Choose an AI app builder when you need quick evidence for a small, well-bounded web app and the platform’s supported features, usage charges, hosting, data terms and export options fit your requirements. Hire a developer when the product needs custom integrations, unusual business rules, rigorous testing, regulated-data controls, performance guarantees or an accountable person to maintain it.
The sensible comparison is not a subscription price versus an hourly wage. Estimate the app’s total cost over its useful life: discovery, building, usage, hosting, integrations, testing, security work, support, maintenance and, if necessary, migration to another platform.

What you are actually choosing
An AI app builder is a hosted development environment in which you describe screens and behavior in natural language, then refine generated interface, database and workflow code. The platform usually supplies a browser-based editor, deployment and some combination of hosting, authentication, database and AI-assisted changes. A developer is a person or team who translates a specification into software, selects the architecture, writes or reviews code, operates the systems and owns an agreed set of delivery and maintenance responsibilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Those routes can overlap. A team might use a builder for a prototype and later hire an engineer for a production rebuild, or a developer might use an AI coding assistant while still remaining responsible for the result. The decision is therefore about who controls complexity and risk, not about whether AI appears somewhere in the workflow.

Builder and developer at a glance
| Decision axis | AI app builder | Hired developer |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest path to a testable workflow | Often strong for standard web screens, forms and database-backed flows, subject to the platform’s learning curve and limits. | Depends on briefing, availability and engineering process; a good developer can establish foundations before implementation. |
| Customization | Bounded by supported frameworks, integrations, permissions and generated-code controls. | Can design custom behavior and integrate systems that expose suitable interfaces. |
| Cost shape | Subscription plus credits or workload units, hosting, add-ons and possible expert help. | Discovery and implementation labor, project management, infrastructure, maintenance and any agency overhead. |
| Assurance | You must verify security, accessibility, performance, privacy and reliability for the specific app; vendor capability statements are not a completed audit. | Responsibilities can be written into a contract, but quality still depends on the person or team and on acceptance testing. |
| Portability | Check source-code and data export, deployment options, third-party rights and migration effort before committing. | Can deliver to infrastructure you control, although proprietary dependencies or undocumented decisions can still create lock-in. |
| Ongoing ownership | You remain responsible for monitoring platform usage, renewing plans, handling incidents and arranging maintenance. | An individual or team can be assigned defect fixes, updates, on-call response and operational documentation. |
How an AI app builder works in practice
Describe a narrow first release
Start with one user and one measurable outcome, such as “a member submits a request, a staff user approves it, and both can see its status.” List screens, fields, roles, notifications and failure states before asking the builder to generate anything. A broad prompt such as “build my complete marketplace” hides decisions about payments, moderation, disputes, identity and data retention.
Generate, inspect and refine
The builder produces an initial interface and data model, then accepts incremental changes. Treat each change as a reviewable requirement. Check that field validation, authorization and error handling match the written requirement rather than assuming generated behavior is safe.
Connect services and deploy
Standard integrations may be available through built-in connectors or APIs. Confirm whether an integration is included in your plan, whether usage is metered and who owns the credentials. Test a staging copy with non-sensitive data before connecting production accounts.

Validate with real users
A prototype is evidence, not a launch decision. Ask representative users to complete the core workflow on supported devices. Record completion failures, confusing labels, slow pages, accessibility problems and data that should not be collected. This evidence tells you whether to continue, change the scope or bring in an engineer.

How much does it cost to make an app?
There is no universal app price because “an app” can mean a two-screen internal tool or a multi-tenant product with payments, analytics and compliance obligations. Current list prices illustrate the cost shape, not a like-for-like estimate.
| Platform and plan | Published price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable Free | $0 per month | Credits and included capabilities are plan-dependent; substantial app size or traffic can create additional costs, according to the vendor. |
| Lovable Pro | $25 per month | List price shown on the pricing page accessed in 2026; credit use can span building, hosting and AI features. |
| Lovable Business | $50 per month | List price shown on the same page; verify current grants, limits, support and overage terms before purchase. |
| Bubble Starter | $59 per month, billed annually | Tier has its own workload-unit allowance and feature set; it is not directly comparable with another vendor’s credits. |
| Bubble Growth | $209 per month, billed annually | Workload units and included features differ from Starter and Team. |
| Bubble Team | $549 per month, billed annually | Workload allowance and collaboration features are plan-specific. |
These figures are recurring list prices reported on the vendors’ pricing pages, not the cost of delivering a defined product. Before comparing plans, estimate monthly users, workflow runs, file storage, emails, API calls, database size and expected traffic. Ask what happens when credits or workload units run out: does the app stop, slow down, or incur an overage?
Costs that a subscription table can hide
- Build consumption: AI generations, revisions, background jobs or workload units may be metered separately from the base plan.
- Hosting and scale: traffic, storage, bandwidth, backups and higher environments can add charges.
- External services: payments, email, messaging, maps, analytics, search, identity verification and file processing each have their own pricing and terms.
- People: someone must write requirements, review generated changes, configure domains, test releases and respond to failures.
- Maintenance: dependency updates, vendor API changes, security fixes, data cleanup and user support continue after launch.
- Exit: rebuilding integrations, exporting data and operating elsewhere can be a major future expense.
How much does it cost to hire an app developer?
Published labor figures answer different questions, so label them carefully. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a $135,980 median annual wage for U.S. software developers in May 2025. The figure measures employee wages and the BLS states that its wage data exclude self-employed workers; it is not a freelance quote or a complete project budget. See the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.

| Hiring route | What you pay for | Questions to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | Salary plus recruiting, benefits, payroll, equipment, management and periods when the product is not actively being built. | Can the role cover architecture, security, operations and product decisions, or are additional specialists needed? |
| Independent developer | Agreed hourly, daily or fixed-scope labor, often with the client supplying product direction and infrastructure accounts. | Who owns source code, documentation and credentials? What availability and response time apply after launch? |
| Agency | A team covering design, engineering, testing and project management, usually at a higher blended rate. | Who performs the work, how are change requests priced, and what happens if a key person leaves? |
To obtain useful bids, give every candidate the same brief: target platforms, user roles, screens, workflows, integrations, migration needs, traffic assumptions, security constraints, acceptance tests, launch date and maintenance period. Request a breakdown of discovery, design, implementation, testing, deployment, documentation and post-launch support. A low headline rate can become expensive if it excludes testing, deployment or defect fixes.
Compare total cost over the app’s life
Use a simple five-stage model instead of comparing one month of a builder with one hour of labor:
- Discovery: clarify users, outcomes, data, rules and acceptance criteria.
- Build: include configuration, coding, design, content, integrations and migration.
- Launch: budget domains, production infrastructure, security review, training, monitoring and rollback preparation.
- Operate: include subscriptions, usage, support, backups, incident response, compliance work and routine changes.
- Exit or expand: estimate migration, rewrites, new integrations and additional capacity if the product outgrows its initial route.
Put each cost in a spreadsheet with an owner, billing unit, expected volume and renewal date. Mark uncertain items as ranges and identify what evidence would narrow them. Do not present a savings percentage unless both routes have been priced against the same scope and assumptions; the available figures do not establish such a comparison.
Where builders usually fit well
- A small team needs a working experiment before committing to a larger build.
- The workflow uses conventional forms, records, dashboards, roles and notifications.
- Expected traffic and data volume are modest and predictable.
- The team can accept the platform’s supported database, hosting and integration model.
- A person inside the organization can own testing, account administration and incident triage.
For example, an internal approval tracker with a few roles and a small number of integrations may be an appropriate first builder project. Define the records, approval states, audit fields and retention rule, then test the workflow with actual staff before expanding it.

When hiring a developer is the safer route
- The product requires an integration the platform cannot demonstrate in a staging environment.
- Authorization is unusually complex, or mistakes could expose confidential records.
- You need predictable latency, high availability, offline behavior or specialized processing.
- Regulatory, contractual or customer requirements demand documented controls, testing and incident ownership.
- The app needs a custom data migration, complex billing, real-time collaboration or a long-lived API.
- No internal person can maintain the generated system after launch.
Hiring does not automatically solve these problems. Include architecture review, threat modeling, accessibility checks, load testing, deployment documentation and a support agreement in the scope when those outcomes matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ownership and portability: questions to answer before building
Lovable states on its pricing page: “You own your code, which means the apps, websites, and other projects you build with Lovable, customer data stored in Lovable, as well as any AI output you generate in Lovable.” The same statement carries a caveat that third-party rights in underlying AI models may apply. This is a vendor statement, not a general guarantee for every builder or every component.
Ask the exact platform and plan these questions in writing:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Can the application be deployed to infrastructure you control, and are build scripts and environment settings documented?
- Which generated assets, libraries, templates and AI outputs carry third-party licenses?
- Can you retrieve data after cancellation, and what fees, time limits or support conditions apply?
- What happens to backups, logs, secrets and personal data when the account closes?
- Will a future developer be able to understand and modify the exported system?
How to evaluate a builder before committing
- Write a one-page specification. Include roles, screens, fields, rules, integrations, data retention, supported devices and acceptance tests.
- Build a vertical slice. Implement one complete path from sign-in through the desired outcome, including validation and an error state.
- Measure usage assumptions. Estimate active users, transactions, storage, files, messages and peak traffic, then map them to the plan’s metering.
- Test non-functional requirements. Check keyboard navigation, screen-reader labels, mobile layout, response time, authorization boundaries, backups and recovery procedures.
- Exercise export. Download code and representative data, then ask an independent developer whether the package can be run and maintained.
- Document a rollback. Know how to disable a broken feature, restore data and contact support before inviting real users.
How to hire and manage a developer
- Define acceptance criteria. State observable results, supported browsers and devices, error behavior, security expectations and what “done” means.
- Request comparable proposals. Give each candidate the same brief and ask for assumptions, exclusions, milestones, deliverables and a change-control process.
- Check evidence. Review relevant work, references, testing practices, documentation quality and experience with your required integrations or regulations.
- Set ownership terms. Cover source code, data, domains, cloud accounts, credentials, open-source licenses, confidentiality and the right to receive documentation.
- Use staged payments. Tie payments to demonstrations and acceptance tests rather than an unreviewable final handoff.
- Plan operations. Specify warranty duration, severity levels, response times, monitoring, dependency updates and the hourly or fixed rates for later changes.
Common failure modes and recoveries
The prototype is mistaken for production
Symptom: the happy path works, but permissions, backups, accessibility or failure recovery are untested. Recovery: pause expansion, create acceptance and security checklists, and have a qualified reviewer test the deployed system.
Best Value
Usage costs arrive as a surprise
Symptom: AI generations, workload units, storage or API calls rise with user activity. Recovery: instrument usage, set alerts, cap expensive operations and model a high-traffic month before launch.
The scope is not comparable in hiring bids
Symptom: one quote includes design and testing while another covers coding only. Recovery: normalize deliverables, assumptions, milestones, support and change rates, then compare totals.
The project becomes trapped in a platform
Symptom: data or deployment cannot be moved without a rewrite. Recovery: export early, keep independent copies of critical data, isolate integrations behind documented interfaces and price a migration exercise before dependence grows.
No one owns the app after launch
Symptom: defects, expiring credentials and dependency warnings remain unresolved. Recovery: assign an internal owner or contract explicit maintenance, monitoring and incident duties.
A practical decision checklist
| If most answers are “yes” | Likely first route |
|---|---|
| Can the core workflow be described in a few screens? Are integrations standard? Is traffic modest? Can you test and operate the result? Have export and data terms been verified? | Start with a builder, using a limited pilot and a written exit plan. |
| Are business rules unusual? Are sensitive data, strict availability or regulatory controls involved? Do you need custom infrastructure or a named person accountable for maintenance? | Hire a developer or engineering team, with those obligations in the contract. |
| Are you uncertain whether users want the product at all? | Build the smallest credible experiment, then use user evidence to decide whether to invest in custom engineering. |
How much does it cost to make an app?
The honest answer is “the cost of the defined scope over its life.” A builder’s plan can be inexpensive for a low-volume experiment yet become costly when usage, integrations, support and migration are included. A developer’s quote can be higher at the start but include architecture, testing and an operating handoff that a subscription does not. Define the workflow, volume, assurance level and ownership terms before treating either number as a budget.
How much does it cost to hire an app developer?
Use the BLS employee wage as labor-market context and the AxonBuild hourly range as one broad vendor guide, not as a promise of what your project will cost. Your actual price depends on geography, specialization, urgency, employment model, scope, review requirements and post-launch responsibility. Comparable proposals against identical acceptance criteria are more useful than either headline figure.
