Use autocomplete for small, predictable edits you already understand. Use a chat assistant when you need an explanation or a focused proposal. Use an IDE agent when a bounded task requires coordinated file changes, commands, or tests; delegate to an asynchronous coding agent only when the work can wait for review. These are modes, not mutually exclusive product categories: one assistant may provide inline completion, chat, synchronous agent behavior, and asynchronous repository work.
The important choice is therefore not simply which brand has the best model. It is how much scope, context, tool access, delegation, and verification your task warrants. Every suggestion remains a proposal, and every agent-produced change still needs human review and project checks.

The short answer: match the mode to the task
| Situation | Best starting point | Why | What you still do |
|---|---|---|---|
| You know the change and it is local | Inline autocomplete | Fast completion of a line, expression, boilerplate block, or familiar pattern | Read the suggestion in context and accept, edit, or reject it |
| You need an explanation, alternative, or small code proposal | Chat assistant | Lets you state intent and constraints without handing over broad repository control | Check assumptions, adapt the proposal, and run relevant checks |
| The task spans files or requires an inspect-edit-test loop | Synchronous IDE agent | Can inspect a codebase, plan steps, edit files, run tools, and iterate while you watch | Approve scope, monitor tool calls, inspect the diff, and validate behavior |
| The work is separable and can be reviewed later | Asynchronous coding agent | Moves repository work into a delegated queue while you continue elsewhere | Define acceptance criteria, review the resulting branch or pull request, and run checks before merging |
When uncertain, start with the least autonomous mode that can complete the task. Escalate from completion to chat, then to an IDE agent, only when the smaller mode would create more manual coordination than it saves.

Autocomplete, also called inline completion, predicts text at the cursor. The editor supplies nearby code and other available context; the system proposes a continuation that you can accept, partially accept, replace, or ignore. GitHub’s documentation describes Copilot completions in these terms: suggestions are based on code around the cursor and relevant editor context.

This model is intentionally narrow. It does not need to own a plan for the whole repository, decide which files to modify, or execute a test suite. Its value comes from reducing typing and preserving your flow when the intended code is already clear.
Good autocomplete tasks
- Completing a familiar function after you have written its signature and nearby comments.
- Filling repetitive mappings, serializers, getters, or test cases that follow an established local pattern.
- Writing a short regular expression, SQL fragment, API call, or configuration stanza when you know the required shape.
- Moving through repetitive edits where each suggestion can be checked immediately.
When autocomplete is a poor fit
- The requirement is ambiguous and you need questions or trade-off analysis before writing code.
- The change depends on contracts, types, or conventions spread across several files.
- You need to discover an unfamiliar code path, update call sites, modify configuration, and run tests as one task.
- The generated continuation looks plausible but you cannot explain why it is correct.
Autocomplete can still offer a useful first draft in those cases, but accepting a long sequence of locally plausible completions can hide a wrong global assumption. Switching modes is safer than forcing inline prediction to perform repository-level reasoning.
What an AI coding assistant adds
An AI coding assistant is a broader workflow category. It may include inline completion, conversational chat, code explanation, multi-file editing, review support, and agentic execution. The categories overlap: completion is one capability inside some assistants, not a competing product class.

Chat is useful when you can describe the question more easily than you can encode it in a cursor position. Ask for an explanation of an unfamiliar function, a comparison of two implementation strategies, a focused refactor proposal, or a test outline. Keep the request bounded: name the relevant files or pasted excerpt, state constraints, and ask the assistant to identify assumptions.
A chat answer is a proposal, not an authority. It may omit a dependency, misunderstand a framework version, or suggest an API that is unavailable in your project. Treat the response as design input, then verify it against the repository and official documentation you use for the project.
Synchronous IDE agents: an observable work loop
An IDE agent can perform a multi-step task while you remain in the editor. GitHub describes its agent mode as "an autonomous and agentic real-time, synchronous collaborator that performs multi-step coding tasks based on natural-language prompts." In practical terms, the agent can inspect a codebase, form a plan, read and edit files, run commands or tests, examine their output, and refine the changes in the same session.

Visual Studio Code’s technical description explains the harness behind this behavior: the system assembles context, exposes tools such as file reading, editing, terminal execution, and semantic search, executes requested tools, feeds results back to the model, and applies limits and cancellation controls. A single user turn can therefore trigger many rounds as the model searches files, reads code, edits files, runs tests, reads output, and iterates on failures.
This mode earns consideration when the task is bounded and you want to observe progress. It is not a license to give an agent an unrestricted objective such as "improve the whole application." Define the files, behavior, tests, and stop conditions before allowing execution.
Asynchronous coding agents: delegation with delayed review
An asynchronous coding agent handles repository work away from your active editing session. The distinction is about timing and delegation: you submit a separable task, the agent works through its queue, and you inspect the result later. This can be useful for a well-specified issue, a mechanical migration, or a test addition that does not require constant design decisions.
Delayed review changes the risk profile. You need a precise task description, an explicit definition of done, and a review point such as a branch or pull request. If the task depends on decisions you expect to make interactively, use a synchronous agent or chat instead.
A decision framework for choosing the right mode
Evaluate the task along five dimensions before you invoke an assistant.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Scope: Is the change confined to one location, or does it cross files, modules, configuration, and tests?
- Uncertainty: Do you know the implementation, or do you first need explanation, discovery, or design alternatives?
- Tool need: Must the system search the repository, edit several files, run commands, or inspect test output?
- Supervision: Do you need to see each action immediately, or can the work wait for a later review?
- Verification: Can you state which tests, linters, type checks, security checks, or manual scenarios will determine acceptance?
| Task profile | Recommended mode | Set these boundaries |
|---|---|---|
| Known, local, low-risk edit | Completion | Language, style, surrounding pattern, and the exact change you intend |
| Unknown API or design question | Chat | Relevant context, framework version, constraints, and the decision you need to make |
| Bounded multi-file implementation | Synchronous IDE agent | Allowed paths, required behavior, commands it may run, and a stop condition |
| Independent issue suitable for later review | Asynchronous agent | Acceptance criteria, branch or pull-request expectations, and required checks |
Escalation should be deliberate. If a completion is repeatedly wrong because it lacks repository context, ask a focused chat question. If chat produces a plan but coordinating every file yourself is tedious, use an observable IDE agent. If you can fully specify the issue and do not need live decisions, asynchronous delegation may be appropriate.

How to use each mode safely
Inline completion workflow
- Write the function signature, types, comments, or test name that expresses your intent.
- Inspect the proposed completion before accepting it; check error handling, data validation, naming, and local conventions.
- Accept only the portion you understand. Edit or reject the rest rather than accepting a large block on appearance alone.
- Run the narrowest relevant test or static check immediately, then continue to broader checks when the change is complete.
Short feedback cycles are the main control. A suggestion that fails a type check or a focused test is cheap to replace; a dozen unverified completions intertwined across a feature are not.
Chat workflow
- State the objective, inputs and outputs, framework or language version, and constraints such as backward compatibility or performance.
- Provide only the relevant code or identify the files the assistant can legitimately inspect. Ask it to list assumptions before proposing code.
- Request one or two alternatives when the trade-off matters, and ask what could make each alternative fail.
- Apply the proposal yourself or in a controlled edit, then run project checks and compare the diff with the original requirement.
Ask for tests alongside implementation when the behavior is testable. A generated test can encode the same misunderstanding as generated production code, so inspect its assertions rather than treating test presence as proof.
Synchronous IDE-agent workflow
- Write a bounded prompt: name the feature or defect, allowed areas, expected behavior, and checks that must pass.
- Ask the agent to inspect and propose a plan before editing. Confirm that the plan includes the right files and does not expand scope.
- Permit only the tools needed for the task. Watch file reads, edits, terminal commands, and any dependency or configuration changes.
- Let the agent run focused checks, but stop it when output shows an unrelated failure, an unexpected file change, or a loop without new evidence.
- Review the complete diff manually. Compare behavior with requirements, inspect error paths and security-sensitive code, and run the project’s normal validation outside the agent session if practical.
Tool-call limits and cancellation hooks constrain execution; they do not certify that the plan was correct or that the tests cover the right behavior.
Asynchronous-agent workflow
- Convert the issue into acceptance criteria that another developer could verify without asking you follow-up questions.
- Specify the repository area, files that must not change, compatibility requirements, and the exact test or check commands.
- Require a reviewable artifact such as a branch, commit, or pull request with a summary of changes and tests run.
- Review the artifact as if it came from a teammate: inspect the diff, reproduce important checks, look for accidental scope expansion, and verify edge cases.
- Merge only after the result satisfies the original criteria and your project’s normal review policy.
Context and integration matter more than the label
Two tools described as assistants can behave very differently because of the context they can retrieve and the systems they connect to. Compare these capabilities rather than relying on model branding.
- Editor and language fit: Check whether your IDE, languages, frameworks, generated files, and build system are supported. GitHub says its Copilot suggestions work especially well with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby, Go, C#, and C++; it also discusses database queries, APIs and frameworks, and infrastructure as code. That is a vendor statement about its own product, not an independent benchmark.
- Repository awareness: Determine whether the tool can search symbols, read related files, understand project instructions, and respect ignored or restricted paths.
- Issue and pull-request integration: For delegated work, establish how tasks are created, where changes appear, and which review controls remain in your normal workflow.
- Context boundaries: Know whether prompts or retrieved code can include secrets, customer data, proprietary algorithms, or files excluded by policy.
- Action visibility: Prefer interfaces that show the plan, files changed, commands run, and test output in a form you can audit.
A completion that has excellent local predictions may still be the right choice for a project where agent access is restricted. Conversely, a capable agent may be unsuitable if it cannot access the build system or if your team cannot review its actions.
Control, verification, and failure modes
Common failure modes
- Confidently wrong code: The output compiles but violates a business rule, authorization boundary, or edge-case requirement.
- Stale or invented APIs: The assistant uses a version, method, or option that is absent from your dependency set.
- Incomplete repository changes: One call site is updated while another implementation, migration, fixture, or documentation remains inconsistent.
- Tests that prove little: A generated test exercises the happy path but misses failure handling, concurrency, permissions, or data integrity.
- Scope drift: An agent reformats unrelated files, changes dependencies, or edits configuration while pursuing the original task.
- Execution loops: Repeated command failures lead to more edits without a new diagnosis.
Controls that reduce risk
- Use least-privilege repository and terminal access, especially for agents.
- Keep changes in a branch or isolated workspace until review is complete.
- Require small, inspectable commits or checkpoints for larger tasks.
- Set command, time, file, and iteration limits where the tool supports them.
- Stop execution when the agent reaches an unrelated error or begins changing scope.
- Run independent checks: tests, type checking, linting, dependency audits, security scanning, and manual scenarios appropriate to the feature.
Passing tests is evidence, not a correctness guarantee. The agent may have selected incomplete tests, and the suite may not encode the requirement you care about. Human acceptance remains the final decision.

Governance, privacy, and intellectual property
For a team, the purchasing or deployment decision is not only about completion quality. Establish who may use which mode, what code may be sent for processing, how prompts and outputs are retained, and how licenses or attribution are handled. Review the provider’s current enterprise, privacy, and intellectual-property terms for your region and plan; those terms change and cannot be inferred from a model’s technical capability.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Define a policy for secrets and regulated data before enabling repository-wide context. A useful policy names prohibited inputs, approved repositories, human review requirements, logging and retention expectations, and an escalation path for suspected license or security problems. Individual developers should know how to report an output that appears copied, exposes a secret, or introduces an unapproved dependency.
Costs, quotas, and changing limits
Do not compare tools on a single advertised price. Completion volume, chat requests, agent credits, model choice, token consumption, team seats, and overage rules can all differ. Limits may also vary by region, plan, model, or date.
As one time-bound example, GitHub’s product page stated on October 13, 2026 that its Free offering included 2,000 code completions per month and a limited monthly allowance of GitHub AI Credits for chat and agent features. The same page noted that usage varies by model and tokens processed. Treat those figures as volatile product information, not a baseline for every assistant; verify the current plan immediately before adopting it.
For budgeting, measure your own workload: how many developers need completion, how often agents run repository searches and tests, which models are permitted, and what review time is added. A cheaper plan can cost more overall if limited context causes rework; a higher allowance can be wasteful if your policy permits only narrow completion.

A 2026 preprint titled Comparing AI Coding Agents: A Task-Stratified Analysis of Pull Request Acceptance reported 7,156 pull requests across five agents. For OpenAI Codex, the authors reported acceptance rates from 59.6% to 88.6% across nine task categories. Other agents led in some categories. These are dataset-specific pull-request acceptance figures, not a universal ranking, a controlled assessment of every feature, or a forecast of an individual developer’s productivity.
The study does not remove the need for the workflow distinction. Completion, chat, synchronous agents, and asynchronous agents place different demands on supervision and verification, even when they are offered by the same product.
Practical scenarios
Adding a field to a familiar data model
If you know the model, serializer, and test pattern, completion can draft the repetitive lines. Accept the suggestion in small pieces, update the focused test, and run the type checker. Escalate to chat only if the field’s validation or compatibility behavior is unclear.
Diagnosing a failing integration test
Start with chat or an agent in read-only or planning mode. Provide the failure, relevant logs, and the expected behavior. Ask for hypotheses and the files that would confirm each one. Once the cause is bounded, an IDE agent can make the coordinated fix and run the targeted test while you watch.
Implementing a cross-cutting migration
A migration that touches schemas, application code, fixtures, and deployment configuration is a candidate for a synchronous agent when you can constrain paths and checks. For a repetitive, well-specified batch that can be reviewed later, an asynchronous agent may be suitable. In both cases, require a complete diff and migration rollback or recovery plan where applicable.
Exploring an unfamiliar codebase
Use chat to build a mental model or ask an agent to map relevant files without editing. Do not grant broad write access merely because discovery is difficult. Understanding the architecture first usually produces a smaller, safer implementation request.
A team rollout checklist
- Classify tasks into completion, chat, synchronous-agent, and asynchronous-agent categories.
- Document approved editors, languages, repositories, models, and data handling rules.
- Define mandatory human review for generated code and required checks before merge.
- Configure least-privilege access, cancellation, command limits, and isolated branches where available.
- Record agent actions and test results sufficiently for another developer to audit the change.
- Review quota, pricing, model availability, and policy terms regularly because they are volatile.
- Evaluate outcomes with your own measures, such as review rework, escaped defects, cycle time, and developer effort, rather than assuming a vendor or study figure transfers to your team.
Bottom line
Autocomplete is enough when your intent is clear and the edit is local. Chat is the right step for explanation and focused design help. An IDE agent is justified by a bounded multi-step task that benefits from repository tools and an observable loop. An asynchronous agent is a delegation mechanism for separable work, not a replacement for acceptance review. Choose the narrowest mode that handles the task, expand access only when the work demands it, and judge the result by your project’s requirements and checks—not by the fluency of the generated code.
