Yes—but as a screening tool, not a replacement for camera inspections. A 2026 Tohoku University study combined wastewater DNA from sulfate-reducing bacteria with pipe and network data to rank buried sewer sections by likely corrosion risk. Utilities can use that map to decide where to send inspection crews first, while CCTV and engineering review remain necessary to confirm defects and choose repairs.

What the Tohoku University method does

Sewer corrosion is partly biological. Sulfate-reducing bacteria can contribute to sulfide production, which is associated with microbially induced corrosion in sewer environments. Because pipes are underground and expensive to inspect frequently, a biological signal that points to higher-risk areas could make maintenance more targeted.

The team sampled wastewater at 40 manholes in a residential sewer network over two years. Laboratory analysis looked for DNA associated with sulfate-reducing-bacteria targets, including Desulfobulbus, Desulfovibrio and the functional gene dsrB. The researchers then used species-distribution models to estimate where those organisms were likely to occur between the sampled manholes.

Those habitat estimates were combined with physical and network attributes: pipe age, diameter, slope, pipe-network slope and upstream building area. A Random Forest classifier was evaluated against municipal CCTV inspection records covering 3,498 pipe sections.

What the reported accuracy means

Model or result Reported value How to interpret it
Desulfobulbus habitat model ROC-AUC 0.925 The model separated higher- and lower-potential habitat well in the investigated network.
Selected corrosion classifier Test-set PR-AUC 0.670 Useful but imperfect performance when identifying the relatively small group of severely corroded sections.
Most important overall feature Pipe age Age contributed more to the final model than any other single feature.
Leading microbial predictors Desulfobulbus and dsrB, followed by Desulfovibrio These variables added biological information beyond conventional asset attributes.

Tohoku’s 16 October 2026 release says Desulfobulbus had the strongest relationship with deterioration among the biological factors tested. Professor Daisuke Sano described its usefulness as surprising and said it ranked second only to pipe age as a predictor.

How wastewater DNA becomes a geographic risk map

1. Sample accessible points

Technicians collect wastewater at selected manholes rather than opening every pipe. In this project, 40 manholes supplied the biological observations.

2. Measure microbial signals

Molecular tests estimate the presence or abundance of target organisms or genes. The targets in this study indicate conditions associated with sulfate reduction, rather than directly measuring wall thickness or structural loss.

3. Estimate unsampled habitat

Species-distribution models use the sample results and environmental or network context to estimate bacterial habitat potential between sampling points. That step extends point measurements into a map of likely conditions across connected pipe segments.

4. Add asset and network context

The model considers age, diameter and slope alongside network characteristics such as pipe slope and the area served by upstream buildings. This prevents the biological signal from being treated as the only explanation for corrosion risk.

5. Rank sections for inspection

The Random Forest output is a prioritization list. A high-ranked segment is a candidate for earlier CCTV inspection or other field checks; it is not proof that corrosion is present.

Why this matters for maintenance planning

Conventional camera inspections are costly and time-consuming, and a utility cannot normally inspect every span at short intervals. A risk map can concentrate those inspections where failure consequences or deterioration likelihood appear greatest. The expected benefit is better triage: fewer resources spent inspecting low-risk sections first, and earlier attention to sections that could otherwise fail before the next scheduled survey.

The method also turns an otherwise invisible biological condition into a location-based signal. Sano said combining wastewater DNA with ecological modeling produced geographic maps that could help municipalities prioritize inspections before costly failures occur.

What the evidence does not prove

  • The reported performance comes from one investigated residential network, not a universal citywide guarantee.
  • The results do not establish that the same accuracy will hold for every pipe material, climate, sewer design, catchment or sampling schedule.
  • A PR-AUC of 0.670 means the classifier still produces false positives and misses some high-risk sections. It should not be used as an automatic repair order.
  • The study did not publish a deployment cost, a validated cross-city transfer test or a consumer implementation protocol.

Utilities would therefore need local calibration, laboratory and data-management capability, and a defined process for confirming high-risk predictions with CCTV, field measurements and engineering judgment.

How it fits with smart-sewer systems

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency uses “smart sewers” for combinations of real-time monitoring, modeling, data processing and artificial intelligence or machine learning. Flow and level sensors describe operational conditions such as capacity, surcharge and overflow risk. The Tohoku approach adds biological and asset-condition signals focused on corrosion screening. These are complementary rather than competing systems.

Network analytics platforms

Jacobs markets Aqua DNA as a wastewater-network analytics platform that combines existing sensors and analytics, prioritizes alerts and presents a unified network view. Its listed applications include incident reporting, inflow and infiltration detection, blockage analytics and storage optimization. Jacobs reports United Utilities case-study figures of a 14% reduction in external flooding, 20% reduction in sewer flooding, 18% reduction in pollution events and 13% reduction in blockages. Those are vendor-reported results from a separate deployment, not findings from the Tohoku corrosion study.

Asset-planning systems

Jacobs Asset Plan IQ combines CCTV, geographic information systems and operational data for deterioration forecasting, condition scoring, remaining-useful-life estimates and lifecycle-cost modeling. A microbial corrosion-risk layer could potentially feed such a workflow, but the Tohoku publication does not report an integration with that product.

  • Students will have fun analyzing sample water for eight different test factors.

AI-assisted CCTV review

United Utilities has reported using VAPAR to semi-automate fault detection in CCTV footage. The utility stresses that AI is not a stand-alone tool and that outputs still require review. That caution applies equally to a DNA-based risk ranking: automation can focus human attention, but it does not remove inspection or sign-off.

How to compare corrosion-screening options

Option Primary signal Typical decision Coverage Human validation
Wastewater eDNA mapping Microbial DNA and ecological habitat estimates Rank pipe sections for corrosion inspection Sampled points extended to unsampled spans by modeling CCTV, field checks and engineering review
CCTV inspection with AI review Video imagery of visible defects Label defects and condition states Only inspected segments Technician review remains necessary
Flow and level monitoring Real-time hydraulic measurements Overflow, surcharge, capacity or cleaning alerts Sensor locations and modeled network areas Operational and engineering confirmation
GIS and asset-history modeling Age, material, maintenance and location records Deterioration forecasts and rehabilitation plans Potentially the whole recorded network Asset-management and engineering review

When evaluating a system, ask what signal it uses, what decision it produces, whether it covers unsampled pipe, which people must validate the result, how transferable the evidence is, and whether the utility can support the required laboratory, sensor or data integrations.

A practical deployment sequence

  1. Define the decision. Decide whether the immediate goal is corrosion screening, annual CCTV scheduling, emergency response or rehabilitation planning.
  2. Assemble baseline records. Clean pipe age, material, diameter, slope, connectivity, upstream-building and prior CCTV data before adding a new model.
  3. Design representative sampling. Select manholes that cover different pipe ages, slopes, catchment conditions and suspected corrosion environments rather than sampling only convenient locations.
  4. Run molecular testing over time. Repeated sampling helps distinguish persistent biological patterns from short-lived wastewater changes.
  5. Train and validate locally. Compare predictions with confirmed CCTV condition labels and report precision-recall performance, not just an overall accuracy number.
  6. Use rankings to schedule confirmation. Send cameras or field crews to the highest-priority sections, record the findings and update the model as new labels arrive.

Costs and remaining questions

The publication and Tohoku release do not state a price for sampling, DNA analysis, software, staff or network-wide rollout. Procurement teams should request those figures separately, along with laboratory turnaround times, data-retention requirements, model retraining procedures and support for different pipe materials and climates.

Important replication questions remain: How often must samples be collected? How far can a model trained in one network transfer to another? Which microbial concentrations or environmental variables most improve predictions? Until those questions are answered with cross-city testing, the strongest use case is targeted inspection in a network that has local data for calibration.

The bottom line

Wastewater DNA plus AI can reveal a useful biological dimension of sewer-corrosion risk. In the Tohoku network, Desulfobulbus and dsrB improved a model whose dominant feature was still pipe age, and the resulting map helped identify where severe corrosion was more likely. The technology is best treated as a decision-support layer that makes CCTV and engineering work more selective—not as an autonomous diagnosis of buried pipes.
