The best AI app for a child depends on their age, what they want to do, and how a parent can manage access. Check the provider’s current age and account rules first; then consider supervision, privacy, answer reliability, and whether the service works with the child’s account and in your region.
What are the best AI apps for kids?
There is not enough current, app-specific evidence to rank a representative set of dedicated children’s AI apps as “best,” tested, or proven safe. The available official guidance supports a more useful starting point: evaluate each service against the child’s age and purpose, then check its safeguards and availability before enabling it.

Two general-purpose services with relevant official guidance are ChatGPT and Gemini Apps. They are not interchangeable with specialist tutoring products, and the sources cited here do not establish that either is a dedicated children’s learning app.

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. Users aged 13 to 18 need parental consent, and OpenAI advises that an adult conduct any educational interaction with ChatGPT for a child under 13. Check the current OpenAI age guidance before use.

Gemini Apps: supervised access depends on eligibility
Google documents parent-enabled Gemini Apps access for eligible supervised child accounts, managed through Family Link. Access is rolling out, some features have age requirements, and Google says Gemini Apps are unavailable to supervised accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Confirm the account’s eligibility and the current parent guidance for a child’s Gemini Apps experience.
Google warns that its filters are not perfect, recommends exploring the tool with the child, advises against sharing sensitive personal information, and says answers should be double-checked. It also advises parents to explain that Gemini is an AI tool, not a person or confidant.
What children are using AI for
The Common Sense Media Census: AI Use by Tweens and Teens, 2026 reports that, among surveyed children aged 9 to 17, 86% use or interact with AI and 24% do so daily. It also reports that 67% have used AI chatbots. These figures describe the census population and survey context; they should not be assumed to represent every country or age group.
- Among children in the census who use AI, 89% report using it for fun or entertainment and 85% for schoolwork or homework.
- Across children surveyed, 44% say a parent or guardian has not talked with them about how to use AI safely.
The findings show why a single “best” pick is unlikely to fit every child: entertainment, school support, and other creative tasks call for different expectations and levels of adult involvement. See the Common Sense Media 2026 census for the study.

1. Check age and account eligibility
Read the provider’s current minimum-age rule, parental-consent requirement, and child-account instructions. These can differ between services from the same provider. For supervised accounts, verify that the child’s age, account type, and country qualify.
2. Match the app to the task
Decide whether the child wants study guidance, open-ended conversation, entertainment, creative work, image generation, or language practice. A general chatbot is not automatically a specialist tutor, and an answer that sounds confident is not necessarily correct.

Find out whether a parent can enable or disable access, supervise use, or set controls. Do not assume that access controls let a parent inspect every conversation: the cited provider guidance does not establish that level of visibility for every account or service.
4. Set expectations about accuracy and privacy
Tell children not to enter sensitive personal details. Ask them to verify important claims with a trusted source or adult rather than treating generated text as fact. Google’s Gemini Apps Help guidance puts the relationship boundary plainly: “It’s important for you to help your child understand that it’s an AI tool, not a person to confide in.” Google also says: “Our filters try to limit inappropriate content from appearing, but they’re not perfect.”
5. Confirm region and device support
Before installing or enabling an app, check its regional availability, support for the child’s supervised account, device compatibility, and any feature restrictions. Google’s Gemini mobile app availability guidance for Android lists Android tablets among supported device types and specifies Android 9 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM. Availability still varies by region and account eligibility, so a compatible tablet is an access option, not a guarantee that a child can use Gemini.
Can a child use ChatGPT or Gemini?
Possibly, but eligibility is service-specific. For ChatGPT, OpenAI’s guidance says it is not meant for under-13s; ages 13 to 18 require parental consent, and an adult should conduct educational use for a child under 13. For Gemini Apps, a parent can enable access for an eligible supervised child account through Family Link, subject to rollout, feature, age, and regional restrictions. Check the linked official guidance before deciding.

Are AI apps safe for children?
No app should be treated as automatically safe simply because it has filters or parent controls. Google explicitly cautions that its filters are imperfect. For any service, consider the child’s age and maturity, keep an adult involved as appropriate, discourage sharing sensitive information, and make clear that AI is software rather than a trusted person. Verify consequential answers instead of relying on them alone.
Quick Recap
What a parent should verify before enabling an app
- The child meets the provider’s age and account requirements, including any consent rule.
- The intended task is appropriate for a general AI tool or for the specific product being considered.
- You understand the available parent controls and do not assume they provide conversation-by-conversation visibility.
- The child knows not to share sensitive details and to check important answers.
- The service supports the child’s account, country, and device, and its relevant features are available there.
