AI Data Center E-Waste: Is It Huge, and Is It Growing? What the Numbers Show

AI infrastructure does add to a hardware-retirement problem, but the most AI-specific figure available is a modeled scenario, not a measured count of waste from data centers. A 2024 study in Nature Computational Science estimates that generative-AI-related (GAI) e-waste could accumulate to 1.2–5.0 million tonnes over 2020–2030 under its alternative development scenarios. The “getting bigger” part is supported by modeled trajectories and by a broader global trend in all electronic waste. It is not established as a measured, data-center-only total.

How big is the AI-specific number?

The most direct AI estimate comes from Peng Wang and colleagues, “E-waste challenges of generative artificial intelligence,” Nature Computational Science 4, 818–823, published 28 October 2024. It uses a computational power-driven material-flow analysis with a particular focus on large language models. Its outputs are scenario ranges, so each number needs its period, scope and type attached.

Figure What it describes Scope and period Type of number Source
1.2–5.0 million tonnes Cumulative GAI-related e-waste 2020–2030, across different future GAI development settings, with a focus on large language models Modeled scenario range; not observed waste and not limited to data centers Wang et al., Nature Computational Science, 2024
16–86% Potential reduction in GAI e-waste generation from circular-economy strategies Across the value chain; depends on which strategies and scenarios are assumed Modeled potential; not a reduction already achieved Wang et al., Nature Computational Science, 2024
62 billion kg Global e-waste generated 2022, all e-waste categories worldwide Global all-category baseline; not an AI hardware measure ITU and UNITAR, Global E-waste Monitor 2024
22.3% Share of e-waste documented as formally collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner Global, 2022 Documented share; it does not mean the rest was all dumped ITU and UNITAR, Global E-waste Monitor 2024
82 billion kg Projected global e-waste generation under the monitor’s business-as-usual scenario 2030, global Projection, not an observed 2030 outcome ITU and UNITAR, Global E-waste Monitor 2024
20% Projected documented formal collection and recycling under the same business-as-usual scenario 2030, global Projection, not an observed 2030 outcome ITU and UNITAR, Global E-waste Monitor 2024

The 62-billion-kg figure and the 1.2–5.0-million-tonne estimate cannot be compared directly or added together. One covers every category of electronics in a single year; the other models only generative-AI-related equipment across a decade, in scenarios that differ from one another. The global figure gives scale to the problem. It does not measure the AI share.

Why the AI estimate is a range

The 1.2–5.0-million-tonne span reflects different assumptions about how AI development proceeds, rather than a single measured trend. The authors use it to show that the outcome depends heavily on choices about hardware and policy. Readers should treat the low and high ends as bounds on plausible scenarios, not as forecasts that a particular data center or company will produce a particular amount.

What could push the modeled figure higher

The Nature Computational Science authors name two possible intensifiers. Neither is presented as the only driver of modeled growth.

Rapid server turnover for operating cost savings

If operators replace servers quickly to reduce operating costs, more functioning hardware leaves service sooner than it otherwise would. This is the link between AI economics and e-waste that the study highlights. The source does not quantify how common fast replacement cycles are across the industry, so the effect should be read as a mechanism, not a measured rate.

Geopolitical restrictions on semiconductor imports

Import restrictions on semiconductors can change where hardware is produced, repaired and recycled, and how long equipment stays in use in a given region. The study flags this as a possible intensifier. The cited material does not establish a specific national effect, so this factor is best understood as a risk to be monitored rather than a quantified contribution.

Why the collection gap matters for AI hardware

Even if the AI figures were accurate, the amount that ends up in documented recycling depends on the wider system. The Global E-waste Monitor reports that 22.3% of 2022 e-waste was documented as formally collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner, and its business-as-usual scenario projects 20% by 2030. Those are global shares, not AI-specific ones.

  • EASY TO CLEAN: Texture and design prevent liquid and debris build up for easy cleaning

UNITAR’s launch announcement, “Electronic Waste Rising Five Times Faster than Documented E-waste Recycling” (20 March 2024), attributes several causes of the gap to global conditions: limited repair options, shorter product life cycles, design shortcomings and inadequate e-waste infrastructure. The announcement does not say that each factor is specific to AI data centers. Nikhil Seth, Executive Director of UNITAR, is quoted in the same announcement: “Amidst the hopeful embrace of solar panels and electronic equipment to combat the climate crisis and drive digital progress, the surge in e-waste requires urgent attention.”

What happens to old AI servers and GPUs?

The cited sources do not document the specific disposal routes for retired AI servers or GPUs, such as resale, refurbishment, component harvesting or recycling rates for those products. Anyone who needs that detail should look for operator disclosures or case-specific reporting, which were not part of the evidence reviewed here.

What the sources do support is the general pathway: equipment that leaves service enters a global system where documented collection and recycling are a minority share. The study’s circular-economy scenarios are the modeled alternative to that pathway. They are described in the next section.

Can AI hardware be reused or recycled?

The Nature Computational Science study models circular-economy strategies across the value chain and estimates that they could reduce GAI e-waste generation by 16–86%. The range depends on the strategies and scenarios chosen. It is a modeled potential, not a demonstrated result from deployed programs.

  • DURABLE: Commercial grade construction to withstand years of indoor and outdoor use

The cited material does not compare individual interventions for AI data centers, so it cannot say which tactic works best. When evaluating any reuse, repair or recycling approach, these axes help separate what is known from what is assumed:

  • Scope of recovery: does the approach extend the life of whole servers, or recover components and materials?
  • Point in the lifecycle: does it act on design, repair, reuse, collection, or end-of-life processing?
  • Evidence type: is the outcome a measured deployment result or a modeled potential?
  • System boundary and geography: which hardware, which region and which period does the claim cover?
  • Traceability: are outcomes documented in a way that can be checked later?

Why AI’s footprint is more than e-waste

The UN Environment Programme’s September 2024 issue note, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) end-to-end: The Environmental Impact of the Full AI Lifecycle Needs to be Comprehensively Assessed”, places infrastructure production inside the AI lifecycle. It identifies energy use, water, mineral consumption, emissions and electronic waste as direct impacts. It also points to measurement challenges and the need for better metrics and reporting.

E-waste is therefore one component of AI’s environmental cost. A claim about one component should say which other components it leaves out.

How to read AI e-waste claims

  1. Check whether the number is measured or modeled. The headline AI figure is modeled.
  2. Check the period. The AI range covers 2020–2030; the global monitor figures are for 2022 and 2030 projections.
  3. Check the scope. A global all-category total is not an AI hardware total, and a generative-AI estimate is not a data-center-only total.
  4. Check the boundary. Some claims cover only disposal, while the UNEP framing covers the full lifecycle.
  5. Check the date. The sources cited here are from 2024. Newer editions of these reports may have updated the figures, so confirm the current version before reusing a number.

Read this way, the headline is defensible in direction but not in precision. AI-related hardware is one contributor to a growing global e-waste stream, and the modeled estimates show that choices about turnover, policy and recovery will largely determine how large it becomes.
