Short answer: ChatGPT for Teens is the most fully documented alternative in this comparison for homework, research and creative work. OpenAI says eligible 13–17-year-olds, and accounts it estimates are under 18, are placed into a teen experience with learning tools and additional safeguards. Parents can link accounts, set quiet hours and study-hour defaults, but they cannot read or continuously monitor conversations. Meta AI remains a different kind of option: its teen-account protections include age-based content settings and, in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, manually reviewed alerts to supervising parents when a conversation appears to indicate suicide or self-harm risk.
No service should be treated as a substitute for parental judgment. Provider descriptions explain intended protections, while independent findings and a 2026 disagreement over testing show why families should evaluate purpose, privacy, escalation and actual controls separately.

What “parental controls” should mean for an AI chatbot
A teen chatbot can combine several different functions: answering questions, tutoring, generating ideas, hosting open-ended social conversation or acting as a persistent character companion. Those uses have different risk profiles. A homework assistant that encourages step-by-step learning is not equivalent to a companion designed for emotionally continuous or role-play conversation.
Before choosing a service, separate five questions that are often bundled together under the phrase “parental controls.”

- Age handling: How does the service determine that an account belongs to a minor? Is the teen experience automatic, opt-in or dependent on a parent linking an account?
- Default protections: Which subjects or outputs receive additional safeguards without a parent changing settings?
- Parent controls: Can a parent set schedules, toggle features or receive alerts? Does linking require both accounts to approve?
- Visibility and privacy: Can the parent read message history, see only safety events, or see nothing beyond settings status?
- Evidence: Are claims based on a provider’s product description, independent testing, or reporting about a disagreement between the two?
A useful choice starts with the teen’s intended activity. If the goal is schoolwork, prioritize learning support and predictable boundaries. If the goal is open-ended conversation, ask whether the service behaves like a companion and what happens when a conversation becomes emotionally intense.
ChatGPT for Teens: the most detailed documented alternative
Eligibility and automatic teen experience
OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026. The company says people who state they are 13–17, or whose account is estimated to belong to someone under 18, are placed into the teen experience. The Help Center describes eligibility as potentially relying on account information, verified age or age prediction. OpenAI says the teen experience can end when it identifies the account holder as 18 or older; a linked parental-control connection can end at the same time.
This is different from a setting that every family must remember to switch on. The teen experience is intended to apply automatically when OpenAI identifies an eligible account. Age estimation is not the same as a parent’s direct verification, so families should still discuss the account’s age information and privacy choices.

OpenAI describes the teen experience as an assistant for learning rather than a companion built around an ongoing relationship. Documented features include:
- Study Mode, which can make an eligible new chat begin in a more guided learning flow.
- Quizzes and other learning activities.
- Homework reminders.
- Study-hour scheduling and break reminders.
- Reminders before a teen uploads a sensitive image.
These features are designed to support schoolwork and healthier study routines. They do not guarantee accurate answers, appropriate judgment or a correct interpretation of a difficult personal situation. A teen still needs to check sources, question confident answers and ask a trusted adult when the subject is high stakes.
Topics covered by the stated safeguards
OpenAI says its teen protections are intended to reduce exposure to or participation in higher-risk material involving self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and explicit sexual or graphic content. Treat this as a description of intended model behavior, not independent proof that every harmful response is blocked in every conversation.
Long conversations can change context. A model may respond differently after many turns, after a user reframes a request, or when fictional role-play blends into real-life advice. Parents should explain that a refusal or warning is a safety feature, not an invitation to keep probing for a workaround.

What parents can control—and what they cannot see
Controls available after linking accounts
OpenAI says a parent or guardian may optionally link their account to a teen’s account. Linked parents can manage selected settings, including:
Rank #2
- BUILT-IN PARENTAL CONTROLS: Parents can remotely manage and monitor their kids cell phone with the Thrive Parent app that works on iOS and Android. Thrive experience offers regular software updates that provide new features and functionality.
- PARENT-APPROVED APPS and TIME LIMITS: All the fun and educational apps. Each app requires parental approval and has time restrictions. Tamper-proof controls ensure kids cannot bypass them.
- SAFE CALLING, SEARCH, BROWSING: Smart phones for kids with built-in safe online search and browsing. Protect your kids from cyberbullies, and inappropriate content. All unknown and spam calls are blocked.
- MONTHLY PLAN REQUIRED: Thrive comes bundled with Teracube Wireless service. Teracube Wireless offers affordable monthly plans for all your talk, text, and data needs. Activation is REQUIRED (Not compatible with other service providers).
- TERACUBE CARE+: Thrive comes with Teracube Care+ protection, which provides express phone replacements for defects and accidents. A protective case and glass screen protector are included with the phone.
- Quiet hours: scheduled periods intended to limit access.
- Study hours: a setting that can make eligible new chats begin in Study Mode.
- Other selected safety or feature settings: the available controls can change as the product evolves.
Because labels and eligibility can change, use the current ChatGPT settings and Help Center instructions when linking an account rather than relying on an old screenshot. Both the parent and teen should understand which account is linked and which settings the parent is changing.
Conversation privacy
OpenAI explicitly says parental controls do not let a parent read or monitor the teen’s conversations. Linking is therefore not equivalent to installing a message-surveillance system. Limited information may be shared in a safety-notification situation, but ordinary chat history is not presented to the parent as a monitoring feed.
That boundary should be part of the family agreement. A parent can set schedules and discuss safety, while the teen retains conversational privacy. If a family needs routine review of every message, this product’s documented controls do not provide that function.

- Confirm the account owner’s age information. The teen should use truthful age details so the service can apply the intended experience.
- Create or sign in to the parent’s separate account. Do not share one password as a substitute for account linking.
- Use the current parental-controls option in ChatGPT settings. Follow the on-screen linking flow for the teen and parent accounts.
- Agree on quiet hours. Choose times that fit school, sleep and family routines; do not assume a schedule replaces a device-level bedtime rule.
- Decide whether study hours are useful. Enable them if starting new chats in Study Mode supports the teen’s schoolwork, and leave them off if the family needs a different workflow.
- Explain the privacy boundary. Tell the teen exactly what the parent can configure and that ordinary conversations are not readable by the parent.
- Recheck after major product or age-status changes. If OpenAI identifies the account holder as 18 or older, the teen experience and linked connection may end.
Meta AI: broader teen-account protections and limited crisis alerts
13+ content settings and age assurance
Meta’s June 17, 2026 announcement describes 13+ content settings rolling out globally across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger Teen Accounts. Meta also describes AI-powered age assurance that uses contextual clues from profiles, posts, comments, bios and captions.
These are account and content protections around Meta’s social platforms. They should not be described as a way for a parent to read every Meta AI conversation or as a universal switch that disables every AI feature. The documented material does not establish either capability.
How the self-harm alert works
In a July 16, 2026 announcement, Meta said it would notify supervising parents when Meta AI conversations suggest that a teen may be at risk of suicide or self-harm. Meta says flagged chats are manually reviewed before an alert is sent.
At the time of that announcement, the alert function was live for Instagram-supervising parents in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. Meta said wider global availability was planned by the end of 2026. Availability is therefore both regional and time-sensitive; a family outside those countries should not assume the alert exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a narrow escalation path, not full chat monitoring. It applies to an apparent high-risk signal that reaches Meta’s review process. It does not promise that every expression of distress will be detected, that every alert will be sent immediately, or that routine conversations will be visible to parents.

Emergency-referral figure
Meta reported “over 19,000” emergency-service referrals around the world in the prior year in its July 2026 announcement. The statement does not specify a calendar year for those referrals, so the figure should be read exactly as reported rather than assigned to a particular year.

Other alternatives: what can and cannot be concluded
Common Sense Media’s 2026 evaluation discussed companion products and companion features including Character.AI, Nomi, Replika, Meta AI, ChatGPT and Google/Gemini. That list shows the range of services a parent may encounter, but the available material does not provide a complete, current, feature-by-feature account of each product’s age gates, parent settings, regional availability or escalation process.
Do not infer that every listed service has the same safeguards, or that one is the “safest” option, from the evaluation list alone. Before allowing use, check the provider’s current minimum age, whether a teen mode is automatic, whether a parent can set schedules, what data is retained, and what happens during a crisis. Companion-oriented products deserve extra scrutiny because their value proposition may involve ongoing character or relationship conversation rather than bounded homework help.
What independent evidence says about safeguards
Usage and awareness figures
Common Sense Media reported in 2026 that 72 percent of teens had used AI companions at least once, while 37 percent of parents knew their children were using AI. Those are figures from that report’s research; they should not be generalized to every country, age group or chatbot population.
Common Sense Media’s risk assessment
The organization said its testing found that safeguards can weaken during longer conversations, age gates and teen protections can be circumvented, and companion systems can produce harmful responses. Those are Common Sense Media’s claims about the products and features it evaluated. The available evidence does not establish that every product fails in the same way or at the same rate.
The October 2026 dispute over ChatGPT for Teens
The Associated Press reported on October 7, 2026, that Common Sense Media’s evaluation found some ChatGPT for Teens safeguards did not work as intended. AP also reported OpenAI’s objection that much of the testing may have begun and ended before parental-control activation was complete.
The responsible conclusion is that the findings and methodology were disputed. Provider documentation describes intended protections; independent evaluation raises questions about behavior under testing conditions; neither source alone proves how every teen account will behave in every conversation.
Choose by the teen’s actual use case
Homework, studying and research
Start with ChatGPT for Teens if the priority is guided learning, quizzes, reminders and study scheduling. Set a rule that the teen checks important facts, cites sources when schoolwork requires it and asks an adult before following medical, legal, financial or safety-sensitive advice.

Creative writing and brainstorming
A general-purpose assistant can help with outlines, drafts and idea generation. Keep personal information out of prompts, and review generated material for stereotypes, unsafe suggestions or accidental exposure to graphic themes.
Open-ended social conversation
Ask whether the teen wants an assistant or a companion. A system designed around persistent character or relationship conversation may encourage more frequent, emotionally intimate use. If the teen is seeking support for loneliness, anxiety or self-harm, involve a trusted adult or qualified professional rather than treating the chatbot as a counselor.
Families requiring message-by-message supervision
Neither the documented ChatGPT for Teens controls nor Meta’s described alert feature provides ordinary, comprehensive parent access to every conversation. If full review is a non-negotiable requirement, set that expectation before creating an account and investigate services whose published policy explicitly supports it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA family safety agreement that matches the technology
- Purpose: Name the allowed uses, such as homework, language practice or brainstorming.
- Privacy: Do not enter passwords, precise location, health records, private school documents or another person’s confidential information.
- Verification: Treat generated answers as drafts until checked against a teacher, primary source or trusted reference.
- Escalation: Tell a parent or another trusted adult if a chatbot encourages secrecy, asks for intimate information, gives dangerous instructions or becomes the teen’s only source of emotional support.
- Time boundaries: Combine chatbot quiet hours with the family’s device, sleep and school rules.
- Account integrity: Use the teen’s real age information and do not bypass age gates or safety settings.
- Review date: Revisit the agreement when the provider changes its controls, the teen’s age status changes or the service adds a new social or companion feature.
What to do when something goes wrong
The chatbot gives dangerous or disturbing advice
- Stop the interaction and do not continue probing for more explicit instructions.
- Save only the information needed to explain what happened, while avoiding unnecessary sharing of private details.
- Tell a parent, guardian, teacher or other trusted adult.
- If there is an immediate danger, contact local emergency services or an appropriate crisis resource rather than relying on the chatbot.
- Review account settings, quiet hours and the family agreement before deciding whether the teen should continue using the service.
The teen expresses imminent self-harm risk
Take the statement seriously and move from the app to human help. Stay with the teen when possible, remove immediate means of harm if it is safe to do so, and contact local emergency or crisis services. A Meta alert, where available, is an additional signal after manual review—not a substitute for a parent’s response. ChatGPT’s documented privacy boundary also means a parent should not assume that ordinary conversation will appear in a dashboard.
A parent cannot find a control
Check whether the parent and teen accounts are correctly linked, whether the account is still classified as a teen account and whether the feature has reached the family’s region. Product labels and rollouts can change. If a setting is not documented for the account, do not assume that a similarly named control exists or works in the same way.
Bottom line for families in 2026
For a teen who needs homework, research and creative assistance, ChatGPT for Teens offers the clearest documented package of learning features, automatic teen handling and parent-set schedules. Its linked controls deliberately preserve ordinary conversation privacy, so it is not a full-monitoring solution.
Meta AI’s teen-account protections are broader social-platform controls, with a narrowly defined, manually reviewed self-harm alert for supervising parents in four countries at the time of Meta’s July 2026 announcement. That alert can supplement family awareness but cannot guarantee detection or replace direct support.
Choose according to the intended use, the level of parent visibility your family actually requires and the quality of evidence behind each safety claim. Recheck official settings and regional availability before enabling an account, because these features are still changing.
