1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—properly configured .ai and .com domains work with the same Internet services. Both are DNS top-level domains that can host websites, HTTPS, email, APIs, redirects and SaaS integrations. The important differences are who administers each suffix, how people interpret the brand, what names are available, and how lookup and privacy policies operate. Choose .ai when an artificial-intelligence signal and a usable name matter most; choose .com when the broadest familiarity and generic-web recognition are priorities.
What .ai and .com actually are
A domain suffix is the final label in a fully qualified domain name. In example.ai, .ai is the top-level domain (TLD) and example is the registrable label. In example.com, the equivalent TLD is .com. Neither suffix is a separate web protocol, hosting platform or encryption method.

When someone enters a hostname, software asks the Domain Name System (DNS) for records associated with that name. DNS can return an IPv4 address (A), IPv6 address (AAAA), an alias (CNAME), mail servers (MX), verification and authentication data (TXT), or other records. The suffix matters because it identifies which registry and authoritative nameservers are responsible for the top-level delegation; the service you run depends on the records and applications you configure below it.
IANA lists .ai as an active country-code TLD managed by the Government of Anguilla. IANA’s root-zone database lists .com as a generic TLD delegation. That administrative distinction does not prevent either suffix from serving a global audience.

Who owns and governs each suffix?
.ai is Anguilla’s country-code TLD
The Government of Anguilla is the manager named in IANA’s root database for .ai. Registry policy, nameserver operation and domain procedures therefore come from the Anguilla registry and its published rules. A registrar is a separate company that accepts your order, handles billing and provides account tools; it does not become the owner of the TLD.
Although .ai is a country-code suffix, it is not restricted to Anguillan residents. WIPO’s .AI information page states: Registration of ".ai" domain names is unrestricted.
Anyone who can complete a registrar’s registration and verification process can generally apply, subject to the registry’s rules and the specific registrar’s policies.
.com is a generic TLD in the ICANN system
IANA classifies .com as a generic top-level-domain delegation. Its registration, transfer, data-access and registrar obligations operate within ICANN’s contracted-party framework. You still buy a particular name through a registrar, while the registry operates the .com namespace and publishes its authoritative DNS data.
The practical ownership question is therefore two-layered: you hold registration rights to a chosen name for the paid term, while a registry and its governing policy maintain the suffix. Renewals, transfers, expiration, redemption and dispute procedures are determined by the registry, registrar agreement and applicable ICANN or local rules.
Are .ai domains as good as .com domains?
For core Internet operation, neither suffix is inherently better. A correctly delegated name under either one can resolve to your server, terminate TLS, send and receive mail, connect to an API, point at a content-delivery network, or redirect to another hostname. The decision is mainly about brand meaning, name availability, policy and the particular software ecosystem you need to support.
| Decision factor | .ai | .com |
|---|---|---|
| Administrative type | Country-code TLD managed by the Government of Anguilla | Generic TLD delegation in the ICANN policy environment |
| Registration eligibility | Unrestricted according to WIPO’s .AI page | Generally open registration through accredited registrars, subject to ICANN and registrar rules |
| Brand signal | Strong association with artificial intelligence and machine learning | Familiar, general-purpose commercial web identity |
| DNS and web use | Supports ordinary DNS records, websites, APIs and redirects | Supports the same ordinary DNS records, websites, APIs and redirects |
| HTTPS | Certificate must cover the exact .ai hostname | Certificate must cover the exact .com hostname |
| Works with MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC when configured and accepted by recipients | Works with the same mail records and recipient checks | |
| Lookup systems | WHOIS and RDAP are available through .AI services | RDAP is the standard lookup method; ICANN records a continuing WHOIS exception for .com |
| Published registration count | 598,007 domains reported by the .AI FAQ on 2025-01-02 | Not stated by the sources used for this comparison |
The table describes capabilities, not a guarantee that every third-party service treats every TLD identically. A corporate firewall, identity provider, payment platform or email filter can impose its own allow-list. Test the exact services your project depends on before a public launch.

How DNS resolution works for either suffix
When a browser requests www.example.ai or www.example.com, a recursive resolver follows the DNS hierarchy. It reaches the TLD’s authoritative nameservers, then asks the domain’s authoritative nameserver for the requested record. The resolver caches the answer for the record’s time to live (TTL), and the browser uses the resulting address or alias to connect.

A DS record is the parent-side part of DNSSEC, allowing validating resolvers to authenticate a signed child zone. AWS Route 53 documents .ai registration and DNSSEC configuration, demonstrating that .ai can be managed through mainstream DNS tooling.
Records you normally configure
- A and AAAA: point a hostname to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
- CNAME: alias a subdomain such as
wwworapito a service hostname. - MX: identify the servers that receive mail for the domain.
- TXT: publish ownership proofs, SPF policy, DKIM keys and DMARC policy.
- CAA: optionally restrict which certificate authorities may issue certificates for the domain.
- NS and DS: delegate DNS and, when enabled, publish DNSSEC chain data.
Delegating a new domain
- Register the exact name with a registrar and confirm that the registration is active rather than merely pending.
- Choose authoritative nameservers at your DNS host, or use the registrar’s DNS service.
- Enter those nameservers in the registrar control panel. The registry publishes the delegation into the TLD zone.
- Create the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT records required by your website, mail provider and other services.
- Wait for caches to expire according to the old and new TTL values, then query from more than one resolver.
- Enable DNSSEC only after the DS value and child-zone signing configuration match; an incorrect DS record can make a valid domain fail to resolve for validating users.
Useful checks include dig NS example.ai, dig A www.example.ai, dig MX example.ai and dig TXT example.ai. Replace the name and record type for a .com domain. A timeout, SERVFAIL or an answer from an unexpected nameserver usually indicates delegation, DNSSEC or propagation trouble rather than a limitation of the suffix.
Will a .ai domain work for websites, HTTPS and APIs?
Yes. Point the hostname at your web server, hosting platform or CDN, then request a TLS certificate for every hostname users will visit. A certificate for example.ai does not automatically cover example.com, and a certificate for the apex does not necessarily cover www unless the certificate includes both names.
HTTPS deployment checklist
- Verify that the A, AAAA or CNAME record reaches the intended service.
- Add the exact .ai or .com hostname in the hosting platform’s domain settings.
- Issue a certificate containing the apex name and any required subdomains.
- Configure an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect after the certificate is active.
- Update application base URLs, callback URLs, CORS allow-lists, webhook endpoints and OAuth redirect URIs.
- Retest both the apex and
wwwforms, including IPv6 if an AAAA record is published.
Certificate authorities validate control of the hostname; they do not require an artificial-intelligence business, Anguillan presence or a particular TLD category. The operational risk is an omitted hostname or stale DNS record, not the two-letter ending.
Will .ai work for email?
Yes, provided the mail system and recipient policies accept the domain and your DNS authentication is complete. Create MX records for the receiving service, then publish the sender-policy records it specifies.

Required mail records
- MX: routes incoming mail to the provider’s servers.
- SPF: lists permitted sending infrastructure in a single policy record.
- DKIM: publishes a public key used to verify cryptographic signatures on outgoing messages.
- DMARC: tells recipients how to handle messages that fail alignment and where aggregate or forensic reports should go.
Use the same process for .com. If mail sent from a .ai address is rejected, inspect the recipient’s SMTP response, SPF and DKIM alignment, DMARC policy, reverse-DNS reputation and any corporate allow-list. Do not conclude that the suffix is blocked solely because one organization has a local policy against unfamiliar TLDs.
Compatibility: what can actually break?
DNS software does not need a special web protocol for .ai. Failures usually occur in an application layer or an organization’s policy layer.
Application and SaaS allow-lists
Some services require you to pre-register domains for callbacks, webhooks, CORS, SAML metadata, passwordless-login links or API access. Enter the complete .ai hostname wherever the service asks for an origin or redirect URI. A rule written only for an old .com hostname will not match the new name.
Corporate filters and security tools
Companies may classify TLDs in URL filters, threat-intelligence feeds or outbound email controls. The sources do not establish that every filter treats .ai and .com identically. Ask the relevant administrator to test the exact hostname over HTTPS and SMTP, and document an exception if policy blocks legitimate traffic.
Legacy validation code
Old form validators sometimes assume a short, fixed list of suffixes or enforce an arbitrary minimum length. Replace such rules with standards-based hostname validation or a maintained public suffix list. Test internationalized input, subdomains and trailing dots if your application accepts them.
Certificate and cookie scope
Cookies are scoped by registrable domain. A cookie for example.ai cannot be shared with an unrelated example.com site, and a migration must account for secure, HttpOnly, SameSite and domain attributes. Update certificate inventories, monitoring probes and hard-coded hostnames during the same change window.

Ownership lookup, WHOIS, RDAP and privacy
The .AI FAQ directs registrants to WHOIS and confirms RDAP support. RDAP is a structured, HTTPS-based protocol for registration data. ICANN describes RDAP as the standardized successor to WHOIS and records a continuing WHOIS exception for .com. From 2025-01-28, gTLD registries and registrars generally no longer need to provide WHOIS, except for .com, .name and .post.

Consequently, lookup results can look different even when both domains are registered correctly. Fields may be redacted, displayed through a registrar portal or returned in different formats. Query the registry or registrar’s RDAP endpoint when you need authoritative status, nameservers, expiration dates or transfer locks; do not assume a blank public field means that no registrant information exists.
The .AI FAQ says privacy and proxy services are permitted. Whether they are included, how much they cost and which contact fields are masked depends on the registrar and applicable policy. Review the registrar’s current terms before registering a domain used for a business, public project or personal site.
How many .ai domains exist?
The .AI FAQ reported 598,007 registered .ai domains as of 2025-01-02. Earlier figures on that FAQ were 572,575 on 2024-11-27, 533,068 on 2024-10-01 and 478,696 on 2024-07-01. These are dated .ai snapshots, not a like-for-like comparison with .com, and they should not be presented as a current total after the stated date. No comparable current .com registration total is established here.
Choosing the right suffix
Choose .ai when the name and positioning fit
- Your product is explicitly about artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science or automation.
- The exact .com is unavailable, unaffordable under your budget, or confusingly associated with another organization.
- Your audience will understand and remember the shorter AI-oriented brand.
- You have checked every critical vendor, corporate network and mail recipient for acceptance.
Choose .com when recognition is the overriding requirement
- You want a neutral suffix that does not imply a particular technology or industry.
- Customers, partners and offline users are likely to type the name from memory.
- Your organization expects a broad mix of products and may outgrow an AI-specific identity.
- Your compliance, procurement or support teams require the most familiar generic-web convention.
Register both when continuity justifies it
If budget and availability allow, register the primary brand in one suffix and redirect the other to it. Keep one canonical hostname for search, cookies, analytics and account links. Renew both on the same calendar, lock the secondary domain against unauthorized transfer and monitor it for expiration or DNS changes. Owning both does not automatically transfer email history, certificates or cookies; those assets must be migrated deliberately.

- Inventory dependencies: list websites, APIs, mailboxes, certificates, OAuth clients, webhooks, mobile apps, documentation and printed addresses.
- Reserve names: check the exact .ai and .com labels plus obvious misspellings and hyphenated alternatives. Confirm that the name is not infringing another party’s mark.
- Build DNS in advance: lower TTLs before the cutover, create records at the new domain and verify answers from multiple public resolvers.
- Provision certificates: include every production hostname and validate renewals before changing traffic.
- Test applications: exercise sign-in, payments, API callbacks, CORS, file uploads, password resets and mobile deep links using the new hostnames.
- Configure mail authentication: publish MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, then send test messages to several providers and inspect alignment.
- Switch traffic: change DNS or CDN routing, retain the old site, and issue permanent redirects from old URLs where appropriate.
- Monitor and retire carefully: watch logs, certificate alerts, bounce reports and support tickets for at least one full operational cycle before removing old records.
Renewal, transfers and policy checks
Prices, renewal terms, transfer rules and DNS-provider support vary by registrar and can change. Confirm the current recurring renewal price rather than relying on an introductory offer. Check the expiration grace period, redemption charges, transfer lock, authorization-code process, DNSSEC support and privacy options before committing to either suffix.
Best Value
Keep the registrant account protected with a unique password and multi-factor authentication. Record the registrar, registry status, nameservers, DS values, certificate contacts and renewal dates in an internal inventory. A technically compatible domain can still go offline if the registration expires or an incorrect DS record is published.
Common questions
Does a .ai domain require an Anguillan address?
No. WIPO says .ai registration is unrestricted. A registrar may still request identity or payment verification under its own compliance procedures.
Is .com more compatible than .ai?
.com is more familiar to people and may be pre-approved in more legacy allow-lists, but the suffix itself does not determine DNS, HTTPS or email compatibility. Verify the actual services and policies in your deployment.
Is .ai faster, safer or better for search rankings?
No evidence here establishes an automatic speed, security or SEO advantage for either suffix. Performance depends on hosting, DNS, TLS, application code and network conditions; security depends on configuration and operational controls.
Can I use DNSSEC with .ai?
Yes. IANA publishes a .ai DS record, and AWS Route 53 documents .ai registration and DNSSEC configuration. Your DNS provider must sign the child zone and publish a matching DS record at the registrar or registry.
What should I do if a service rejects my .ai hostname?
Capture the exact error, confirm the hostname’s DNS and certificate, then check the service’s current domain policy or allow-list. Ask the provider for a documented exception or use a supported hostname while you resolve the policy issue; do not change suffixes until you know which layer is failing.
