Investigations by Maldita.es found AI-generated healers and doctor-like characters on Instagram and Facebook making unsupported claims about serious illnesses and directing viewers toward supplements, books, and health guides. The findings document a troubling pattern—but their samples do not establish how common these videos are across all Meta Reels.
What the investigations found
Instagram: synthetic healers with verified badges
In a report published July 27, 2026, and updated July 29, Maldita.es examined 25 Instagram profiles with Meta Verified badges. The outlet said those accounts had more than five million subscribers and over 389 million video views combined. Those figures describe the selected profiles, not Instagram as a whole. Maldita.es’ Instagram investigation describes accounts presenting AI-generated people as health advisers while promoting supplements and ebooks about holistic cures.

One example was “Baba Matryona,” a synthetic Siberian healer persona. In a Reel, she invited viewers to comment “blood pressure” and promised to show a “science-backed way” to reverse the condition. That is the pitch of a fictional AI persona, not medical advice or evidence of a cure. The profile linked to an Amazon storefront selling a hydration and wellness powder. Its product page said the powder was not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Maldita.es reported that Amazon told the outlet it had opened an investigation.

A separate Maldita.es investigation, published September 7, 2026, examined 232 Facebook profiles and pages. The outlet reported more than 81.5 million combined followers and said 36.2% of the profiles and pages published videos featuring AI-generated characters posing as doctors. The data were gathered August 24–28, 2026; the counts apply to this investigated sample. The Facebook investigation also describes unsupported claims about supposed cures for cancer, dementia, and diabetes, including claims that fruit could “starve” cancer.

Some accounts in the Facebook sample directed viewers to sites selling supplements, books, or health guides. Maldita.es said some sites asked for phone numbers and disclosed paid SMS charges in small print. This is a reported pattern in the sample, not proof that every account used the same sales tactics.
How the videos can turn attention into sales
The investigations document several routes from a dramatic health claim to a commercial offer: Amazon storefronts, links tagged with Amazon Associates, and external sites selling supplements, ebooks, books, or guides. A product link does not establish that a promoted item works, and the reporting does not show that every account is monetized or that affiliate income is each operator’s only motive.

The example of Baba Matryona illustrates why the distinction matters: a Reel’s confident cure language led to a product storefront, while the product’s own disclaimer disclaimed disease-treatment uses. Treat claims about serious conditions as unverified unless they are supported by reliable medical evidence; a persuasive persona and a shopping link do not supply that evidence.

What a blue check or AI label does—and does not—tell you
A Meta Verified badge is not a medical credential and does not validate a health claim. The Instagram investigation’s reported verified profiles included synthetic health-advice personas, demonstrating that a verification mark should not be read as proof that a real clinician is speaking or that the advice is sound.

Meta’s stated AI-label approach is different from medical review. In a policy post by Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, the company said it may apply AI information labels when it detects industry-standard AI indicators or when a user discloses that content was AI-generated. Meta said it would keep such content on its platforms with labeling and context unless it violated another policy. Bickert wrote: “We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address this content.” Meta’s explanation of its AI-labeling approach describes the company’s stated policy; it is not an independent audit of whether labels appeared consistently on the accounts Maldita.es examined.
An AI label, when present, can help identify how media was made. It does not assess whether a medical claim is true. Likewise, the absence of a visible label is not proof that a video is authentic: Maldita.es reported examining visible signs such as impossible figures, blurred backgrounds, unintelligible text, and watermarks in its Facebook investigation.

What the numbers can—and cannot—show
The figures are substantial within the groups Maldita.es selected, but neither investigation provides a representative estimate of how much AI health content appears across Meta Reels. The Facebook report explicitly says its sample does not represent every such profile. The Instagram report covers 25 accounts. So “filling up” describes a visible, investigated phenomenon, not a measured platform-wide share or trend.
Meta separately reported that views and time spent watching original Facebook Reels approximately doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. It also said it removed more than 20 million accounts impersonating large creators during 2025. Those company figures concern original-Reel engagement and creator impersonation; they do not measure AI health misinformation or show how often these healer videos were recommended. Meta’s post about Facebook Reels sets out those figures.

How to assess a miraculous-cure Reel
- Check who is speaking. A doctor-like appearance, confident narration, or verified badge does not establish that the person is a qualified clinician. Look for independently verifiable credentials and a real institution, not just a bio or polished profile.
- Be especially cautious with serious conditions. Claims that a food, supplement, or “natural” method cures cancer, diabetes, dementia, or high blood pressure need strong medical evidence. A comment prompt, testimonial, or promise to reveal a secret is not evidence.
- Follow the money. Check whether the video sends viewers to a storefront, affiliate link, ebook, guide, or external signup. A commercial link does not automatically prove deception, but it is a reason to separate the sales pitch from the health claim.
- Do not change treatment based on a Reel. For a diagnosis or treatment decision, consult a licensed health professional. Do not stop prescribed medication or delay care because a video promises a cure.
- Report misleading content through the platform. Use the Reel or post’s reporting controls when a video appears to promote dangerous medical misinformation or impersonate a professional. A report is not a substitute for medical advice, but it gives the platform a way to review the content.
