What’s actually slowing this PC down?

AI API pricing has two separate parts: what the provider measures and when you pay. Per-token pricing measures model input and output (and sometimes cached, reasoning, or modality-specific tokens). Usage-based pricing is the broader category that can also meter seconds, calls, images, audio, video, or tools. A subscription may provide an allowance or account benefits, but it does not automatically make API calls unlimited or free.
To forecast a bill, identify every meter for the exact model and endpoint, apply the current rates to a representative workload, then check how credits, caps, reporting delays, and payment timing work for your account.

What an AI API bill actually measures
An API request is not priced simply by the number of times your application sends a prompt. Providers define one or more usage meters, publish a rate for each meter, and apply those rates to your account’s recorded consumption. The meter can differ by model, endpoint, service tier, modality, and feature.
Recommended Free Tools
For a text model, the most familiar meters are input tokens and output tokens. A request can also contain cached input, tool calls, images, audio, or video. Some providers price those categories separately. A payment plan then determines whether you buy credits first, receive an invoice later, or use an allowance attached to another plan. Keeping the meter and the payment schedule separate prevents the most common budgeting mistakes.

The main meters
- Input tokens: the text and other model-readable content sent to the model.
- Cached input tokens: a separately priced category when a provider reuses eligible context.
- Output tokens: the text or reasoning generated by the model.
- Reasoning or other special tokens: categories that may be exposed and charged under a model’s published rules.
- Non-token units: seconds, API calls, images, audio, video, tool invocations, or other feature-specific units.
Tokenization is provider- and model-dependent. The same sentence can produce different token counts in different models, and a model that charges less per million tokens can still generate more tokens for the same task. OpenAI’s token guidance explains both effects and recommends measuring representative work rather than comparing a single headline rate (OpenAI token guidance).
Per-token pricing: how the usage meter works
Per-token pricing charges for the amount of model input and output your application consumes. Rate cards usually list prices per million tokens, but your invoice reflects the actual token counts recorded for each request. Input and output normally have different rates; cached input can have a third rate.
A practical cost formula
For a text-only workload, estimate each period with:
total = (input tokens × input rate) + (cached input tokens × cached-input rate) + (output tokens × output rate)
Convert a per-million-token rate by dividing it by 1,000,000 before multiplying by the token count. Add any applicable tool, modality, priority, batch, or regional charges as separate terms. If a provider exposes reasoning tokens or another billable category, include that category according to its rate card rather than assuming it is part of ordinary output.

Why token counts are difficult to predict
- Different tokenizers: models do not necessarily split the same words, punctuation, code, or non-English text in the same way.
- Prompt shape: system instructions, conversation history, retrieved documents, and tool schemas all add input tokens.
- Output variability: a short answer and a long explanation can have very different output totals even with the same prompt.
- Repeated context: sending the same large history on every request can dominate the bill unless the provider’s cache mechanism applies.
- Multimodal content: images, audio, and video may be converted into provider-defined token or non-token units.
OpenAI states: “A lower price per million tokens does not necessarily produce a lower total cost: models can tokenize the same text differently and generate different amounts of output or reasoning.” Treat that as a workload warning, not merely a pricing footnote (OpenAI Help Center).
Usage-based pricing is broader than per-token pricing
Usage-based billing means you pay for measured consumption. Per-token billing is one form of it, but an API can meter other resources independently. OpenAI’s pricing documentation includes token-priced model rows alongside separate per-second or per-call tool entries. Google’s Gemini tables distinguish models, modalities, and service tiers, so an image, audio, or video workflow can follow different units and rates from a text request (OpenAI API pricing; Google Gemini pricing).
Units you may encounter
| Meter | What it measures | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Input/output tokens | Content read and generated by a model | Are input, cached input, output, and reasoning tokens priced separately? |
| Calls or requests | Number of invocations of an endpoint or tool | Is there a per-call fee in addition to model tokens? |
| Time | Seconds of processing, streaming, or tool operation | Does the timer include setup, idle, or only active processing? |
| Modality units | Image, audio, or video input/output | Are units tokens, seconds, pixels, frames, or another provider-defined measure? |
| Service tier | Batch, priority, or other delivery mode | Does a faster or deferred tier change the rate or minimum charge? |
The provider’s current rate card for your exact model and feature is authoritative. A model’s text rate cannot be used to infer the price of an audio transcription, video generation, embedding, fine-tuning job, or tool call.
Subscription plans, API credits, and API access
A subscription describes recurring access or a contractual plan. API billing describes consumption in an API organization or project. They can be linked, but one does not inherently replace the other. Before assuming that a consumer or workspace plan covers development traffic, verify whether it includes API credits, which services may use them, how they expire, and what happens after the allowance is exhausted.
Example of provider-specific credits
Anthropic documents that some Max and Team plans can include monthly API credits when a Console organization is linked. Those credits are used first, expire at the end of the billing cycle, and cannot be used in Claude Code or Claude apps. The same documentation describes separate prepaid credits for API and playground usage, while some organizations that arrange terms through sales are invoiced monthly in arrears (Anthropic billing guidance).

That example is not a universal subscription rule. Another provider may offer no API allowance, a different allowance, a separate API account, or a contract with negotiated rates. Read the plan’s service scope and the API organization’s billing settings rather than relying on the plan name.

Payment timing changes your cash flow and service behavior; it does not change the underlying usage meter.
Prepaid credits
You load a balance before requests run. Each billable request deducts from that balance. Prepay can make a hard budget easier to enforce, but you must monitor the remaining balance and understand expiration and refund rules.
Google’s Gemini billing documentation says unused prepaid credits expire after 12 months and are non-refundable except for the stated exception. Service can stop when the balance reaches zero. Google is transitioning some developer accounts between plans, so the options, eligibility, and deadlines shown in your account may differ from another account (Google Gemini billing).
Postpaid usage
Eligible accounts accrue charges and pay later under the account’s billing arrangement. Postpay avoids interruptions caused by a depleted credit balance, but it creates overage risk if traffic spikes or a key is misused. Set project-level budgets, alerts, and rate limits where the provider supports them.

Monthly invoicing
Some sales-arranged organizations receive an invoice after the billing period instead of purchasing credits through a self-serve console. Contract terms, eligibility, currency, tax treatment, and payment deadlines are account-specific; do not infer them from a public self-serve price table.
How to estimate an AI API bill before launch
Use one representative workload for every model or provider you are considering. A realistic sample should include ordinary requests, long-context requests, retries, tool calls, and the output length your product actually needs.
- Define the unit of work. Choose a task such as one support answer, document extraction, code review, or image analysis. Record expected requests per user, day, and month.
- Record the exact configuration. Write down provider, model version, endpoint, region if relevant, service tier, modality, batch or priority mode, and whether prompt caching is enabled.
- Measure tokens and other units. Capture input, cached input, output, reasoning, call, second, image, audio, and video quantities from representative runs. Do not estimate tokens from word count alone.
- Apply current rates. Use the rate-card row for that exact model and category. Multiply each meter by its own rate and add tool or modality charges.
- Include operational overhead. Add retries, safety or validation passes, retrieval context, conversation history, and failed requests that the provider still bills.
- Scale by traffic. Multiply the per-task total by expected volume, then model a high-traffic case and a sudden retry or abuse event.
- Compare outcomes. Record quality, latency, completion rate, and total cost per successful task. A cheaper unit price is not a better choice if it requires longer prompts, more retries, or larger outputs.
Worked method with variables
Suppose a workflow records I input tokens, C cached tokens, and O output tokens per successful task. If the corresponding rates are rI, rC, and rO per token, the task cost is I×rI + C×rC + O×rO. Add a tool fee T or a time-based fee S when those meters apply. Multiply the result by successful tasks and include the measured retry rate. This keeps assumptions visible when you change models or traffic.
A volatile price example
On 13 October 2026, Google’s live Gemini pricing page displayed one model example at $1.50 per million input tokens and $9.00 per million text output tokens, with video output listed separately. Those figures describe that page’s model row, modality, and conditions at that time; they are not a universal Gemini price or a durable recommendation. Confirm the current model, tier, modality, and rate immediately before committing to a budget (Google Gemini pricing).

How the pricing models compare
| Model or arrangement | What determines the bill | When money moves | Main risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-token API | Input, cached input, output, and possibly reasoning tokens | Prepaid, postpaid, or invoiced depending on account | Tokenization and generated output differ by model |
| Broader usage-based API | Tokens plus calls, seconds, tools, or modality units | Same payment choices as the account | A non-token feature adds a separate meter |
| Subscription with API allowance | Included credits first, then ordinary API rates or restrictions | Recurring subscription charge; API allowance may reset or expire | Allowance may cover only specified services and may not roll over |
| Prepaid API credits | Each request deducts from a purchased balance | Before consumption | Expiration, non-refundability, and shutdown at zero balance |
| Postpaid or monthly invoice | Accumulated measured usage | After consumption | Overages, delayed reports, and contractual eligibility |
Controls that keep an API bill predictable
Use the provider’s usage records and cost dashboard to reconcile what your application thinks it sent with what the provider billed. OpenAI documents reviewing API usage and costs in its account tools (OpenAI usage and cost guidance).

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Separate projects or organizations: keep production, development, experiments, and customers distinct so one budget does not hide another.
- Set budgets and alerts: alert on daily and monthly thresholds, then decide who can raise a limit.
- Restrict keys: store keys server-side, rotate them, and limit permissions. A leaked key can create billable traffic quickly.
- Cap request size: enforce maximum input length, output tokens, file size, tool iterations, and execution time.
- Control retries: use exponential backoff with a maximum attempt count; otherwise a failing dependency can multiply charges.
- Log cost dimensions: record model, token counts, cache status, modality, tool calls, latency, user, and request outcome without storing sensitive content unnecessarily.
- Review reporting delay: dashboards and controls may not update instantly. Google’s billing documentation warns that usage can exceed a limit while billing data is still processing, so leave a safety margin (Google Gemini billing).
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“My chat subscription includes unlimited API use.”
Usually, that conclusion is unsupported. Check the subscription’s API allowance, eligible services, expiry, and overage terms. If no API allowance is documented, budget API usage separately.
“Usage-based and per-token mean the same thing.”
Per-token is a usage-based method, but usage-based billing can also charge by seconds, calls, tools, or modality. Read every applicable row on the rate card.
“The lowest input-token rate is the cheapest model.”
Measure the complete task. Different tokenizers, output lengths, reasoning behavior, retries, and tool calls can reverse the apparent ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A dashboard total is final in real time.”
Usage records can lag, and enforcement can occur after additional requests are processed. Keep internal logs, configure conservative limits, and reconcile invoices after the period closes.
“Prepaid credits are always safer.”
Prepay can cap spending when service stops at zero, but an expiring or non-refundable balance can waste unused funds. Postpay may be operationally smoother but needs stronger alerts and key security.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist for choosing a pricing arrangement
- Have you identified every meter used by the endpoint, including tools and modalities?
- Did you test the same representative tasks on each candidate model?
- Are input, cached input, output, and reasoning rates recorded separately?
- Do you know whether your subscription, if any, provides API credits and where they can be spent?
- Is your account eligible for prepaid, postpaid, or invoiced billing?
- What happens at a zero balance, budget cap, expired credit, or delayed usage report?
- Are projects, keys, retries, and request sizes controlled?
- Have you checked the live provider pages for model, region, tier, and date changes before launch?
