1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeptember 2026 manufacturing surveys showed expansion in several Asian economies, with semiconductor and other technology demand helping support export-oriented factories. The picture was uneven: Japan’s growth slowed, China’s official reading barely crossed the expansion threshold, and some Southeast Asian economies contracted. Meanwhile, higher energy and input costs, delivery disruption and rising selling prices remained concerns. The surveys point to an association with AI-related demand, not proof that it erased cost pressures across the region.
What the September surveys show
A Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) above 50 indicates that activity expanded compared with the previous month in the survey’s covered manufacturing sector. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. It is a survey signal, not a measure showing that every factory or industry grew.
Country readings also need to be compared carefully: publishers run different survey series, and their results are not necessarily interchangeable. The clearest regional takeaway is that expansion continued in a number of manufacturing hubs, but not uniformly.
| Economy and survey | September 2026 PMI | August comparison | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| China, official National Bureau of Statistics series | 50.1 | 49.8 | Marginal expansion after August’s contraction |
| China, private RatingDog/S&P Global series | 52.1 | 51.5 | Expansion; a separate series from the official PMI |
| South Korea, S&P Global | 53.9 | 52.3 | Faster expansion |
| Taiwan, S&P-linked series | 56.7 | 54.7 | Expansion |
| Taiwan, NDC/CIER series | 63.4 | Up 0.9 percentage point | Expansion; a separate survey from the S&P-linked series |
| Japan, S&P Global | 54.1 | 54.9 | Expansion at a slower pace |
| India, S&P Global/HSBC | 55.1 | Not stated in the cited report | Seven-month high |
China’s official production subindex was 51.7 and its new-orders subindex was 50.5 in September, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, as reported by the Associated Press. Those component readings offer more detail than the headline PMI, but they do not turn the survey into a measure of total factory output.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The two Taiwan figures describe different surveys, not competing values from one agreed series. The National Development Council and Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research report published 63.4; S&P-linked reporting gave 56.7. The figures should therefore remain separately attributed rather than merged or treated as an error.
Where technology demand fits
Reporting linked strong South Korean export orders and production to semiconductor and automotive demand. Usamah Bhatti, an economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “Both new orders and production growth hit the highest for around 5½ years, with anecdotal evidence often linking the expansions to the combined strength of the semiconductor and automotive sectors.” He also said expectations for the semiconductor sector helped lift optimism among manufacturers.

This is a plausible channel for AI-related demand: expanding demand for chips and related technology can support orders at export-oriented suppliers. But the surveys and commentary do not quantify AI’s contribution to Asian factory output or calculate how much it offset higher energy or other costs. Semiconductor demand is also only one part of the explanation offered for South Korea.
Japan remained in expansion, with a 54.1 PMI after 54.9 in August, and new export orders rose for a ninth month, according to S&P Global survey reporting by Reuters/The Straits Times. The slower headline pace and the longer run of rising export orders are different signals: one describes the rate of overall improvement, the other the duration of export-order growth.

Growth was uneven across the region
September S&P Global survey reporting showed Indonesia and Vietnam expanding, while Malaysia and the Philippines contracted. Thailand’s PMI reached a nine-month high. The regional pattern is therefore not a single manufacturing boom: conditions varied by country, even as technology-linked demand helped some export producers.
Separate trade data should not be confused with PMI readings. South Korea’s exports rose 83.5% year over year in August 2026, according to official export data reported by Reuters. That is an August comparison against the same month a year earlier—not a September PMI component or a month-to-month measure.

Why costs still matter
Survey coverage described elevated energy and input prices, delivery disruption, and manufacturers raising selling prices in Japan and Taiwan. These pressures can squeeze margins if factories cannot pass higher costs on to buyers; raising prices may protect margins but can also make products less competitive or dampen demand.
The evidence does not establish that all Asian manufacturers faced the same cost changes, nor does it provide a region-wide net calculation of AI-driven demand against those costs. Expansion and cost strain can coexist: a factory may receive more orders while paying more for energy, components or transport.

How to read the headline numbers
- Use the publisher and survey name with each country figure, especially for China and Taiwan, where separate series differ.
- Read a PMI above 50 as expansion in the surveyed activity, not proof that every manufacturer grew or that output rose by the same percentage as the index.
- Keep headline PMI, production and orders subindexes, export-order trends, and year-over-year trade data distinct; they measure different things.
- Treat AI as a reported demand driver and analyst interpretation, not as a measured cause that has been shown to cancel out costs.
