LiteLLM is both a Python SDK and a self-hosted AI gateway. The SDK gives an application a common interface for different model providers. The proxy gives multiple applications one controlled endpoint that handles authentication, provider credentials, routing, budgets, logging, guardrails, caching and administration. That centralization is useful, but it also makes the gateway a high-trust security boundary: a compromise can expose provider keys, alter routing and affect every application behind it.

What LiteLLM is

LiteLLM addresses a common infrastructure problem: an application may need to call several large-language-model providers, while each provider has different APIs, authentication methods and model names. Instead of embedding a separate integration in every application, a team can use LiteLLM’s common interface and change the configured backend centrally.

The Python SDK

The SDK is a library used inside an application. It presents a broadly consistent calling surface while LiteLLM handles provider-specific request and response differences. Documented provider integrations include OpenAI, Anthropic, Vertex AI, Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, Ollama and many other backends. The practical benefit is portability: changing a model route can require configuration changes rather than rewriting every application integration.

The self-hosted proxy

The proxy is the gateway component. Applications send requests to one network endpoint instead of connecting directly to each provider. The proxy authenticates the caller, checks budgets and permissions, chooses a configured route, calls the provider with server-side credentials, and returns a normalized response.

LiteLLM proxy As a shared service Act as one authenticated endpoint between clients and providers Virtual keys, budgets, routing, retries, fallbacks, load balancing, logs, guardrails, caching and administration

These modes can be used separately or together. A small service may use the SDK directly. A platform team serving many applications is more likely to run the proxy and have clients call it through virtual keys.

How a LiteLLM gateway request works

The gateway pattern is easiest to understand as a sequence of trust decisions:

  1. The client presents a virtual key. The application, team or user authenticates to the gateway rather than receiving a provider’s master credential.
  2. LiteLLM authenticates and authorizes the request. The gateway applies the key’s permissions, project or team association, rate limits and budget rules that have been configured.
  3. The gateway selects a route. Routing can choose among configured providers or model deployments, with retries, fallbacks and load balancing where those features are enabled.
  4. The proxy calls the provider. Provider API keys remain on the gateway side and are used for the outbound request.
  5. The client receives a normalized response. Applications can consume a consistent response shape even when the selected provider differs.

This flow centralizes decisions that would otherwise be duplicated in every application. It also means a gateway outage, misconfiguration or compromise can have a larger blast radius than a single application’s direct integration.

What the gateway centralizes

Provider portability

One endpoint can front several providers and deployment types. This helps when a team needs a fallback during an outage, wants to test a different model, or must place some workloads with a particular provider for geography or governance reasons. Portability is not automatic compatibility: prompts, tool behavior, context limits, pricing and safety behavior can still differ by model, so routes should be tested before production changes.

Credentials and virtual keys

Applications and end users can receive virtual keys scoped by project, team or user. Provider credentials stay in the gateway’s server-side configuration instead of being distributed through source code, mobile clients or customer-facing environments. This reduces the number of places where a provider key can leak, but it concentrates valuable secrets in one service that must be protected carefully.

Budgets, attribution and rate controls

Per-key, per-team and per-user budgets allow an organization to attribute usage and enforce spending limits. Centralized logs can connect a request to its caller, selected route and resulting spend. Rate limits and budget checks are useful for preventing one project from consuming a shared allowance, although they do not replace provider-side quotas or billing controls.

Routing, retries and fallbacks

A gateway can distribute traffic across model deployments, retry transient failures and fall back to another configured route. Load balancing can improve capacity utilization, while a fallback can preserve service during a provider incident. These mechanisms need explicit policies: retries can multiply cost, and a fallback model may produce different quality, latency or data-handling characteristics.

Guardrails, caching and administration

LiteLLM documents guardrails, response caching and an administrative interface as proxy capabilities. Guardrails can enforce an organization’s input or output policy; caching can reduce repeated calls where the application can tolerate cached results. Both require careful design. A cache must not return one user’s sensitive response to another user, and a guardrail failure should be observable rather than silently treated as a successful safety decision.

Do you need an AI gateway?

A gateway is a strong fit when

  • A platform or infrastructure team serves several applications, teams or coding agents and wants one controlled entry point.
  • The organization uses more than one model provider and needs routing, fallback or load balancing.
  • Provider keys must stay out of application code, browser clients and end-user environments.
  • Per-user, per-team or per-project budgets, usage attribution and centralized logs are required.
  • Self-hosting, air-gapped operation or a data-residency control plane is part of the governance requirement.

These needs justify the operational cost of another service because the gateway is solving a shared-control problem rather than merely shortening an API call.

A gateway may be unnecessary when

A small service that uses one provider through a protected backend, has one application owner, and does not need shared budgets, routing or centralized governance can often call that provider directly. Adding a gateway in this situation introduces another deployment, authentication layer and patching responsibility without solving a current problem. This is an architectural judgment based on the documented feature set, not a claim that every small service should avoid LiteLLM.

A practical decision test

Ask whether at least two of these statements are true: multiple independent clients need the same model access; provider credentials need central custody; model routing or failover is a requirement; spend must be attributed to teams or users; or governance requires a self-hosted control plane. If none applies, start with a protected direct integration and reassess when the organization has a concrete shared-control requirement.

Why the gateway is a high-trust security boundary

Check Point Research describes LLM gateways as systems between applications and one or more providers. In practice, the proxy often holds provider credentials, request configuration and usage data while also exposing administrative functions. A successful compromise can therefore affect several downstream model accounts at once, not just one application.

Vulnerabilities reported in 2026

Issue Affected version or range Reported impact Resolution stated by the report
CVE-2026-35029 LiteLLM 1.77.7 was the version assessed by Check Point Research Missing role authorization on /config/update could let a low-privilege authenticated user alter runtime configuration, leading to arbitrary file reads, administrative account takeover and remote code execution through remotely loaded pass-through modules. Check Point Research states it was resolved in LiteLLM 1.83.9.
CVE-2026-59823 Assessed in the same Check Point Research investigation Server-side request forgery through the user_config path could redirect requests to attacker-controlled endpoints and expose provider API keys. Check Point Research states it was resolved in LiteLLM 1.83.9.
CVE-2026-42208 Proxy versions 1.81.16–1.83.6 A critical SQL-injection flaw used to manage LLM API keys. A separate Check Point threat report says patches were issued on April 28, 2026.

Check Point Research published its first findings on October 13, 2026. The version numbers matter: a statement that LiteLLM is “secure” without naming the deployed version, enabled features and exposure is too broad. Operators should verify that their running image is outside the affected ranges and confirm the relevant release notes and fixes before deployment.

What these incidents teach

  • Function-level authorization matters. An authenticated account is not automatically entitled to change runtime configuration.
  • Route classification matters. A path that accepts user-controlled configuration can become an SSRF primitive if destinations are not constrained.
  • Dynamic loading expands the attack surface. Remotely loaded modules can turn configuration compromise into code execution.
  • Secrets need a separate boundary. Provider keys should not be exposed to ordinary clients, logs or untrusted outbound destinations.
  • Input validation and database controls are essential. API-key management paths deserve the same scrutiny as any administrative data interface.

How LiteLLM protects API keys—and what it does not solve

The intended protection is architectural: clients receive gateway-issued virtual keys, while provider keys stay in the proxy’s server-side configuration. The gateway then makes outbound calls on the client’s behalf. This prevents an application from needing every provider credential, but it does not make the proxy a secret vault by itself.

Protect the master key and provider credentials separately from ordinary application configuration. Limit each provider credential to the projects, models or operations it actually needs. Keep secrets out of source control and client-side code, encrypt backups, and rotate keys after suspected compromise. Review logs so that authorization headers and provider responses are not recorded accidentally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbound controls are equally important. Restrict the proxy’s network egress to approved provider and telemetry destinations. That reduces the damage from SSRF and makes unexpected destinations visible. Treat every configuration endpoint as administrative, even when it is reachable only from an internal network.

Safer LiteLLM deployment checklist

  1. Pin a specific version. Use a fixed LiteLLM image or package version rather than a moving latest tag. LiteLLM’s deployment guidance also recommends verifying signed images where supported.
  2. Limit network exposure. Put the proxy on a private network or behind an authenticated reverse proxy or VPN. Expose only the endpoints that clients genuinely require.
  3. Test effective permissions. Create low-privilege test accounts and verify that administrative and configuration endpoints reject unauthorized actions, including attempts to modify /config/update.
  4. Use least-privilege provider keys. Prefer project- or application-scoped credentials and define a documented rotation process.
  5. Protect the master key. Store it in a dedicated secret-management system, restrict access, and encrypt backups. Do not place it in browser code or distribute it to end users.
  6. Constrain egress. Allow outbound connections only to approved provider and telemetry destinations; alert on unexpected DNS names, IP ranges or ports.
  7. Log the right events. Record authentication decisions, configuration changes, provider selection, spend and unusual egress. Redact tokens and sensitive prompt or response content according to policy.
  8. Alert on abuse. Watch for privilege changes, sudden spend spikes, new routes, repeated authentication failures and traffic to destinations outside the approved list.
  9. Patch as an operating process. Include the gateway in dependency scanning, penetration tests, vulnerability triage and incident-response plans. Track the exact running version rather than relying on a package manifest alone.
  10. Prepare for compromise. Keep an inventory of provider keys, know how to revoke them, preserve relevant logs, and document how to isolate the proxy without taking unrelated applications offline.

The first checklist item follows LiteLLM’s deployment guidance. The remaining controls are defensive measures derived from the gateway’s high-trust role and the failure modes described in the Check Point reports.

Operating the proxy in production

Choose a deployment shape

LiteLLM’s production guidance covers Docker images, Postgres-backed deployments, monolithic or split services, multiple replicas behind a load balancer, and infrastructure managed with Helm or Terraform. A monolithic deployment can be simpler for a small internal platform. Splitting services may improve isolation and scaling, but it increases operational complexity and the number of boundaries that must be secured.

Scale deliberately

Multiple replicas behind a load balancer can provide capacity and availability, but every replica must use consistent configuration, secrets and version pinning. Shared state and administrative changes need a durable backing design; a Postgres-backed deployment is one documented option. Test failover and configuration propagation before relying on them during an outage.

Manage configuration as code where appropriate

Helm or Terraform can make deployments repeatable and auditable. They should not turn secrets into plain text in repositories or state files. Separate secret injection from non-sensitive routing configuration, review changes, and require approval for routes that add providers, dynamic modules or new egress destinations.

How to compare LiteLLM with another gateway

The most useful comparison is not a feature-count contest. Evaluate the controls that determine whether the gateway fits your risk and operating model.

Evaluation axis Questions to answer
Provider coverage and portability Does it support the providers and deployment types you use, and can you change routes without rewriting clients?
Traffic behavior Are routing, retries, fallbacks and load balancing explicit, testable and observable?
Identity and limits Are virtual keys, RBAC, budgets and rate limits granular enough for your teams and projects?
Observability Can operators audit authentication, configuration changes, provider selection, latency and cost attribution?
Deployment model Can it run self-hosted, in a managed arrangement or in an air-gapped environment required by your governance rules?
Secret and supply-chain security How are secrets stored, how quickly are vulnerabilities patched, and can image provenance be verified?
Enterprise governance Are SSO or SAML, support commitments, audit features and contractual controls available at the level your organization needs?

The bottom line

LiteLLM is most valuable when model access has become shared infrastructure. Its SDK reduces provider-specific integration work; its proxy centralizes identity, credentials, routing, budgets and operations. That same concentration makes the proxy a security-critical service. Run it only when those shared controls justify the added operational burden, pin and patch the exact version, keep the service private, test authorization on administrative routes, restrict egress and maintain a clear key-rotation and incident-response plan.
