Use AI image generation when you need new visual content. Use image upscaling when you already have an image and need a larger output. The difficult choice is what happens when the source is tiny, blurry or damaged: a preservation-oriented upscaler tries to retain the image’s existing structure, while a generative model may invent texture or rebuild missing forms. Choose according to your starting image, target dimensions and tolerance for newly synthesized detail.

Start by asking whether the scene, subject and composition already exist in an image you own.

- No usable source image: choose an AI image generator. Your task is creation, so describe the subject, composition, style and format you want.
- A usable source image that is too small: choose an upscaler. Its job is enlargement, not replacement of the original scene.
- A very small, damaged or heavily compressed source: decide whether strict resemblance or plausible new detail matters more. A preservation-oriented model is safer for identity and design fidelity; a generative model can make a more convincing large picture but may change fine features.
- You need both a new composition and a large final file: generate the image first, inspect it, then upscale the approved result.
There is no universal “best” tool. The right choice depends on the source image, the output dimensions and how much invented detail you will accept.
What AI image generation does
AI image generation creates visual content from a description or other creative direction. You begin with an idea rather than a finished image that must be enlarged. The model produces a new composition: for example, a product scene that does not yet exist, a fantasy landscape, or an illustration in a specified visual style.

When generation is the right starting point
- You have only a written concept, sketch or mood board.
- The required subject, setting or camera angle is absent from your existing files.
- You need several original concepts before deciding on a final image.
- You want to change the composition rather than preserve a particular photograph.
Generation gives you creative control over what appears in the frame, but it does not recover a pre-existing original. Every small feature is part of a newly synthesized result, so the output should be treated as a new image even when a reference image guides it.
What to specify
Describe the subject, action, setting, viewpoint, lighting, aspect ratio and intended use. If a particular object must remain recognizable, state that requirement and inspect the result closely; a generated image can satisfy the general prompt while changing exact logos, text, facial features or product geometry. Generate at the composition and aspect ratio you actually need when possible, rather than expecting enlargement to fix a fundamentally unsuitable layout.
What image upscaling does
Upscaling starts with an uploaded or already generated image and increases its pixel dimensions. Adobe documents upscale as an operation on uploaded or generated images. The process estimates what additional pixels should look like so the file can be displayed, printed or edited at a larger size.

A preservation-oriented model aims to keep the input’s structure, colors and recognizable details while reducing the visual damage caused by enlargement. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation identifies Topaz Gigapixel as an example focused on preserving existing detail. Topaz describes its core Gigapixel models as non-generative and oriented toward preserving input structure and natural detail.
“Preserving” does not mean that every unseen pixel is recovered exactly. The source did not contain enough information to reveal every original pore, brushstroke or edge. The model is making an informed estimate, so compare the enlarged file with the source at 100% and at the final viewing size.
Generative upscaling
A generative upscale model is useful when the source is so small, blurred or damaged that straightforward enlargement would leave obvious gaps. Adobe describes Topaz Bloom as adding creative detail. Topaz describes its Redefine model as adding detail and rebuilding structure where original information is missing or degraded.

That rebuilding is a generative reconstruction, not proof that the output recovers the exact unseen original. It can produce a sharper-looking face, fabric pattern or architectural edge while quietly changing what was actually in the source. Use it when plausible texture is valuable and a small deviation is acceptable; avoid it when evidence, identity or faithful reproduction is the priority.

A practical selection framework
Use the following questions in order. They prevent a tool’s marketing label from deciding a job that should be determined by your source and deliverable.
1. Do you have an image containing the required content?
If the answer is no, generate. If the answer is yes, continue to the next question. A larger canvas cannot create the missing scene, person or composition you need; it only enlarges what is already present.
2. Is the source sufficiently clear to preserve?
Look at faces, text, thin lines, repeated patterns and object boundaries. If these are recognizable and the main problem is file size, start with a preservation-oriented upscaler. If they are unreadable or severely damaged, test a generative model only if reconstructed detail is acceptable.
3. What is the output requirement?
Record the final pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, file format and viewing distance before choosing a model. A web thumbnail, a slide background and a large print do not need the same enlargement. Avoid scaling far beyond the dimensions your delivery channel can display; extra pixels do not automatically create extra truth.
4. How much invention can the project tolerate?

Documented scale options and limits
Vendor specifications describe available controls, not a shared quality score. Adobe’s Photoshop Generative Upscale documentation, last updated May 20, 2026, says users can select 2× or 4× and choose among models with different enhancement behavior. Topaz Labs’ Gigapixel Upscale documentation, accessed October 13, 2026, describes enlargement up to 6× and a 32,000-pixel maximum on the longest side.

These figures come from the vendors’ own documentation. They are not independent head-to-head measurements, and they do not establish which tool produces the best result for a particular image. Judge the actual output for your file.
Step-by-step workflow for a new image
- Define the deliverable. Write down the intended aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, orientation and use, such as a web banner, presentation slide or print file.
- Decide whether a source exists. If no existing image contains the required scene, open an image-generation workflow rather than an upscale control.
- Describe the composition. Specify subject placement, viewpoint, lighting, background, style and any elements that must remain absent. Include the target aspect ratio.
- Generate several candidates. Compare composition and identity before worrying about final resolution. A high-resolution version of the wrong composition is still the wrong image.
- Inspect critical details. Check faces, hands, text, logos, repeated objects and straight edges at 100% magnification. Reject a candidate that fails a non-negotiable requirement.
- Choose the final candidate. Keep the original generated file as a reference before any enlargement or further editing.
- Upscale only if necessary. Apply a suitable enlargement model after the composition is approved, then compare the result with the original generated image.
Step-by-step workflow for an existing image
- Preserve the original. Work on a copy and keep the untouched source, including its original pixel dimensions and metadata when they matter.
- Measure the gap. Compare the source dimensions with the required output. Calculate the approximate scale factor instead of selecting the largest available multiplier by default.
- Inspect the source. Identify whether softness comes from low resolution, motion blur, compression, focus, dust or physical damage. Upscaling can estimate missing pixels, but it cannot reliably undo every cause of blur.
- Select preservation or reconstruction. Use a preservation-oriented model for evidence, identity, artwork fidelity or product accuracy. Consider a generative model only when plausible rebuilt texture is more useful than strict matching.
- Run a conservative first pass. Start with the smallest scale that meets the delivery requirement. Save each version with its scale and model recorded.
- Compare at two sizes. At 100%, look for halos, repeated textures, melted edges and invented facial or lettering details. At the final display or print size, check whether the result actually solves the reader’s problem.
- Validate the output. Confirm pixel dimensions, color appearance, file format, orientation and that no important edge or subject was cropped.
Why a larger image can look less faithful
Low-resolution files omit information. When an algorithm enlarges them, it must infer the appearance of the missing pixels from nearby patterns and the model’s learned assumptions. A smooth sky is relatively easy to extend; tiny type, jewelry, hair strands and architectural ornament are ambiguous.
Preservation-oriented models generally make restrained estimates. They may leave a soft area soft rather than fabricate a crisp pattern. Generative models can create a more visually convincing surface by rebuilding structure, but the new surface may be unlike the original. This is why “sharper” and “more accurate” are separate judgments.

- Faces and people: check eye shape, teeth, skin marks, hairlines and jewelry against the source.
- Text and logos: compare every character; an apparently sharp word can still be incorrect.
- Products and technical parts: verify ports, seams, buttons, labels and repeated components.
- Artwork: inspect brush edges, paper grain and intentional imperfections that a model may smooth or reinterpret.
- Evidence images: treat any newly visible feature as unverified unless it is supported by the source or another record.
Choosing by real-world scenario
You need a hero illustration for an article
Generate the scene if no existing photo or artwork meets the brief. Set the aspect ratio to match the page, reserve clear space for any text that will be added later, and inspect the final composition before enlarging it.
You have a small family photograph
Begin with a preservation-oriented upscale. Faces and personal identity make invented detail especially risky. Keep the original beside the enlarged version and avoid treating a newly reconstructed feature as historical evidence.
You need a large print from a low-resolution download
Measure the required print dimensions and viewing distance. Try a restrained enlargement first. If the source remains visibly damaged and the print is decorative rather than documentary, a generative pass may improve perceived texture; inspect faces, text and distinctive objects before approving it.

You are restoring a scanned document or artwork
Prioritize fidelity. Preserve the scan, use a model intended to retain existing structure, and compare lettering and fine lines at full size. If the purpose is archival or evidentiary, do not substitute a creatively reconstructed version for the original scan.
You need a product image in several formats
Generate only if the product view itself does not exist and a synthetic image is acceptable. If you have an approved product photograph, upscale that file and verify geometry, labels, colors and edges in every required size.

The tools are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. Adobe describes uploading an image to Firefly Upscale and suggests pairing upscale with Generative Expand or other image manipulation when those edits are needed. In practice, keep the operations conceptually separate:
- Create or select the composition. Decide what the image should show before changing its dimensions.
- Expand only when the frame must change. If more canvas is needed around the subject, use an expansion or editing operation rather than expecting an upscaler to invent a new layout.
- Upscale after structural edits. Enlarging the approved composition last avoids repeatedly resampling intermediate files.
- Document synthetic areas. Mark which regions were generated or reconstructed when provenance matters.
Adobe’s Firefly Upscale Image API guide describes its service this way: “The Firefly Upscale Image API increases the resolution of photos and artwork while preserving original detail, structure, and color fidelity.” That is a vendor description of intended behavior, not an independent test result, so inspect your output rather than assuming every source will receive identical treatment.
Quality-control checklist
Before delivery, verify the points that are easy to miss when an image looks impressive at a glance.

- Does the image contain the correct subject and composition?
- Are the final dimensions and aspect ratio correct for the destination?
- Did any face, hand, product part or architectural edge change during generation or upscale?
- Is every visible word still spelled correctly?
- Are textures natural, or do they show repeating patterns, halos or plastic-looking surfaces?
- Do colors and contrast remain consistent with the source or approved reference?
- Was the image enlarged only as much as needed?
- Have you retained the original and recorded which model and scale produced the delivered file?
- If the image is documentary, archival or legally sensitive, can every important visible detail be supported by the source?
Common mistakes and how to recover
Using generation when the source must be preserved
Symptom: the result is attractive but people, objects or lettering no longer match the source. Recovery: return to the original file and use a preservation-oriented upscale. Treat the generated version as a separate creative interpretation.
Using an upscaler to solve a composition problem
Symptom: the image is larger, but the subject is still cropped, misplaced or surrounded by the wrong background. Recovery: fix framing with an appropriate crop, expansion or editing operation, then upscale the approved frame.
Assuming the largest multiplier is best
Symptom: edges become brittle, textures repeat or invented detail dominates. Recovery: return to the smallest scale that satisfies the output requirement and compare versions at final viewing size.
Trusting a sharp-looking reconstruction
Symptom: a tiny source appears remarkably detailed, but a face, label or technical feature is subtly wrong. Recovery: compare against the source at 100%, use a preservation-oriented model, and label generative reconstructions when others could mistake them for recovered facts.
What the documented numbers do—and do not—tell you
A 2×, 4× or 6× control tells you the available scale factor. A 32,000-pixel longest-side limit tells you the documented maximum dimension for one product. Neither number predicts quality for your particular source, and none is an independent benchmark comparing Adobe and Topaz.
Model names also describe different goals. Adobe’s documentation distinguishes Firefly Upscaler for restoring low-resolution images, Topaz Gigapixel for preserving existing detail and Topaz Bloom for adding creative detail. Those descriptions help you choose a behavior, but they do not replace a visual check of the resulting file.
Final decision
Choose generation when the visual content does not exist yet. Choose a preservation-oriented upscaler when an existing image is fundamentally right and only needs more pixels. Choose generative upscaling when the source is too degraded for faithful enlargement and plausible reconstructed detail is worth the risk of change. If you need both new content and a large output, generate first, approve the composition, then upscale once. The decisive question is not which tool has the most impressive maximum scale; it is whether your priority is creating, preserving or deliberately rebuilding visual information.

Usually not when exact fidelity is required. A generative model can rebuild missing texture or structure, so newly visible details may not have existed in the source. Keep the original scan and use a preservation-oriented workflow for the faithful version.
Does a higher scale factor guarantee a better result?
No. Vendor-listed factors such as Adobe’s 2× and 4× options or Gigapixel’s up-to-6× capability describe available enlargement, not a quality ranking. The smallest scale that meets your output requirement is often the safest starting point.
