An AI email connector is an authorized link between an AI app and an email service. Depending on its tools and permissions, it can search messages, read threads, draft replies, or take actions such as sending, labeling, or deleting mail. MCP—the Model Context Protocol—is one way to connect AI apps to tools and data; it is not another name for every email integration.
Official documentation describes a Google-made Gmail connector for Claude and a Microsoft 365 connector for eligible organizations. OpenAI’s cited MCP documentation covers API integrations, not whether consumer ChatGPT currently has the same built-in email connection.

What is an AI email connector?
A connector is the integration a user authorizes so an AI application can work with a service such as Gmail or Microsoft 365. It acts as a bridge; it does not automatically give the AI unrestricted access to an inbox. What it can do depends on the tools exposed by the connector and the permissions granted during setup.

Those tools may be read-only, such as searching or opening messages, or may include actions that create, change, or delete data. Check the tool inventory and authorization prompt rather than assuming that “connect email” means reading only.

What does MCP mean?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic for AI applications to connect to tools and data. An MCP server makes tools or data available to an AI client. A remote MCP server is hosted online; configuring a local MCP server is a separate arrangement.
An email connector may use MCP, but the terms are not interchangeable. MCP describes a way to connect applications and tools; “email connector” describes the email integration exposed to a user. Google’s documented Gmail setup for Claude uses a remote MCP endpoint and OAuth 2.0.

What can Claude’s email connectors do?
Gmail
Google’s official Claude connector listing says it can search inbox messages, read full threads, and draft replies. Its tool inventory also includes sending messages, applying labels, and moving messages to trash. The distinction matters: a connector that can draft is not necessarily limited to drafting.

Claude’s Microsoft 365 connector is intended for eligible organizational accounts. It uses delegated permissions: Claude acts on behalf of the individual user and can access only data that user is already allowed to view in Microsoft 365. It is read-only by default; writing requires additional administrative approval and organizational enablement.

How do I connect Gmail to Claude?
Google documents a custom-connector route using its Gmail MCP server. The following values are the ones in Google’s current guide and may change as product instructions evolve.
- Create an OAuth 2.0 client: In Google Cloud, configure an OAuth client for the integration. Follow Google’s current requirements for the client and authorized redirect URI.
- Set the callback URI: Use
https://claude.ai/api/mcp/auth_callbackas the callback URI specified in Google’s guide. - Add the remote connector in Claude: Enter the server URL
https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1and configure the OAuth client details as prompted. - Authorize and inspect access: Complete the Google authorization flow, then review the connector’s available tools and the account permissions before using it.
Google’s guide lists Claude Enterprise, Pro, Max, or Team for this custom-connector setup route. It identifies Streamable HTTP as the transport and OAuth 2.0 as the authentication method for other MCP clients.

How does the Microsoft 365 connection work?
This connector has an organization-level setup before individual users connect their accounts.
- Administrator consent: A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator grants tenant consent.
- Enable the connector where required: Team and Enterprise organizations enable it in Claude’s organization settings.
- Connect user accounts: Each eligible member connects using their own Microsoft 365 account.
- Request write tools separately: To enable write actions, the updated permission set must be approved and the organization must enable those tools.
The cited Claude guide requires a Microsoft Entra tenant tied to a Microsoft Business plan. It excludes personal Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts. The default connector access is read-only.

Before choosing, compare the email provider and account type, supported AI product and plan, read versus write tools, administrator requirements, authentication and permissions, and whether the server is vendor-hosted or third-party. The Gmail and Microsoft 365 routes are distinct integrations, not interchangeable setup procedures.
Can ChatGPT connect to Gmail or Outlook?
The available OpenAI documentation describes MCP integrations for the API. It does not establish whether the consumer ChatGPT product currently offers a built-in Gmail or Outlook connector with the same workflow documented for Claude. Do not infer consumer availability or setup steps from API support alone.
Is it safe to connect an inbox to an AI?
Safety depends on the connector’s operator, its permissions, the tools it exposes, and how actions are approved. Email content and attachments can contain untrusted instructions, including prompt-injection attempts. OpenAI flags this as a concern when MCP tools can access sensitive information or perform actions, and recommends approval controls for sensitive operations.

- Use the narrowest access that works: Review OAuth scopes and the authorization prompt. Avoid granting write access if you only need search or summaries.
- Check the server and its credentials: Anthropic advises connecting only to trusted remote servers. A shared credential used by a Team or Enterprise connector can give every connector user the access that credential holds, so it should be narrowly scoped.
- Understand where remote requests come from: Claude reaches remote custom connectors from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure, not from the user’s local network. A private server may need network allowlisting or may not be reachable.
- Keep sensitive actions under review: Require approval for sending, deleting, or otherwise consequential actions where available; treat email content as data, not as trusted instructions.
- Disconnect unused access: Remove a connector when it is no longer needed.
