The clearest examples show why the distinction matters: ChatGPT Temporary Chats are omitted from history and memory and are not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI may retain them for up to 30 days for safety. Claude Incognito excludes chats from model improvement, while safety-flagged conversations can still be analyzed. Character.AI’s adult verification preserves chat access, not unrestricted content, and Replika’s 18-plus privacy policy allows third-party language-model processing to generate replies.

What “private” means in an AI chatbot
In a conventional messenger, “private” often means that other users cannot read a conversation. In an AI service, the provider’s systems must receive your messages to generate a reply, so privacy is a set of separate data-handling decisions rather than a single switch.

ChatGPT: two controls that people often confuse
Temporary Chat changes history, memory and improvement use together
Temporary Chat is the most comprehensive privacy-oriented option documented here. A temporary conversation does not appear in your chat history, does not create or update memories, and is not used for model improvement while it remains temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. That exception means “not in history” is not the same as “immediately erased.”
If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat. From that point, the ordinary account settings governing history, memory and model-improvement use apply. Do not use the save action as a way to preserve the temporary treatment.
Turning off model improvement is a narrower choice
The account-level Improve the model for everyone control addresses whether new conversations may be used to improve models. It does not delete saved chats and does not remove them from your history. This is useful when you want a searchable record but do not want future conversations used for improvement under that setting.
How to choose the setting
- For a one-off sensitive conversation: start a new Temporary Chat before typing the message. Confirm that the interface labels the conversation as temporary.
- For ongoing chats you want to keep: open your profile menu, choose Settings, then Data Controls, and review Improve the model for everyone. Labels and available controls can differ between personal accounts and managed workspaces.
- Before sharing a transcript: check whether the chat is temporary or regular. Exporting, sharing or saving it creates another copy outside the temporary workflow.
- Afterward: delete regular chats you no longer need and inspect memory controls separately; deletion and model-improvement settings solve different problems.
None of these choices should be read as permission to enter someone else’s personal data, confidential business information or identifying details. A provider still has to process the text to answer you.
Claude: Incognito limits improvement use, not safety processing
What Incognito establishes
Anthropic’s consumer privacy-center documentation says Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if the account’s Model Improvement setting is enabled. That is a clear use limitation: the conversation is excluded from a particular improvement pathway.

The safety-review exception
The same documentation says conversations flagged for safety may still be used or analyzed to improve trust-and-safety systems, including training for safety teams’ models. A flagged conversation could therefore receive additional automated or human attention despite the Incognito label.
The practical question is not “Can anyone see this?” but “Which processing purposes remain allowed if a safety system flags it?” Keep that distinction in mind when discussing self-harm, exploitation, threats, illegal activity or attempts to evade safeguards.
Questions to ask before using Incognito
- Does the current account interface identify the chat as Incognito before you send a message?
- What does the current privacy-center wording say about retention, deletion and legal requests?
- Are you using a consumer account or an organization-managed plan with different terms?
- Would the conversation still be acceptable if it were reviewed for a safety investigation?
Character.AI: age assurance is not an unrestricted adult mode
What the July 17, 2026 age-assurance page says
Character.AI states that users verified as 18 or older retain full access to chat and standard features. Users verified as under 18 are placed in a reading-only experience without chat. The company’s own wording is: “Users verified as under 18 are placed in the Under-18 experience, which includes reading mode.”
That arrangement answers an access question—whether a user can actively chat—not every privacy or content question. The age-assurance page does not establish a universal history, memory or retention rule for adult accounts.
How age may be inferred or verified
The age-assurance FAQ describes multiple signals, including login information, platform activity and some third-party signals. A selfie or identity-document step can be requested in specified circumstances. It does not say that every user must upload an ID, so do not present document upload as a universal requirement.
Persona handles age-assurance attempts, and Character.AI says it does not directly handle or store the submitted documents. That is a statement about the document-verification workflow; it does not mean the service collects no other account, activity or inference data.

Training opt-out and content boundaries
A July 1, 2026 privacy update says users can opt out of using their personal data to train and improve models. The full privacy policy and regional disclosures remain the binding sources for how that choice works, what data it covers and when it takes effect.
Character.AI’s safety documentation describes more conservative classifiers and sensitive-content limits for under-18 users than for adults. Adult verification therefore changes the applicable experience, but it is not a blanket promise that an account can generate every explicit scenario. Rules against exploitation, non-consensual sexual content, illegal acts and other harmful material can still apply.
Replika: what its 18-plus privacy policy does—and does not—prove
The surfaced Replika privacy policy defines “you” as a user at least 18 years old. It says message and content data may be processed by third-party language-model providers solely to generate conversational responses and deliver core app functionality. It also describes limited anonymized portions of messages being used for safety and performance purposes.
Those statements identify processing partners and purposes; they do not establish a current private-chat switch, an erotic mode, a particular retention duration or the boundaries of roleplay. Product descriptions and regional terms can change independently of a general privacy-policy page. Verify the feature description and applicable terms in your account before promising that a specific adult conversation mode is available.
Questions an adult user should resolve
- Which third-party providers can receive message content, and for which functions?
- How are anonymized message portions selected and protected?
- Can you delete individual conversations, the account, or both?
- Does a subscription tier change memory, retention or content filters?
Adult access, age assurance and sensitive content are three different issues
A service can require users to be 18 or older, verify age probabilistically, or provide a separate under-18 experience. None of those approaches alone tells you whether explicit sexual roleplay is permitted. Content rules may distinguish romantic discussion, sexual-health information, consensual fictional roleplay, graphic sexual description, exploitation, incest, coercion, minors and illegal acts.
Read the policy categories rather than relying on labels such as “uncensored” or “NSFW.” Look for:

- Eligibility: the minimum age and the countries where the feature is offered.
- Assurance: whether the service uses account signals, a third-party check, selfie analysis or an identity document.
- Scope: whether the rule applies to chat, image generation, voice, public posts and shared characters separately.
- Enforcement: whether warnings, reduced capabilities, account suspension or safety review can follow a violation.
- Change control: whether the provider can alter classifiers or availability by region and date.
Never treat a successful age check as consent to disclose another person’s intimate information, nor as a guarantee that a prompt will be answered.

Step 1: Record the exact mode and account type
Write down the product name, mode label, plan, country and whether the account is personal, school-managed or employer-managed. A workspace administrator may set different retention or improvement controls from a consumer account.
Step 2: Capture the six policy answers
- History: Is the chat visible in the normal list? Is there an archive separate from deletion?
- Memory: Can the assistant read saved memories in this mode? Can it create new ones?
- Improvement: Is the conversation excluded from training, evaluation or product improvement?
- Retention: How long can copies remain, including backups, abuse investigations and legal holds?
- Safety: Can automated systems or reviewers inspect flagged conversations, and for what purpose?
- Age and content: Who qualifies, how is age checked, and which sensitive categories remain blocked?
Step 3: Separate documented facts from assumptions
Use “not stated” when a policy page does not answer a question. Do not convert “not used for model improvement” into “never seen by a person,” or “adult account” into “all explicit content allowed.” Record the page title and its update date so you can notice policy changes.
Step 4: Check the control before every sensitive session
Interfaces can default back to a normal chat after an update, device change or workspace switch. Confirm the mode label, memory status and improvement setting before entering anything you would not want retained under the ordinary policy.
Step 5: Minimize what you disclose
- Use fictional names and remove addresses, phone numbers, account IDs and workplace details.
- Do not paste another person’s medical, financial, sexual or identifying information without permission.
- Avoid combining several clues that could identify a real person, even when each clue seems harmless.
- Assume that a safety flag, support ticket or legal request could create a separate review path.

Correction: verify the provider’s retention exception. ChatGPT Temporary Chat can be retained for up to 30 days for safety, despite being absent from history.

Correction: read the stated purpose and contractual role. Replika’s policy says third-party language-model providers process messages to generate responses and support core functionality; that is more specific than a general claim that data is “shared everywhere.”

- Confirm age and regional eligibility. Do not bypass an age gate or use another person’s account.
- Choose the narrowest privacy mode. For ChatGPT, that means Temporary Chat when you do not need history; for Claude, Incognito when you want exclusion from model improvement.
- Disable or review memory. A history setting does not automatically govern saved memories.
- Read the safety exception. Identify whether flagged messages can be retained, analyzed or reviewed.
- Remove identifying details. Replace real names, dates and locations with fictional substitutes.
- Check content rules first. Adult access never overrides prohibitions involving minors, exploitation, coercion or illegal conduct.
- Delete what you do not need. Deletion is a separate action from opting out of improvement use.
- Recheck after policy updates. Age-assurance rollouts, classifiers and account controls are time- and region-sensitive.
How to interpret a provider’s privacy language
Words such as “may,” “for safety,” “improve,” “anonymized” and “third-party provider” carry most of the meaning. “May retain” describes a possibility, not a guaranteed period; find the stated maximum where one exists. “Not used to improve models” narrows one purpose but says nothing by itself about abuse prevention or legal compliance. “Anonymized” should be read with the policy’s definition and re-identification safeguards, not as a promise that context is impossible to connect to an account.
Also distinguish a product help page from a privacy policy. Help pages explain a button such as Temporary Chat or Incognito. The policy and regional disclosures define broader data rights, processors, deletion exceptions and lawful requests. Use both documents when making a decision.
