Start with capacity, not price. A GPU cloud is only a useful option if the exact GPU model, quantity, region, zone, and start date are available for your workload. Once capacity is confirmed, compare the complete cost—GPU, host CPU and RAM, storage, orchestration, support, data transfer, and connectivity—then choose the contract that matches how predictable your demand is. On-demand instances preserve flexibility; spot capacity can reduce cost but is interruptible; reserved capacity trades flexibility for a committed supply; and a private cluster provides single-tenant isolation for large, planned deployments.
This guide gives you a procurement process, price references, networking checks, and contract clauses so you can compare providers on practical capacity and total cost rather than a headline hourly rate.

Decide which purchasing model fits your workload
The right model depends on whether your demand is experimental, bursty, or predictable. Treat these as operating choices, not merely price tiers.
On-demand instances
On-demand capacity is billed as you use it and normally has the least commitment. It suits prototyping, irregular inference, short training runs, and teams still changing their GPU, image, or region requirements. The trade-off is that an instance can be unavailable when you need it, especially for scarce accelerators. Confirm capacity in the required zone before moving data or scheduling a deadline.

Spot or interruptible capacity
Spot capacity may be cheaper, but it has no universal discount or guaranteed interruption notice. Treat the price and availability as provider-specific and variable. Use it only when your software can checkpoint, restart, and tolerate an uncertain completion time. Keep an on-demand fallback if a missed run has a business cost.
Reserved or committed capacity
A reservation exchanges flexibility for a defined supply and often a lower unit rate. It is appropriate when you can forecast GPU count, region, and utilization over the commitment period. Before signing, verify whether the commitment is tied to a specific SKU, zone, host configuration, or spend amount, and whether unused capacity can be resized or transferred.
Private cloud or dedicated cluster
Private cloud is intended for large, predictable deployments that need isolation and a planned delivery. Lambda describes its Private Cloud as “bare metal, single-tenant clusters for defined reservation periods.” Lambda documentation describes reservations of 1,000 or more B200 GPUs for one to three years; hyperscale reservations of 2,000 to 64,000 GPUs can run for three to ten years. These are procurement-scale arrangements, not a practical starting point for a small experiment. Require delivery milestones and acceptance criteria because the commercial commitment may begin before every node is usable.

GPU listings are not a promise that any quantity is immediately obtainable. Google Cloud states that GPU devices are available only in specific zones and publishes rates by region. Lambda also ties each instance to a geographical region. A quote that omits zone, quantity, or start date is incomplete.
Capacity questions to ask
- Which exact GPU SKU is available, and is the offer for the requested quantity rather than a single test node?
- Which region and zone contain the capacity? Is that location acceptable for data residency, latency, and compliance?
- What is the earliest guaranteed start date, and is it a reservation, a best-effort estimate, or an already-running instance?
- Will all GPUs be delivered in one placement group or distributed across hosts?
- What happens if the provider cannot deliver the quantity on the agreed date?
- Can capacity be held while security, networking, and purchase approvals finish?
Run a capacity proof before migrating data
- Write down the SKU, GPU count, region, zone, host shape, operating system image, and required start date.
- Ask the provider to confirm those fields in writing, including whether the GPUs are reserved or merely listed.
- Launch a small instance in the same location and test the image, drivers, container runtime, storage path, and identity controls.
- For distributed jobs, run a multi-node communication test using the intended framework and placement. A single-GPU smoke test cannot prove cluster performance.
- Only after the proof succeeds, schedule data transfer and commit to a longer term.
Understand what the published GPU prices actually mean
Published rates are useful anchors, not complete budgets. The examples below come from provider pricing pages identified for 2026 and must be read with their region, configuration, and billing definitions.

| Provider and configuration | Published rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud T4 | $0.35 per GPU-hour on demand | Google Cloud 2026 pricing-page example; region-specific rates apply. |
| Google Cloud T4 with one-year commitment | $0.22 per GPU-hour | One-year commitment example on Google Cloud’s 2026 pricing page. |

| CoreWeave GH200 | $6.50 per hour on demand | CoreWeave 2026 pricing page; configuration and regional terms govern the charge. |
| CoreWeave eight-GPU HGX H100 | $49.24 per hour | CoreWeave 2026 pricing page; this is an eight-GPU configuration, not a single H100. |
Do not divide a multi-GPU host price by the GPU count and assume the result is an independent single-GPU rate. Host CPU, memory, local disks, network interfaces, management services, and placement constraints can make the economics different.
Build a total-cost worksheet
For each offer, calculate:
Total cost = GPU or instance charge + host CPU/RAM + local storage + distributed storage + orchestration and management + support + data transfer and egress + public IPs and dedicated connectivity + taxes or other regional charges.
Recommended Free Tools
Record whether each item is hourly, monthly, usage-based, or a one-time fee. Mark minimums, rounding rules, and whether charges continue while an instance is stopped. A low GPU rate can be outweighed by storage that remains allocated, a required support tier, or an expensive path for moving training data.
Compare commitment economics honestly
The T4 examples show the direction of a commitment discount, but they do not establish that every GPU or provider uses the same percentage. Compare the committed price with the number of hours you can actually consume and include the cost of unused capacity. A one-year commitment that is idle for a quarter can cost more than flexible on-demand usage despite its lower nominal rate.
Evaluate GPU topology and interconnect, not just the model name
Two offers with the same accelerator label can behave differently because of host design and interconnect. Lambda notes that SXM-backed systems improve bandwidth between GPUs in one server. That matters for workloads with frequent all-reduce operations, model parallelism, or high-volume GPU-to-GPU transfers.

Questions for single-node jobs
- Are the GPUs connected through an SXM design or another interconnect, and what topology does the provider document?
- How much host CPU and system memory is included?
- Is local scratch storage included, ephemeral, or separately billed?
- Can the node be recreated with the same image and driver versions after a failure?
Questions for multi-node training
- Which network fabric connects nodes, and is the quoted bandwidth dedicated or shared?
- Are all nodes placed together, and is placement guaranteed for the full reservation?
- Are intra-provider transfers free only within a stated boundary, such as a VPC or region?
- What telemetry exposes packet loss, congestion, GPU errors, and collective-operation failures?
Ask for a representative distributed benchmark or run your own acceptance test. A vendor’s theoretical link speed does not guarantee application throughput under your topology, storage pattern, and job size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBudget networking, storage, and egress as first-class costs
Networking can dominate a distributed-training or latency-sensitive-inference design. CoreWeave lists VPC and intra-CoreWeave transfer as free, but that does not make every network path free. Its published charges include public IPs at $4 per IP per month and distributed file storage at $0.070 per GB per month.
| CoreWeave published item | Rate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| VPC and intra-CoreWeave transfer | Free | Confirm the eligible scope, regions, and whether any managed service or cross-region path is excluded. |
| Public IP | $4 per IP per month | Count every address required by nodes, load balancers, bastions, or appliances. |
| Distributed file storage | $0.070 per GB per month | Check replicas, snapshots, minimum allocation, and deletion timing. |
| 10G Direct Connect, dedicated | $1,250 per month | Confirm port, cross-connect, installation, and carrier charges. |
| 10G Direct Connect, virtual | $1,500 per month | Confirm the virtual-connection scope and any third-party network fees. |
| 100G Direct Connect, dedicated | $12,500 per month | Verify term, port availability, and one-time construction charges. |
| 400G Direct Connect, dedicated | $50,000 per month | Verify whether the site and carrier can deliver the required capacity. |
CoreWeave also states that cross-connect, Equinix Fabric or Megaport ports, and virtual-connection charges can be extra. Obtain a diagram showing every hop between your data center, cloud VPC, storage, and GPU nodes. Ask who owns and supports each hop, what failure domain it occupies, and whether the monthly quote includes installation or only recurring service.
Separate data ingress, egress, and replication
Request the price and policy for data entering the GPU environment, leaving it, crossing regions, and moving to another provider. Include checkpoint replication, dataset mirrors, backup copies, container registries, and observability exports. “Free intra-cloud transfer” does not answer what a cross-region, internet, or private interconnect transfer costs.
Check operational readiness before committing
A GPU is productive only when the software and operations around it are reliable. Evaluate these items during the pilot:

- Kubernetes and orchestration: Verify GPU scheduling, device plugins, autoscaling behavior, gang scheduling for multi-node jobs, and access to node-level logs.
- Observability: Require GPU utilization, memory errors, temperature, power, network counters, storage latency, and job-level metrics rather than only host uptime.
- Failure replacement: Ask how failed GPUs or hosts are drained, replaced, and returned to the same topology. Find out whether replacement capacity is guaranteed during shortages.
- Maintenance: Document notice periods, maintenance windows, reboot expectations, and whether reserved time is extended after provider-caused downtime.
- Support: Match response and escalation coverage to your workload’s business hours and incident severity. Identify an escalation path for capacity shortages, not just software tickets.
Write contract terms that protect the workload
A service-level percentage alone is not a complete protection. NVIDIA’s SLA exclusions include incidents tied to customer devices, the internet, bandwidth constraints, attacks, and third-party services. Map those exclusions to your architecture so you know which outages remain your responsibility.
Commercial and delivery terms
- SKU and geography: Name the exact GPU, host shape, region, zone, quantity, and network topology.
- Start and milestones: State the delivery date, staged-delivery milestones, acceptance tests, and remedies for missed dates.
- Minimum spend: Define committed spend, billing units, overage rates, and treatment of unused capacity.
- Term and renewal: Specify the end date, notice period, auto-renewal behavior, and any price change at renewal.
- Cancellation and suspension: Clarify termination for convenience, provider breach, prolonged shortage, security event, or material price change.
Service and risk terms
- Support response: Put severity definitions, response targets, escalation contacts, and communication cadence in the agreement.
- Maintenance and credits: Define notice, maintenance windows, credit calculations, and whether credits are the sole remedy.
- Security responsibilities: Assign duties for identity, host hardening, encryption, vulnerability response, logs, and incident notification.
- Data portability: State export formats, access during termination, deletion timing, retained backups, and the cost of extraction.
- Exit assistance: Require reasonable help with images, Kubernetes manifests, networking, and data transfer if the service ends.
Have legal and security teams review any clause that makes your committed payment non-cancellable while the provider’s delivery obligation is best effort.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test portability before a long reservation
Portability is feasible but not automatic. NVIDIA documents AI Enterprise deployment on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, OCI, Alibaba Cloud, and Tencent Cloud through standard instances, NVIDIA VMIs, and managed Kubernetes. That documentation demonstrates supported deployment paths, not identical pricing, performance, or operational behavior.
Run a portability pilot
- Package the workload in containers and pin the driver, CUDA, framework, and dependency versions.
- Deploy the same image and Kubernetes manifests in a second provider or region.
- Recreate identity, secrets, object-storage access, logging, and network policies without provider-specific assumptions.
- Move a representative dataset and measure transfer time, egress cost, checksum integrity, and restart behavior.
- Run a short training or inference workload, recording throughput, failure recovery, and operator steps.
- Document the exact commands and permissions required to export data and rebuild the service.
Pay particular attention to license treatment, storage semantics, GPU partitioning, scheduler integration, and private-network connectivity. A container that starts elsewhere may still fail to achieve the same performance or may incur a costly data path.

A practical buying sequence
- Define the workload: Record model size, framework, GPU count, memory needs, interconnect sensitivity, training duration, inference latency, data location, and compliance constraints.
- Shortlist compatible SKUs: Compare the exact GPU and host configurations rather than treating model names as interchangeable.
- Verify capacity: Obtain written confirmation of region, zone, quantity, topology, and start date.
- Build the full cost: Add host resources, storage, network transfer, public IPs, direct connectivity, support, and minimums.
- Pilot operations: Test images, drivers, Kubernetes, observability, checkpointing, failure replacement, and a representative distributed job.
- Test exit: Export data, rebuild in a second location, and record time and charges.
- Negotiate protections: Add milestones, remedies, support targets, maintenance rules, security duties, and portability clauses.
- Choose the shortest commitment that matches evidence: Expand to a reservation or private cluster only after utilization and operational assumptions are demonstrated.
Common failure modes and fixes
The advertised GPU is unavailable in the required zone
Fix: Ask for alternate zones or equivalent SKUs before changing architecture. Recheck data-residency and latency implications, then rerun the capacity proof in the proposed location.
The GPU rate looks low but the bill is high
Fix: Reconcile every line item against the total-cost worksheet. Look for persistent distributed storage, host charges, public IPs, support tiers, egress, and idle committed capacity.
Distributed training underperforms
Fix: Check SXM or other intra-node topology, cross-node placement, collective-operation errors, congestion, storage throughput, and CPU feeding the GPUs. Repeat the test on the exact reserved shape.

Fix: Negotiate resizing, transfer, suspension, or termination rights before signing. If those rights are unavailable, model the cost of unused capacity and prefer a shorter term.
A provider outage is excluded from the SLA
Fix: Map the exclusion list to your dependencies, add redundancy where practical, and negotiate remedies for provider-controlled components. Do not treat a headline availability percentage as a guarantee for internet, customer equipment, or third-party links.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose on-demand when requirements or locations are still changing and interruption would be expensive to engineer around.
- Use spot only for checkpointed, restartable work where the provider’s interruption behavior and actual discount are acceptable.
- Choose a reservation when GPU count, region, and utilization are predictable enough to justify commitment and the contract includes usable flexibility.
- Choose a private cluster when you need single-tenant isolation and a large, sustained deployment; plan for delivery milestones, operations, and multi-year lock-in.
The winning quote is the one that can supply the required GPUs in the required place, deliver the network and software behavior your workload needs, and leave you with a manageable exit path. Compare offers only after those conditions are written down and tested.
