UBS’s 2026 Global Family Office Report finds that 65% of surveyed family offices currently allocate to artificial intelligence, while 7% plan to add exposure over the next 12 months. The figures show broad participation, not that AI makes up 65% of portfolios—and they do not prove that fear of missing out caused those investment decisions.
What the UBS survey says about family offices and AI
UBS describes AI as the leading thematic investment priority among respondents. About half of the family offices with AI allocations invest in each of three parts of the technology value chain: data-center infrastructure, AI software and platforms, and semiconductor producers. That does not mean every participating office invests in all three.

The distinction between participation and portfolio size matters: 65% is the share of surveyed offices reporting some allocation to the AI theme. It is not the proportion of their assets invested in AI. Separately, 7% said they planned to add AI exposure in the 12 months following the survey.
Why the report raises the question of FOMO
The report sets widespread AI participation alongside concern about valuations and the possibility that the market is overheating. UBS interprets this combination as consistent with fear of missing out: offices remain involved in a prominent investment theme even as they weigh valuation risk.

That is an interpretation, not a demonstrated cause. The allocation and intention figures do not show why any particular office invested. The report also includes an anonymous Asian client’s comment: “FOMO means family offices are investing in the rival AI ecosystems developing in the US and China.” This is one client’s view, not a survey measurement of motivation.
It also quotes the unnamed CEO of a Hong Kong-based family office company saying family offices are “frightened of missing out” and investing in both rival AI ecosystems. The CEO describes diversification across strategies and asset classes to capture opportunities along the AI value chain; this quotation should not be read as a finding about all respondents.

Where family offices are looking across the AI value chain
- Data-center infrastructure: the facilities and infrastructure supporting AI computing.
- AI software and platforms: applications and platforms built around AI capabilities.
- Semiconductor producers: companies supplying chips used in AI systems.
UBS identifies these as prominent categories among offices with AI allocations. Its summary does not establish that all offices hold each category, nor does it provide a basis here for comparing the performance, fees, or merits of specific investments. The report describes exposure as being refined amid valuation concerns rather than simply abandoned.

The report’s seventh edition draws on online responses from 307 UBS client family offices in more than 30 markets, collected from January 22 through March 30, 2026. Participating families had an average net worth of USD 2.7 billion, while their family offices managed an average of USD 1.3 billion in assets. The surveyed families’ combined wealth was USD 627.4 billion.

Those figures describe a substantial sample of UBS clients, but they do not make it representative of every family office worldwide. The report also says 60% of respondents planned changes to their strategic asset allocation over the next 12 months, providing broader context for the reported AI intentions.
