For most small businesses, updated antivirus is still a sensible baseline—not a complete security program. AI-enabled cybersecurity tools may offer useful features, but the official guidance cited here does not establish that AI endpoint products outperform traditional antivirus. Choose tools by what they do, how alerts are handled, and whether they fit your business’s risks and capacity—not by an “AI-powered” label.

What is the difference between AI cybersecurity tools and traditional antivirus?

Traditional antivirus software is an endpoint safeguard: it helps protect the computers and other devices where it is installed. AI-enabled cybersecurity is not one single product category. A vendor may use AI for detection, alert analysis, or other functions, but the label alone does not tell you which capability is included or how well it works.

The practical decision is therefore not simply “AI or antivirus.” It is whether a product protects the devices and systems you use, keeps its protections current, and gives someone the ability to act on warnings. NIST recommends that small businesses install and maintain updated antivirus software; its Small Business Quick-Start Guide also identifies antivirus and anti-malware on business devices as priorities. NIST’s cybersecurity basics and its SP 1300 guide make antivirus part of a broader approach to risk management.

Is AI cybersecurity better than antivirus?

There is no basis in the official sources cited here for a general claim that AI endpoint products outperform traditional antivirus. They do not provide a current head-to-head efficacy statistic, endorse a vendor, or show that one product suits every small business. That means AI should be assessed as a specific feature of a product, not treated as proof of better protection or a reason to drop antivirus.

NIST’s AI-related quick-start guide is about using AI to analyze, plan, implement, and monitor Cybersecurity Framework outcomes. It is an initial public draft, not a comparative product test. NIST lists the draft and its scope on the CSF 2.0 Quick-Start Guides page.

What cybersecurity does a small business need beyond antivirus?

Antivirus addresses only part of the risk. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 organizes cybersecurity risk management into six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. For a small business, this means considering not only prevention tools but also what information and services matter, who can access them, how problems are noticed, and how operations can be restored.

  • Detect: Decide how suspicious activity and security alerts will be noticed and who will review them.
  • Respond and recover: Prepare and test incident, recovery, and continuity plans. Maintain backups that are protected and tested.
  • Govern: Assign responsibility for security decisions and make sure safeguards match the business’s risks and obligations.

The FTC’s Cybersecurity for Small Business guidance covers practical measures including access restrictions, staff training, email protections, backup planning, and incident response. NIST’s Cybersecurity Basics also recommends MFA, strong unique passwords, backups, antivirus, patching, and training.

How should a small business compare cybersecurity products?

Compare products against the business’s devices, risks, and capacity to respond. These are buyer questions, not a ranking of AI and traditional antivirus performance.

  • PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
  • SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few clicks, and your info stays protected on public Wi-Fi every time you connect.
  • PERSONAL DATA SCANS – Take your info off the market. We’ll find your personal information on sites selling it, then guide you on how to remove it.
  • SOCIAL PRIVACY MANAGER – Decide what you share. McAfee finds the privacy settings buried in your social accounts and fixes them.
  • Coverage: Does the product support every business device and operating system you need to protect?
  • Maintenance and management: Does it update automatically, and can you administer protections centrally if you manage multiple devices?
  • Alerts and response: What does the product detect or report, and who is responsible for reviewing alerts and taking action?
  • Operational fit: Can the owner or staff manage it reliably, or does it require IT support the business does not have?
  • Compatibility with other safeguards: Does it fit alongside MFA, patching, backups, staff training, and access controls?
  • Total cost: What will the business pay for the protection and administration it actually needs?

If a vendor promotes AI, ask what task AI performs in that product and what evidence the vendor provides for the relevant capability. Do not assume that the label guarantees prevention, better detection, or fewer alerts.

A practical small-business security baseline

  1. List what you rely on. Inventory business devices, software, data, and services; identify risks and any contractual or regulatory obligations.
  2. Protect and maintain devices. Install updated antivirus or anti-malware on business devices, and patch operating systems and applications.
  3. Secure sign-ins. Require MFA, especially phishing-resistant MFA where available. Use unique, strong passwords; a password manager can help manage them.
  4. Make recoverable backups. Back up business data regularly, protect the copies from unauthorized access or malware, and test that you can restore them. Consider keeping a copy disconnected from the network. An external hard drive can be one backup medium, but it is not a complete backup plan on its own.
  5. Limit access and prepare people. Give staff access only to the information they need, provide security training, and prepare and test response, recovery, and continuity plans.
  6. Protect company email domains. If you use company-domain email, work with your email provider to configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC to reduce spoofing.
  7. Assign alert responsibility. Decide who checks product alerts and what to do when something looks suspicious; buying a tool does not by itself ensure that warnings are acted on.

FTC guidance discusses backup protection, email authentication, training, and response planning in its small-business cybersecurity resource. For baseline device and account safeguards, see NIST’s Cybersecurity Basics.

What the small-business context means

The U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy reported 34.8 million small businesses in the United States and that 81.9% had no paid employees other than the owners; NIST attributes these figures to the SBA in its April 14, 2026 initial public draft, Small Business Cybersecurity: Non-Employer Firms. These figures describe the scale and staffing context, not the effectiveness of any cybersecurity product. For a business without dedicated IT staff, straightforward administration and a clear plan for handling alerts are especially important selection considerations.
