
| Isolate a critical host | Corroborating telemetry, a tested playbook, explicit approval, and a rollback plan that preserves evidence. | Human approval before execution. |
| Disable an identity | Confirmed identity activity, a break-glass path for legitimate users, and a time-bounded restoration procedure. | Human approval and a recorded reason. |
| Block an essential service or alter evidence | Executive or incident-commander authorization, impact assessment, immutable audit records, and recovery verification. | Designated accountable incident lead. |
Do not let an autonomous system silently make a high-impact decision. If the action could interrupt a critical service, lock out legitimate users, destroy volatile evidence, or expand the blast radius, require approval before execution.
Use ATT&CK to turn model claims into testable questions
MITRE ATT&CK is a freely available knowledge base of adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures. It gives defenders a behavior-oriented vocabulary for describing what happened instead of relying on a product’s label for an alert. MITRE’s framework page says contributors span 226 different countries and territories, while CISA’s 2023 mapping guidance describes coverage of more than 100 threat-actor groups.

For each model-supported detection, map the claimed behavior to a technique and ask:
- Was the behavior actually observed in a source record, or only inferred by the model?
- Was the data source required for that technique present, complete, and retained?
- Did the analytic fire when the behavior was replayed or emulated in the relevant environment?
- Did the associated prevention or response control work as designed?
- What false positives and false negatives occurred for this technique, network segment, and asset class?
Record misses and unwanted alerts by technique and environment. This exposes coverage gaps that a single aggregate score can hide.

How to validate an AI-powered NDR or SIEM
- Define the behaviors to test. Select ATT&CK techniques that matter to your assets, identities, cloud services, and network paths. Include both common and high-impact behaviors.
- Inventory the required telemetry. Document which flow or packet, DNS, proxy, endpoint, identity, and configuration records each detection needs, including retention and clock requirements.
- Establish a reproducible baseline. Freeze the model or rule version, threshold, input window, feature configuration, and response policy used for the test.
- Replay or emulate activity. Run controlled exercises that produce the selected behaviors in a representative environment. Include normal administrative and business activity to measure unwanted alerts.
- Measure detection and prevention. For every technique, record whether the system detected it, how long it took, what evidence it presented, and whether the preventive or containment control succeeded.
- Test adversarial and operational change. Repeat after telemetry loss, altered timing, changed network baselines, detector updates, and other realistic distribution shifts. Check whether an analyst can distinguish a missing signal from a clean result.
- Approve, tune, and retest. Tune thresholds or workflows from the observed data, document every change, and rerun the exercise before expanding automated response or production scope.
This follows CISA’s recommended cycle of selecting ATT&CK techniques, aligning technologies, testing them, analyzing detection and prevention performance, and continually tuning the program from the results. Local production-scale exercises are more meaningful than an unqualified vendor benchmark.

What AI commonly misses
An AI detector can miss an attack when the necessary telemetry is absent or compromised, when behavior falls outside the data used to establish its baseline, or when an adversary deliberately evades the analytic. It can also over-alert on legitimate changes that resemble a learned pattern. Correlation may appear convincing while omitting the event that proves access, execution, persistence, or impact.
Best Value
The practical response is not to discard AI, but to make uncertainty visible: identify the missing source, label inferred relationships as hypotheses, and require corroboration before declaring scope or taking disruptive action.
Fit AI into the current incident-response lifecycle
NIST Special Publication 800-61 Revision 3, published in April 2025, is the current incident-response reference and supersedes Revision 2. It integrates incident response with the Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and treats preparation, detection, response, and recovery as a connected lifecycle. Its stated aim is to improve detection, response, and recovery activities while reducing the number and impact of incidents.
In that lifecycle, AI can shorten discovery and help prioritize work. Deterministic records establish what happened, tested procedures govern containment and recovery, and post-incident analysis feeds measured improvements back into detections and controls. Keep those responsibilities separate even when one platform presents them in a single console.

Before accepting an AI-generated incident, an organization should be able to answer four questions without relying on the model’s narrative:
- Which observed records demonstrate the behavior?
- Which ATT&CK technique or techniques describe it?
- Which tested procedure authorizes the proposed response?
- Who approved the action, what was changed, and how can it be rolled back?
If any answer is missing, the alert remains an investigative lead rather than proof. That distinction allows AI to deliver speed and scale without turning an opaque, fragile output into an unreviewable security decision.
