Publishers try to detect and contain it with a mix of server analysis, client protections, system-level security and enforcement, each with trade-offs for privacy, performance and trust.
What AI is changing—and what is not established
Riot says advances in AI-assisted reverse engineering have expanded the ranks of would-be hackers, and that abuse of game-memory access is being used to build cheats and bot farms. That is Riot’s account of its own threat assessment, not an independently measured estimate of an industry-wide change. Public sources do not establish what proportion of cheats use AI, or that AI is involved in every kind of cheating. Riot’s October 2026 notice

The significance is less that AI replaces every existing cheat than that it may help more people analyze software and automate abuse. The underlying targets remain familiar: game code, information available on a player’s machine, inputs, and match or account systems.

Cheating is not one technique. The specific examples depend on the game: a shooter may be affected by automated aiming or hidden-player information, while a sports game may be targeted through fabricated match data. Code injected into the game
An internal cheat inserts code into the game process or otherwise manipulates its running state. Depending on the game, this can enable an aimbot that aims automatically, a triggerbot that fires when a target is detected, or wallhacks and ESP that reveal information the player should not have.
External tools and automated input
An external cheat acts outside the game’s process. It might inspect what is displayed on screen and automate a response; EA describes pixel bots as one possible form of external aimbot. Automation can also mimic or manipulate inputs. Anti-cheat providers report defending against macros, malicious devices and synthetic input, but the existence of such defenses does not show that every automated input is cheating: context and the game’s rules matter.
Botting and altered match information
Bots automate play or other activity at scale, including the bot farms described by Riot. Cheating can also target information beyond a player’s immediate controls: EA cites fake match information in EA SPORTS FC as an example. These cases differ from an aimbot and may require different evidence and responses.

How anti-cheat systems look for suspicious activity
There is no single vantage point that reveals every cheat. A 2025 systematic review groups defenses into server-side detection, client-side anti-tamper, kernel-level drivers and hardware-assisted trusted execution. It evaluates approaches in terms of what they can detect, their performance overhead, privacy impact and scalability. Alangari and Alharbi’s 2025 review

The table describes broad categories, not a guarantee that a particular system catches every cheat. Publishers combine approaches because each has blind spots and costs; commercial systems also disclose limited technical detail, as the review notes.
Why kernel anti-cheat is a trade-off, not a simple verdict
A kernel driver can have a broader view of system activity than a game-only process. That matters when a cheat operates outside the game process, including at kernel level; EA gives this as its rationale for Javelin. But deeper system access also makes questions about privacy, stability, compatibility and trust more consequential. Whether a specific implementation is acceptable depends on its protections and policies, not simply on the fact that it uses a driver.

EA says Javelin runs only while a protected EA game is running and automatically uninstalls if all protected EA games are removed. Those statements describe EA’s product, not all anti-cheat drivers. What publishers are doing in 2026
EA: Javelin coverage, system requirements and compatibility
In its September 10, 2026 update, EA says Javelin protects 20 titles and reports 57.1 million players safeguarded and 26.7 million cheat attempts prevented. EA also reports a “99%+ accuracy rate in cheat detection” and a stability error rate below 1%. These are EA’s own operational figures and wording, not independently validated measures or estimates of cheating across the industry. EA’s September 2026 update
The same update says more than 4.8 million players enabled Secure Boot after EA introduced configurable requirements. EA says it added anti-DMA defenses and protections against input manipulation, malicious devices, macros and synthetic input. It also says TPM 2.0 is required for Battlefield 6 and that configurable Secure Boot requirements began with Battlefield 2042. These are EA product and policy details; they are not requirements for all online games.

Compatibility is part of enforcement, not a side issue: EA reports that 45,000 players’ launch issues were resolved within 48 hours after an AMD Anti-Lag compatibility fix in October 2025. That figure describes a compatibility fix reported by EA in 2026, not cheating prevalence.
Riot: restricting direct game-memory access
Riot says that, starting October 6, 2026, it will block unknown third-party applications from accessing game memory by default across League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics and VALORANT. Riot says currently known and approved tools have an extended grace period until April 2027 to move affected features to official APIs, request API data, or retire unsupported features. The policy can affect legitimate overlays and trackers as well as malicious tools that rely on direct memory access. Riot has also reported more than 3.6 million accounts banned for cheating during Vanguard’s first four years, as of September 2024. Riot says that total excludes additional actions against botting, boosting and intentionally queueing with cheaters. Call of Duty: disruption, investigation and account action
Activision describes RICOCHET as using in-match mitigations to disrupt suspected cheaters, gather behavioral information and, where appropriate, support permanent account bans. The company reported more than 55,000 accounts hit with in-game mitigations since August in its September 2025 update; that is a mitigation count, not a count of confirmed bans. Activision also describes Remote Attestation tied to Windows security features such as TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Its Limited Matchmaking placement is an alarm for examination, not proof that an account is a confirmed cheater; party members can also enter the limited pool because of another member. In that same update, Activision said teamers in the Top 250 remained below 5% at any given time after weekly purges. That figure concerns teaming in the named ranked environment, not all cheating in Call of Duty or online games generally.

Publisher figures can show what a company says its system did, but they do not automatically show how common cheating is among all games or players. “Cheat attempts prevented,” mitigations, bans, accuracy and stability each describe different things. Publishers may also use different time windows, definitions and denominators, so their numbers should not be ranked as if they measured the same outcome.

Why the contest does not have a one-time fix
Cheats adapt to detection, while publishers adjust signals, client protections, platform requirements and enforcement. A measure that raises the cost of one technique may not stop a different one; stronger visibility can also mean higher system-access, compatibility or trust costs. Activision puts the ongoing nature of the problem plainly: “There’s no one-and-done solution to solving the challenge of cheating.” Team RICOCHET, September 2025
For players, the practical distinction is between a system signal and a final finding: a restricted matchmaking placement or a blocked third-party tool is not necessarily a confirmed ban. Publisher policies and technical approaches differ, and enforcement figures should be read in the scope their publisher gives them.
