Mercedes-Benz’s public announcements show AI being applied to factory quality processes, employee workflows and autonomous-driving development. They establish deployment and adoption more clearly than financial impact: the cited materials do not quantify savings, defect reductions or profit caused specifically by AI. The evidence is a company case study, not a comparison of automakers.
Where Mercedes-Benz is applying AI
The company’s examples span three different kinds of work: supporting production decisions, helping employees handle routine information tasks, and developing automated driving systems. Those applications are at different stages, so an announcement of a rollout or a planned test should not be read as proof of a measured business result.

What the factory examples do—and do not—show
MO360: AI-supported quality decisions
Mercedes-Benz described MO360 in its August 6, 2020 announcement as a production ecosystem connecting applications across more than 30 passenger-car plants. Within QUALITY LIVE, workers could access live vehicle-quality status, and AI methods could suggest efficient rework when needed. This is evidence of a quality-support capability and its intended role in production, not a published measurement of how many defects or rework events AI prevented.
The same 2020 announcement set a target of increasing production efficiency by more than 15% by 2022 through improved processes, better data availability and faster decisions. It is a historical target, not a confirmed result in the cited material, and it was not presented as an AI-only target. Predictive maintenance was also framed as future potential: the company discussed connecting plant maintenance data to MO360, including a motor-replacement example, rather than reporting a measured deployment outcome.

Electric axial-flux motor: AI is one element of a wider process
In a June 9, 2026 announcement, Mercedes-Benz said large-scale production of its electric axial-flux motor had begun in Berlin-Marienfelde. The company described a manufacturing process combining AI-based quality control with automation, laser technology, intelligent controls and skilled employees. It reported 98 process steps, of which 65 were new to Mercedes-Benz and 35 new worldwide. Those figures describe the complexity and novelty of the process; they do not isolate AI’s contribution to production speed, quality or cost.

Workflow automation with n8n
Mercedes-Benz announced a global rollout of n8n on May 12, 2026, aiming to move AI-powered workflows beyond pilots and into operational processes across research and development, production, sales, financial services, HR and IT. More than 1,500 employees took part in a company-wide AI and automation hackathon, with selected ideas to be developed further. Participation and planned follow-on work demonstrate organizational activity, not realized savings or scaled impact.

Microsoft 365 Copilot for routine information work
In a March 3, 2026 announcement, Mercedes-Benz described a global rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot for administrative and production-related work. Its examples included supporting routine tasks, creating reports, summarizing information and preparing decision documents. The company reported that around 50% of employees used AI weekly and that usage had more than doubled over the prior year. These are company-reported adoption figures, not a productivity measurement or an externally audited result.

Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 robotaxi announcement described work toward Level 4 projects and a partner ecosystem involving the S-Class, MB.OS, NVIDIA and Uber. NVIDIA was to provide DRIVE Hyperion architecture and DRIVE AV L4 software, supported by AI models, simulation tools and datasets. The company said S-Class robotaxi test vehicles were planned for Abu Dhabi later in 2026. That statement records a plan; by itself, it does not establish that the planned tests occurred or that a commercial robotaxi service is operating.

The same announcement also described a separate project involving Momenta and mobility provider Lumo. Keeping the projects distinct matters: partner names and technology plans indicate how a program is being assembled, but they do not substitute for evidence of service availability, vehicle performance, customer use or revenue.

Mercedes-Benz reported 2025 group revenue of €132.2 billion and adjusted EBIT of €8.2 billion in its February 12, 2026 results announcement. It also reported more than €3.5 billion in positive EBIT contribution from its broader Next Level Performance cost-efficiency program, which included material savings and efficiencies in production and selling, general and administrative expenses.

These are company-wide financial results and a broad cost-program figure. The announcement does not isolate AI’s contribution to either. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the revenue, adjusted EBIT or program contribution as AI-generated returns, or to infer an AI return on investment from them.

For any claimed benefit, separate evidence that a system is used from evidence that it changed a business outcome. A useful assessment asks:
- What stage is documented? Distinguish production use from a global rollout, a pilot, a development program or a future plan.
- What exactly was measured? Adoption, employee participation, process steps and company-wide financial results answer different questions.
- Who reported it, and when? Company announcements are useful evidence of the company’s stated deployment and figures, but are not independent evaluations.
- Is the result tied causally to AI? A financial or efficiency figure covering several initiatives cannot be assigned to AI without a direct measure that isolates its contribution.
- What is the scope? Check the function, geography, period and population covered before generalizing a metric to an entire company or industry.
Applied to the Mercedes-Benz examples, the strongest supported conclusions concern implementation, reach and adoption: AI-supported factory quality processes, employee-facing tools, a reported workplace-use snapshot and an announced autonomous-driving development program. The cited public materials do not establish what share, if any, of Mercedes-Benz’s financial performance was caused by AI.
