The operators are often anonymous. The jokes’ legal status has not been adjudicated in every case, but comedians and journalists have documented striking similarities in wording, premises, delivery setups and, in one comparison, clothing.
How the joke-stealing funnel works
1. An operator builds a repeatable persona
Image and video tools can generate a consistent-looking woman across dozens of short clips. Some operators instead put an AI face onto footage of a real model or creator. WIRED and 404 Media reviewed more than 1,000 AI-influencer accounts in 2024 and found deepfake material on 100 of them. Sixty accounts disclosed AI use; 40 did not.

2. The persona performs recognizable comedy
The operator supplies a joke, premise or routine, sometimes retaining a comedian’s wording. George Brett Olson publicly compared his material and outfit with a Tiffany Sloan clip. Sarah Purdum described one bot as “comedian-esque” but said it did not get the joke. Those are reported comparisons and allegations, not a court finding that every similar video infringes copyright.
3. Instagram supplies the distribution
The clips are edited for short-form viewing. Sexualized visuals can attract the first click even when the comic timing is weak. Olivia Carter said, “I just think it’s encouraging an algorithm that pushes forward like, young hot women.” The same recommendation dynamics that reward a striking image can expose the account to viewers who came for comedy.

4. The profile turns attention into adult-content sales
A bio link sends interested viewers to a paid page. Straight Arrow News reported that one bot selected jokes about dating or women and linked to Fanvue; another reported link led to an OnlyFans page. WIRED documented pay-per-view pages priced from $3 to $22 on one account. In this model, the joke is advertising for the persona rather than the product being sold.
Why these accounts can grow so quickly
High-volume testing
AI lets an operator produce many variants, changing the joke, framing, outfit or caption to see what the recommendation system rewards. Kotaku reported that the Tiffany Sloan account had more than 375,000 followers after roughly three weeks, posted 75 videos and had one clip exceed 7 million views in less than two weeks. The report described views and engagement as assets that could be monetized, not merely as vanity metrics.

A visual advantage over working comics
A comedian must write, perform and publish. An automated account can reuse a successful format at low marginal cost while keeping the same face and body as a recognizable brand. The sexualized image can win attention before a viewer evaluates whether the performance is funny, original or even human.
Follower counts can eclipse the source creators
Straight Arrow News reported bot accounts with approximately 180,000 and 240,000 followers, compared with 113,000 for Olivia Carter and 8,000 for Sarah Purdum. Counts and profile links change, so these figures describe the accounts at the time of that 2026 reporting.

What the documented examples show

Are the “performers” real people?
Sometimes there is no identifiable performer behind the face. An operator may generate the entire character, use synthetic speech and animate a script. In other cases, the account may use footage of a real person with a swapped face or altered body. The WIRED/404 Media review found both kinds of activity, and disclosure was inconsistent: 60 of the reviewed accounts said they used AI, while 40 did not.
That makes an account’s apparent authenticity a poor guide. A profile can have a real operator, a synthetic character, a real model whose likeness was altered, or a mixture of all three. Reporting on these examples has not established the identities of the operators, and anonymity should not be treated as proof of a specific person’s involvement.

How the money moves
- Attention: A provocative image and a familiar joke generate views, comments and follows on Instagram.
- Conversion: The profile directs a fraction of that audience to a subscription or pay-per-view page.
- Retention: The operator can publish more clips featuring the same persona and test which subjects or outfits produce the strongest response.
- Expansion: A large following can support additional paid messages, subscriptions or promotional deals, even when individual clips are not directly paid.
This explains why comedy is useful to the scheme. A recognizable punchline gives viewers a reason to watch and share, while the body and bio link supply the commercial hook. Carter summarized the cultural cost this way: “For comedy in general, we’re creating a world where people expect comics to be like AI-generated women’s bodies.”
What it costs human creators
The harm is not limited to a copied line. Comedians can lose recommendation traffic, followers and the chance to convert a viewer into a fan of their own work. Elaina St James said, “This is probably one of the reasons my views are going down,” while describing the drop from 1–5 million monthly views to below 1 million for ten months.
Best Value
Carter also described a broader pressure on how comedy is valued: “I think Instagram has made a pressure where, like, comedians are now influencers and influencers look a certain way.” Her other warning is about timing and context: “Jokes are meant to happen in real time.” A synthetic performer can detach a line from the human performance, then use the line to sell an unrelated persona.
Can Instagram and adult platforms stop it?
Instagram’s reported enforcement route
Instagram told WIRED that it acts on violations when rights holders or their authorized representatives report them. That makes attribution and evidence central. A creator who believes a routine was copied should preserve the original upload, the disputed clip, dates, account names, captions and side-by-side similarities before filing a report. Platform links and follower counts can change after a complaint.
Fanvue’s stated controls
Fanvue said it bans stolen or deepfaked content and uses automated and human checks. That does not guarantee that every disputed upload is removed immediately; detection and review depend on the material available to moderators and on reports from people with relevant rights or authorization.

- Which original video, script or performance predates the disputed clip.
- The specific words, premise, sequence, visual setup or clothing that appear in both.
- Whether the account labels the persona as AI or uses a real person’s likeness.
- Where the account sends viewers and whether the destination is subscription, pay-per-view or another commercial service.
- How the copying affects reach, income or the creator’s decision to publish.
What is established—and what is not
The reporting establishes a pattern: sexualized AI personas, reportedly reused comedy and a link to paid adult content. It also establishes that some accounts reached hundreds of thousands of followers and that at least one human creator measured a substantial decline in monthly views. It does not establish that every AI comedy account steals jokes, that every account is operated by the same people, or that every alleged copy would meet a court’s legal test for infringement.
Alexios Mantzarlis, Cornell Tech’s trust-and-safety director, called the phenomenon “a possible sign of what social media is going to look like in five years.” The immediate lesson is more concrete: when synthetic bodies and borrowed comedy are optimized together, platform reach can become a sales funnel before attribution, disclosure or consent catches up.
