AI in Education: Real-World Uses and What the Evidence Shows

Schools are using AI to help teachers plan lessons, adapt materials, draft communications and support student revision. But the available official sources do not verify a list of 21 separately named deployments: the two documented counts of 21 refer to interviews in England and school visits in Wales. The examples below show what those sources actually report, alongside a vendor-reported national rollout and a separate research-grant program.

What do the documented school examples show?

The strongest school-level evidence here comes from two inspectorate reports. Both describe reported practices and observations, not controlled trials proving that AI caused better learning outcomes.

Setting and source Reported AI uses What the evidence represents
England; Ofsted release, 27 June 2025 Lesson planning, creating resources, drafting parent communications and administration. Ofsted summarized interviews with 21 leaders from schools, further education colleges and multi-academy trusts. Participants had embedded and used AI for at least 12 months. This is an early-adopter interview study, not a representative estimate of adoption across England. Ofsted’s report summary.
Wales; Estyn report dated 9 October 2025, based on visits in spring 2024 Teachers used AI for planning, resources, differentiation and report writing. Special schools and pupil referral units used it to create communication stories and tailored literacy pathways. Pupils used it in collaborative creative projects and for independent revision. Staff also used it to draft letters and policies. Inspectors visited 21 primary, secondary, special and all-age schools. The report presents visited-school examples and reported practices, not a national effectiveness trial. Estyn’s thematic report.

Across these examples, AI supports different kinds of work: preparing instruction, adapting or creating materials, handling routine writing, and giving learners another way to practise or create. The tool does not take responsibility for the finished lesson, communication, assessment or feedback; educators remain responsible for checking what it produces.

What does a national-scale deployment look like?

OpenAI said on 21 January 2026 that ChatGPT Edu had been deployed across Estonia’s public universities and secondary schools, reaching more than 30,000 students, educators and researchers in its first year. That reach is a company-reported deployment figure, not an independently measured learning result. OpenAI’s announcement also describes a partnership with the University of Tartu and Stanford to study outcomes over time among 20,000 students. That is the announced scale of a research cohort, not a finding about its outcomes. The initiative is described as combining AI tools with learning-outcomes research, certifications and training.

Which AI education projects are not classroom deployments?

Digital Promise’s 21 September 2026 announcement describes the K-12 AI Infrastructure Program as a $26 million, multi-year initiative. It named eight grantee organizations for projects lasting six to twelve months, focused on areas including formative assessment, shared datasets and openly licensed outputs. These grants concern the development of research infrastructure and tools; they should not be counted as eight operational classroom deployments or as evidence that funded tools have improved learning. Digital Promise’s announcement.

Does AI improve student learning?

The sources cited here do not establish a general causal learning benefit. Ofsted says reliable evidence on educational outcomes remains limited, with most research “explorative, short-term and in limited domains.” Reports that staff use AI, that a school or country has adopted it, or that educators perceive workload benefits are not the same as independently measured improvements in student learning. Estonia’s announced longitudinal study is intended to investigate outcomes; its announced participant count is not itself an outcome.

What should schools check before using AI?

Ofsted’s interview study describes leaders’ attention to bias, data protection, intellectual property and safeguarding. It also reports that nearly all providers visited had an AI champion, commonly a teacher with technology expertise who supported colleagues. Estyn likewise identifies risks around data protection, bias, staff training gaps and unequal access to paid tools. Its report notes that teachers scrutinize AI-assisted assessment and feedback rather than accepting generated judgments uncritically.

  • Protect people and information: Set rules for handling personal or sensitive data, and check safeguarding implications before using AI with learners.
  • Review outputs: Check generated teaching materials, communications, assessments and feedback for errors, bias and inappropriate content.
  • Clarify ownership: Consider intellectual-property questions when staff use AI to create or adapt materials.
  • Train and support staff: Make sure colleagues understand the tools and have a route to ask for help; the reports describe AI champions and training needs as part of implementation.
  • Consider access: Check whether students can participate equitably, particularly when a workflow depends on paid tools.

These are implementation concerns reported by the inspectorates, not a single prescribed policy or assurance that any one set of controls is sufficient.

Why are there not 21 named deployments here?

The sources containing the number 21 describe different samples: Ofsted interviewed 21 education leaders, while Estyn visited 21 schools. Neither source provides a catalogue of 21 individually named deployments. Treating either sample as a verified list would misstate what the reports document. The evidence supports a grounded account of use patterns and selected institutional examples, but not the exact count promised by “21 real deployments.”
