Market.us values the global AI-based defect detection software market at USD 2.4 billion in 2025 and forecasts approximately USD 7.3 billion by 2035, equal to an 11.6% CAGR for 2026–2035. That is a publisher-specific forecast, not a universal industry consensus. Mordor Intelligence uses a narrower market definition and estimates USD 1.07 billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.26 billion by 2031 at a 12.76% CAGR.
The difference comes from scope, segmentation and forecast period. The figures should be used to understand direction and market structure, not added together or treated as interchangeable.

AI-based defect detection software market size at a glance
| Assessment | 2025 value | Forecast value | Forecast period and CAGR | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Market.us | USD 2.4 billion | Approximately USD 7.3 billion in 2035 | 2026–2035; 11.6% CAGR | Global market estimate using Market.us’s own category definitions |
| Mordor Intelligence | USD 1.07 billion | USD 1.24 billion in 2026 and USD 2.26 billion in 2031 | 2026–2031; 12.76% CAGR | Narrower or differently segmented software market estimate |
Market.us’s 11.6% figure answers the headline question, but it should be labeled as the Market.us forecast for 2026–2035. It does not establish that every analyst, region or product category expects exactly the same growth rate.

“AI-based defect detection software” can include a standalone application, an integrated vision system, a cloud platform, an edge appliance, an application programming interface or inspection services. One publisher may count software bundled with cameras and computing hardware, while another may isolate software revenue. Forecast windows also matter: a ten-year projection can produce a different CAGR from a five-year projection even when both describe healthy expansion.

For that reason, the USD 2.4 billion and USD 1.07 billion baselines are not competing measurements of one identical basket. They are estimates built with different taxonomies and methods. Use the source name, year and scope whenever quoting either number.
Which segments are largest?
Market.us segmentation
| Segment | 2025 share or revenue | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud deployment | 67.3% share | Cloud-based model management and centralized operations form the largest deployment category in this assessment. |
| Surface defects | 43.2% share | Surface inspection is the largest defect-type category. |
| Semiconductors and electronics applications | 32.3% share | Electronics manufacturing is the leading application grouping. |
| North America | 36.5% share; USD 0.9 billion revenue | North America is the largest regional market in the 2025 estimate. |
Mordor Intelligence segmentation
| Segment | 2025 share | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Edge and embedded AI | 39.28% | Local inference and embedded processing represent the largest deployment grouping in this taxonomy. |
| Electronics and semiconductor end users | 25.47% | Electronics and semiconductor manufacturing is the largest end-user group. |
Both assessments identify electronics and semiconductor production as the strongest demand center, despite using different labels and percentages. Market.us emphasizes cloud deployment, while Mordor’s segmentation gives the largest share to edge and embedded AI. Those findings are not contradictory: manufacturers can train and govern models centrally while running time-critical inference locally.

- Packaging inspection: checking seals, labels, print quality, closures and package integrity.
- Anomaly detection: flagging unusual patterns when examples of every possible defect are unavailable.
The exact mix depends on the industry, camera, lighting, image quality and training data. A software label alone does not guarantee performance on a particular material or defect.
Cloud, edge and on-premises deployment
| Deployment | Strengths | Trade-offs to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud or SaaS | Centralized training, model management and governance across multiple sites | Connectivity, data-residency rules and response time must fit the production process |
| Edge or embedded AI | Low-latency inference near the line and local handling of inspection data | Compute, storage and model-update resources are constrained by the installed hardware |
| On-premises | Local control of data, networking and plant-system integration | Sites carry responsibility for servers, updates, backups and lifecycle maintenance |
| Hybrid | Centralized development with local production inference | Requires reliable version control and clear ownership of deployment and retraining |
The right architecture is determined by latency, connectivity, data handling and the number of sites—not by the CAGR headline. A plant with millisecond response requirements may place inference at the edge while sending approved images and model versions to a central environment.
Industries driving demand
Electronics and semiconductor factories lead both cited market assessments because they produce high volumes of small, repeatable parts where tiny defects can create substantial yield losses. Other application areas include:

- Automotive, electric vehicles and batteries
- Aerospace and defense
- Pharmaceuticals and medical devices
- Food and beverage
- Photovoltaics
- General discrete and process manufacturing
Each sector has different validation, traceability and safety expectations. A pharmaceutical or medical-device deployment may require more documented validation than a cosmetic inspection line, while a battery line may prioritize internal or structural inspection over visible surface flaws.
How buyers should evaluate a platform
Market share alone does not reveal whether a system will work on a specific production line. Procurement and engineering teams should test:
- Detection recall and false-positive rate: missed defects and unnecessary rejects have different costs.
- Inference latency: confirm that processing keeps pace with conveyor or robot cycles.
- Camera and lighting compatibility: image quality, optics and controlled illumination often determine model quality.
- Training workflow: check labeling tools, minimum sample requirements, handling of rare defects and retraining controls.
- Lifecycle governance: require versioning, rollback, audit trails and monitoring for data drift.
- Plant integration: verify interfaces for MES, ERP, SCADA, programmable logic controllers and existing vision equipment.
- Data residency and cybersecurity: establish where images and models are stored and how updates are authenticated.
- Validation effort and total cost of ownership: include integration, lighting, cameras, edge computers, support and ongoing model maintenance.
Vendor and product landscape
Market.us lists Cognex, Keyence, Omron, Optimax, DAC.digital, Siemens, Basler AG, LandingAI, Intelgic, Musashi AI and Averroes AI among market participants. Mordor Intelligence describes a landscape in which established suppliers combine cameras, computing, software and support, while newer providers offer hardware-neutral platforms and application programming interfaces.

- 4) SDK supports Windows and Linux systems.
- 5) SDK supports VC/C++, VB6, VB.NET, Delphi, C#, JAVA, Python, OpenCV.
Mordor’s 2026 defect-detection update identifies the Cognex In-Sight 3900 Vision System as an AI-enabled edge product launched in 2026. That example illustrates the continuing convergence of industrial cameras, embedded computing and inspection software; it is not evidence that one product is suitable for every line.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What camera and hardware are required?
Automated inspection normally needs an industrial machine-vision camera, controlled machine-vision lighting and computing capable of running the selected model. Choose the camera and optics around the smallest defect that must be detected, the field of view, line speed, working distance and material reflectivity. An edge AI inspection system is useful when the line needs local, predictable response times or cannot send production images off-site.

How to use the 11.6% forecast responsibly
For planning, treat 11.6% as a long-range Market.us scenario from 2026 through 2035. Use the Mordor Intelligence figures as a separate scenario with a 12.76% CAGR from 2026 through 2031. Report the source beside every number, retain the forecast years and avoid presenting either estimate as an official industry consensus.
The durable conclusion is that AI inspection is expanding across manufacturing, with electronics and semiconductor production at the center. The practical decision is architectural: match cloud governance, edge latency, camera and lighting design, integration effort and validation requirements to the inspection task before selecting a platform.
