Code completion suggests code as you write; an AI coding agent takes on a broader task, investigates project context, makes changes, and may run tools such as commands or tests. The practical difference is how much work you delegate and how the workflow is controlled—not a strict boundary between products. Some development environments offer both, alongside focused editing and planning modes.
How code completion works
Completion is suggestion-led. As you type, an editor can offer a line or block of code based on the current editing context. You decide whether to accept, reject, or adapt that suggestion, then continue working directly in the editor. For example, Visual Studio Code describes inline suggestions as code suggestions shown while you type: Build with AI in VS Code.
Completion can suggest more than a single word or line, so line count alone does not define it. The key is that it proposes code within your writing flow rather than taking responsibility for a larger, multi-step task.
How an AI coding agent works
An agent is task-led. You give it a goal—such as fixing a failing test—and, depending on the product and settings, it can locate relevant files, inspect project context and error output, edit code, run commands or tests, review the results, and iterate. GitHub describes IDE agent mode as taking a high-level task, choosing files, making changes, and running commands in an interactive workflow where you can inspect and steer the work: Using agent mode in your IDE.

For example, you might ask an IDE agent to investigate a failing test. It could examine the test and related implementation, make a change, run the test, and use the output to decide what to do next. This illustrates the documented agent workflow; it is not a guarantee that every agent will find the right cause or run tests in every setup. Compare the workflow, not the product label
“Completion” and “agent” describe different ways of working, not necessarily separate products. An IDE may offer suggestions while typing, focused edits, chat, a planning step, and an agent mode. Check what the selected mode can actually access and do.

These are practical tendencies, not hard limits. An agent can make one focused edit, and completion can propose several lines. The useful question is how much investigation and action you want the system to perform before you review the result. Which should you use?
Use completion for a small, local change
Choose a suggestion-led workflow when you know what you are writing and want help filling in code without handing off the task. It keeps the decision point close to the change: you inspect the proposed code and decide what to keep.

Use focused editing for a contained change
If you know the intended change but want help applying it to a selected piece of code, a focused edit can sit between inline completion and agent mode. The exact capabilities depend on the editor.
Use an agent when the task requires investigation and several steps
An agent is a better fit when the request is clear enough to delegate but broad enough to require finding relevant files, changing code, and responding to tool output. For work where the approach matters, a planning mode may let you review the proposed steps before edits begin.

Review and permissions matter
Delegated action changes the review process. Inspect what the agent changed, check whether its commands and test results support the proposed fix, and steer or undo work that is wrong. An agent can make mistakes or go off track; VS Code’s announcement describes visible tool calls and undo as part of the workflow: Introducing GitHub Copilot agent mode (preview).
Do not assume every command will always require a fresh approval. GitHub documents command approval as a default behavior while noting that administrators or editor settings can allow automatic execution. Review controls and tool access therefore depend on the product and configuration: Using agent mode in your IDE.

Agent features vary by product and setup
“Agent” does not guarantee the same access or behavior in every editor. GitHub’s current IDE agent-mode documentation lists Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse; availability can also depend on product and organization settings. Check the documentation for the specific environment and mode you use: Using agent mode in your IDE.
Also distinguish an IDE agent from an asynchronous cloud coding agent. GitHub characterizes IDE agent mode as synchronous work in the editor, while its cloud coding agent handles issue-oriented work asynchronously and returns a pull request. That is a distinction between two agent workflows, not between agents and completion: The difference between coding agent and agent mode in GitHub Copilot.
