AI in Automotive: 16 Real-World Applications, from Factory Floors to Driver Assistance

AI is already being used in automotive factories, driver-assistance systems and software workflows—but the examples are at very different stages. Some are described by their makers as series-production or customer-used systems; others are pilots, tests, prototypes or plans. Here are 16 documented applications, with those distinctions made explicit.

How to read the stages: “In production” or “customer use” means the company describes the system as operating in a production plant or customer vehicles. “Pilot,” “test” and “prototype” indicate evaluation or development, not broad availability. A “planned” launch is an announced intention, not evidence that it has happened. The cases below are a representative set, not a canonical industry list of 16. Company and vendor accounts are attributed because the reported outcomes are not independently validated here.

How is AI used in automotive factories?

1. Audi EC4P: cloud-based production systems

Audi says its EC4P platform is used in large-scale series production for body-shop work on the A5 and A6 at its Neckarsulm plant. This is an example of AI-related digital infrastructure supporting ongoing production, rather than an AI feature in a customer vehicle. Audi does not provide a quantified performance result in the cited account.

2. Audi ProcessGuardAIn: monitoring and anomaly detection

Audi describes ProcessGuardAIn as a real-time process-monitoring system intended to detect anomalies early. Two paint-shop applications were in pilot, with series introduction planned for the second quarter of 2026. That timing is an announced plan; the available account does not establish that the planned introduction was completed.

6. Volkswagen image analysis: checking vehicle configuration

Volkswagen describes real-time image analysis at its Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt plants to check whether components match a vehicle’s configuration. This applies visual AI to production quality and configuration checks. The company account does not state an accuracy rate or quantify how many mismatches the system catches.

7. Volkswagen Digital Production Platform: groundwork for predictive maintenance

Volkswagen says its Digital Production Platform lays the groundwork for data-based capabilities including predictive maintenance and remote quality monitoring. That wording matters: it does not establish that every listed capability is fully deployed at every site, so these should be understood as platform-enabled manufacturing capabilities rather than universal rollouts.

8. BMW Figure 02: humanoid robot supporting production

BMW describes a Figure 02 pilot at its Spartanburg plant in 2025, where the robot performed precise, repetitive production work supporting X3 manufacturing. In a 2026 source page describing that pilot, BMW said the robot had supported production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles within ten months. This is BMW’s reported result, not an independently measured productivity claim. BMW also described a further 2026 evaluation of Figure 03 use cases.

9. BMW and Hexagon AEON: a test deployment for factory work

BMW says the AEON humanoid robot had a test deployment at Leipzig in December 2025. Planned testing and pilot work would examine possible uses in battery assembly and component manufacturing. Those activities are described as evaluation, not established series-production use.

10. BMW digital twins and AI quality controls: planning and inspection

BMW characterizes digital twins and AI-based quality controls as existing elements of its production system. Digital representations can support factory planning, while AI quality controls can assist inspection; the cited account provides limited performance detail and does not quantify either system’s impact.

11. BMW autonomous intralogistics: moving materials inside plants

BMW identifies autonomous transport solutions as part of its production system. These systems address factory material movement, not public-road driving. The cited company account does not name a vendor or quantify the effect on delivery times or labor.

On April 28, 2026, General Motors reported that Super Cruise had accumulated 1 billion hands-free miles across nearly 750,000 enabled vehicles spanning 23 North American models. GM describes it as a driver-assistance system, not autonomous driving: drivers must remain attentive, and access operates under GM’s plan or trial terms. GM said eyes-off capability was planned for 2028; that is a future plan, not a current Super Cruise capability.

14. BMW and Momenta: a China-focused driver-assistance system

In a 2025 report, BMW said road tests and virtual simulations across four Chinese innovation sites supported a localized driver-assistance system expected in the China-specific iX3 in 2026. The cited report documents development and an expected launch, not confirmation that the launch occurred or that the system is available in other markets.

15. Nissan and Wayve ProPILOT: embodied-AI prototype with a future rollout planned

Nissan reported a ProPILOT prototype integrating Wayve technology in September 2025. The companies described a first mass-produced model for Japan as planned for fiscal year 2027. The prototype and rollout plan should not be mistaken for a system already available to customers.

Where does AI support automotive software development?

16. Woven by Toyota: AI suggestions for code remediation

Microsoft’s 2025 customer story says a multi-agent system at Woven by Toyota suggested fixes for around 80 percent of coding errors in a workflow assisting MISRA-related code remediation. This is a Microsoft-reported result for that workflow, not independent validation or a claim that AI automatically approves or fixes all automotive software.

What these examples do—and do not—show

Together, the cases span factory monitoring, quality checks, maintenance groundwork, robotics, material movement, driver assistance and code remediation. Their maturity is uneven: a company describing a system as operating in production is not the same as a pilot, and neither a prototype nor a launch announcement proves customer availability. In particular, the driving examples here should not be collapsed into a claim that cars are driving themselves: GM calls Super Cruise driver assistance, and the Volkswagen/Bosch-CARIAD driving stack has been described as Level 2 assistance in a test fleet, with the ID.EVERY1 production example planned for 2027.
