Broad-market index funds usually have less concentration risk than AI-focused ETFs. A broad fund owns companies across many industries, while an AI ETF intentionally gathers businesses linked to one theme and can become clustered in semiconductors, software and other technology-supply-chain groups. That diversification advantage is relative, not absolute: a market-cap-weighted broad index can still be dominated by its largest companies.
The useful comparison is therefore not the number of tickers. Check each fund’s current top-10 percentage, largest single position, sector and industry weights, index-construction rules, geographic scope, rebalancing schedule, costs and overlap with the funds you already own. The figures below are date-stamped because holdings change.

What concentration risk actually measures
Concentration risk is the damage a portfolio can suffer when too much of its result depends on one company, industry, investment theme, country or common economic factor. Two funds can each hold hundreds of stocks yet carry very different concentrations.

This is the percentage represented by the largest holding and by the top 10 holdings combined. A large top position means one earnings miss, lawsuit, product failure or valuation reset can move the entire fund. The top-10 figure shows whether that dependence is spread across several companies or concentrated in a small leadership group.

Industry and sector concentration
Sector labels can conceal a tighter industry cluster. An AI fund may show a broad “information technology” allocation while much of that exposure is actually semiconductors, semiconductor equipment, cloud infrastructure and a few software categories that respond to the same spending cycle. Industry weights are therefore more informative than a sector heading alone.
Theme, factor and geographic concentration
Stocks selected for an AI theme often share growth, momentum and high-valuation characteristics. They may fall together when interest rates rise even if their businesses are unrelated. A fund can also be concentrated in one country or currency. Geographic diversification matters only when the index rules actually include multiple markets; do not infer it from a thematic label.
Overlap concentration
Your personal concentration is the exposure in all of your accounts, not the number printed on one fund’s fact sheet. Holding an AI ETF alongside a technology fund and a broad index can leave the same mega-cap companies occupying a much larger share of your portfolio than any single statement suggests.

Why AI ETFs can be tightly clustered
The selection rule starts with a narrow universe
Thematic indexes do not begin with every listed company and then diversify across the economy. They first identify companies considered relevant to artificial intelligence, data or related products and services. That screen naturally favors businesses in the same supply chain, so diversification is limited before weighting even begins.
AIQ: a documented semiconductor and technology tilt
The Global X AIQ prospectus filed with the SEC on April 1, 2026 says the fund tracks the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index. As of January 31, 2026, the prospectus states that the underlying index “was concentrated in the semiconductors and semiconductor equipment industry and had significant exposure to the information technology sector.” This is a direct warning that a thematic label can translate into a specific industry bet.

First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF: 50-company construction
The First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF prospectus filed with the SEC on February 2, 2026 says its index selects the top 50 companies using a combination of a “Revenue Assessment” and market capitalization for companies stemming from artificial-intelligence products and services. Fifty holdings can be a meaningful portfolio, but the rules are still thematic: the eligible businesses are chosen for AI connection, not for representation of the whole economy.
Revenue-based selection can identify companies with substantial AI-related activity, while the market-cap component can increase the weight of already-large firms. The prospectus does not provide a universal concentration threshold, so investors should calculate the fund’s current top-10 and largest-position percentages themselves.
Why supply-chain stocks can move together
Chip designers, equipment makers, foundries, cloud providers and software vendors may have different products, yet their results can depend on a common capital-spending cycle. If customers slow data-center construction, several holdings can weaken at once. That correlation is concentration risk even when no single stock dominates.
Why broad-market index funds are usually less concentrated
More industries and a larger eligible universe
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) issuer describes the S&P 500 as measuring the large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market. An SEC filing says the index includes 500 selected companies listed on national stock exchanges and spans a broad range of major industries. That design reduces dependence on any one theme: financials, health care, industrials, consumer companies, communications and other sectors participate alongside technology.

Market-cap weighting can recreate concentration
SPY and many other broad funds weight companies by market value. A company that grows much larger automatically takes a larger percentage of the index, even if the fund has not made an active thematic decision. State Street’s SPY holdings page reported Broadcom at 2.47% of assets on September 16, 2026. That single-stock weight is far below the potential clustering of a narrow theme, but it demonstrates that “500 stocks” does not mean equal influence.

What broad-market exposure does not cover
A U.S. large-cap index is not the same as a global portfolio, a small-cap portfolio or a bond allocation. It can be diversified within large U.S. equities while remaining concentrated by country, company size and equity risk. Whether that is enough depends on what else you own and what loss you can tolerate.

How to inspect concentration before buying
- Open the latest holdings file. Use the issuer’s holdings page, not an old article or a search-result snippet. Record the “as of” date because positions change daily.
- Add the top 10 weights. This is a quick measure of how much of the fund depends on its leaders. Keep the individual percentages as well; two funds can have the same top-10 total but very different largest positions.
- Record the largest single position. Compare it with your tolerance for a one-company shock. A low largest position does not remove risk if the next nine holdings are highly correlated.
- Break sector labels into industries. Look specifically for semiconductors, semiconductor equipment, software, hardware, cloud infrastructure and other groups that may respond to the same spending cycle.
- Identify the weighting formula. Market-cap weighting rewards the biggest companies. Equal weighting limits individual positions but may increase turnover. Capped or revenue-based rules create different exposures. Read how the index handles new entrants, deletions and corporate actions.
- Check overlap with your existing funds. Export holdings into a spreadsheet, match company names or identifiers, and sum the percentages across accounts. Count a stock only once when measuring the number of distinct companies, but add its weights when measuring your economic exposure.
- Review geography, currency and costs. Confirm where companies are listed, whether foreign-currency movements matter, how often the portfolio changes and what the current expense ratio is. None of these values should be inferred from a fund’s name.
Useful concentration calculations
Top-10 percentage
Add the ten largest holdings: Top-10 concentration = weight1 + weight2 + ... + weight10. Compare the result with the remainder of the portfolio. A fund with many small holdings can still be top-heavy if the first ten account for most assets.
Effective number of holdings
The effective number of holdings, sometimes called the inverse Herfindahl measure, is calculated as 1 / sum(weight_i²) when weights are expressed as decimals. Equal weights produce a number close to the actual count; a few dominant positions make it much smaller. Use the same date and currency basis for every fund you compare. This statistic is a diagnostic, not a regulatory diversification guarantee.

Industry concentration
Sum the weights of economically similar industries rather than relying only on the issuer’s broad sector buckets. For an AI comparison, separately total semiconductors and semiconductor equipment, then examine software, hardware and cloud-related groups. Document your classification so the comparison is consistent.
Portfolio-level overlap
If an AI ETF is 10% of your portfolio and one company represents 8% of that ETF, the position contributes 0.8 percentage points to your total portfolio before considering any other fund that owns the same company. Repeat the calculation for each overlapping name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are AI ETFs too concentrated?
“Too concentrated” is an investor-specific judgment, not a fixed property of every AI ETF. It may be unsuitable as a core holding when its industry weights, top-10 total or overlap with your existing technology exposure would make a normal AI-sector drawdown threaten your financial plan. It can be reasonable as a deliberately limited satellite position when you understand that the fund is a theme bet and can withstand losses without selling at the wrong time.
Questions to answer before using one
- What percentage of your total portfolio would be exposed to AI-related companies after including existing funds?
- Could you keep the position through a multi-year period in which AI capital spending, valuations or interest-rate conditions deteriorate?
- Are you buying a distinct source of return, or duplicating companies already dominant in your broad-market fund?
- Does the index’s selection rule match your definition of AI, or does it mainly capture large semiconductor and technology companies?
- Will the fund’s trading costs, taxes and rebalancing turnover fit the account in which you hold it?
No authoritative source cited here prescribes a universal AI-ETF allocation percentage. Set any limit from your own objectives, time horizon, emergency reserves and ability to absorb a concentrated loss, rather than from a generic rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is an S&P 500 ETF diversified enough?
For exposure to U.S. large-cap stocks, an S&P 500 ETF is substantially broader than a single-theme AI ETF because the index spans 500 companies and many major industries. It is not automatically diversified enough for every investor. Market-cap weighting can leave the largest technology companies with substantial combined influence, and the fund does not supply international stocks, smaller companies, bonds or cash.
Best Value
When it may be sufficient for a specific role
It can serve as a straightforward U.S. large-cap core when your plan intentionally accepts that market, size and equity exposure and when other holdings cover any desired international, small-cap or fixed-income diversification.
When to add something else
Consider a different fund category only to solve a defined gap: geographic exposure, company-size exposure, income needs or lower equity volatility. Adding an AI ETF does not solve the diversification gaps of an S&P 500 fund; it generally increases the same technology and growth sensitivities you are trying to measure.
Weighting methods and why they change the answer
Market-cap weighting
Weights rise with company value. The method is transparent and typically has low turnover, but successful companies become larger portions of the index. SPY’s 2.47% Broadcom position on September 16, 2026 is one dated example of how a broad fund can still have a meaningful individual holding.

Equal weighting
Each constituent starts with a similar weight, reducing dependence on the largest names. It requires regular rebalancing and can create greater exposure to smaller companies and trading costs. Do not assume that equal weight is automatically safer; it changes, rather than removes, concentration and factor risks.
Capped and rules-based weighting
Caps limit a single company or group, while revenue, volatility or other formulas steer exposure according to stated rules. Read the exact cap and the rebalance trigger. A cap at the company level may not prevent a large semiconductor-industry total.
Common mistakes that make concentration look smaller
- Counting tickers instead of weights: 50 or 500 names say little about how assets are distributed.
- Using stale holdings: A dated snapshot can miss a rebalance, merger or market move.
- Treating all technology as independent: Suppliers and customers can share the same demand shock.
- Ignoring indirect ownership: The same company may appear in an AI ETF, a broad index, a retirement plan and an individual-stock account.
- Comparing different dates: Calculate every top-10 and sector figure using holdings from the same period where possible.
- Assuming a broad label means global diversification: Confirm the countries, exchanges and currencies in the mandate.
- Focusing only on expense ratio: Fees matter, but a cheaper fund with unwanted concentration may be the more expensive risk for your plan.
- Using a fixed allocation rule: The right thematic percentage depends on the rest of your portfolio and your capacity for loss.
A practical review schedule
At purchase, save the prospectus, methodology summary, holdings date, expense ratio and rebalance policy. At each scheduled rebalance, recalculate the top-10, largest position and industry totals. Between rebalances, check the holdings when a major acquisition, index change or sharp market move could materially alter weights.
Set a personal threshold for investigation rather than an automatic sell trigger. If a fund crosses it, determine whether the change came from price appreciation, an index rule or a corporate action. Then decide whether to rebalance in a tax-aware way. The threshold is a portfolio-management choice, not a feature promised by the fund.
Decision framework
Choose the broad-market fund as the default core when
- Your priority is reducing dependence on one industry or technology theme.
- You want exposure to many major industries through one U.S. large-cap vehicle.
- You can accept market-cap concentration and will monitor the largest holdings.
- Your remaining portfolio supplies any international, small-cap or bond exposure you need.
Consider an AI ETF only as a deliberate satellite when
- You specifically want an AI-related tilt after measuring existing overlap.
- You understand the fund’s industry and factor concentrations from its current holdings.
- You can tolerate correlated losses across semiconductors, software and other technology groups.
- The position size is consistent with your own risk capacity; no universal percentage is established by the cited sources.
Pause and investigate when
- The top-10 or largest position is materially higher than you expected.
- One industry dominates even though the fund is marketed with a broad technology label.
- The index methodology, geographic scope, rebalance schedule or current fees are unclear.
- The proposed purchase mostly duplicates companies you already own.
Answer to the exact question
For most investors comparing like-for-like equity exposure, a broad-market index fund has less concentration risk than an AI ETF because its eligible companies span more industries and are not selected solely for an AI connection. The advantage is strongest when the broad fund’s top-10 and industry weights are moderate. It narrows when market-cap leadership becomes dominant, so verify the dated holdings rather than relying on the fund label or ticker count.
