Some video doorbells can speak to visitors when you cannot answer—but “auto-message” may mean a prerecorded line you choose, not an AI conversation. Ring’s Alexa+ Greetings is described as a more conversational option that can respond to visitors and delivery instructions, but it works only with listed devices and service requirements. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to check before relying on one.
What does an AI greeting or auto-message do?
A doorbell response can be as simple as a prerecorded message played after you select it in an app. A more conversational feature may ask a visitor a question, respond to their answer, or relay an instruction. The word “automatic” alone does not tell you which kind of interaction a doorbell offers—or whether it starts without the homeowner taking an action.

Ring describes Alexa+ Greetings as engaging visitors who press the doorbell and, for delivery personnel, interacting proactively. Its examples include asking general visitors for more information, telling a courier where to leave a package, answering follow-up questions, and recording a visitor message for later review. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every exchange will be understood or handled correctly. Amazon’s announcement and Ring’s support page provide the current feature details.
How Ring says Alexa+ Greetings works
Ring says Alexa+ Greetings combines Alexa+ conversational capability with Ring Video Descriptions. Amazon describes Video Descriptions as concise text descriptions of motion activity seen by Ring doorbells and cameras. Ring says Greetings uses those descriptions, asks visitors who they are, and responds according to instructions set by the account holder. This describes the system as Ring presents it; it does not independently establish how accurately the system identifies a situation or follows an instruction. Ring’s Alexa+ Greetings documentation and Amazon’s Video Descriptions announcement explain the two features.

Can a video doorbell answer the door for me?
It can deliver a message or interact with a visitor, but “answer the door” does not necessarily mean a person is monitoring the exchange or that the doorbell can resolve every request. With a preset response, you choose the line that plays. With Alexa+ Greetings, Ring describes a conversational interaction shaped by the homeowner’s instructions. Ring also says conversations can be reviewed through event history and compatible screens, subject to subscription compatibility. Check the device’s current app and support information to confirm which review options apply to your account. Ring support
Can a doorbell tell delivery drivers where to leave a package?
Ring lists package-placement instructions as an example for Alexa+ Greetings: a homeowner can provide directions and the feature can pass them along to a delivery visitor, including handling follow-up questions as described by Ring. This is distinct from a preset response, which can only play its chosen wording. If package placement matters, set clear instructions and check what the feature says it can do for your particular model and location; the documentation does not establish a success rate for deliveries.

How preset replies differ from conversational AI
Compare the actual interaction rather than relying on labels such as “smart” or “AI.” Google describes Nest Quick Responses as prerecorded speech that a user selects after a doorbell press. Its help page says: “Quick Responses are pre-recorded messages that Google Nest doorbells can speak to a visitor if you’re not able to come to the door.” Google says users cannot record or customize these messages. Ring’s older Quick Replies also use a homeowner-selected preset message. Its older Alexa Greetings feature could ask how it could help and offer to take a message or give package instructions. Ring’s newer Alexa+ Greetings is described as more conversational and instruction-aware. These are differences in documented behavior, not evidence that one brand is more accurate or preferable for every household. Ring’s 2021 announcement, updated in 2022

What to check before choosing a doorbell response feature
- Interaction type: Is the feature a selected prerecorded line or a conversation that can respond to a visitor?
- How it starts: Must you select a reply after a doorbell press, or does the feature engage a visitor under specified conditions?
- Exact device: Confirm the full model name and generation against the vendor’s current compatibility list.
- Account and plan: Check linked-account, subscription, trial, and app-feature requirements.
- Location and language: Availability may vary by country, primary language, and local restrictions.
- Control over wording: Find out whether you can choose among fixed messages, set instructions, or record your own response.
- Review options: Confirm where visitor messages or conversations can be reviewed and whether your subscription supports it.
