AI is changing email marketing by connecting work that used to happen separately: drafting, audience selection, personalization, send timing, testing, and analysis. Generative AI can create or revise copy; predictive systems can use past interactions to recommend segments, content, or timing. Neither guarantees better results. The value depends on usable data, a clear campaign goal, deliverability, controlled measurement, human review, and compliance with the rules that apply to the sender and audience.
How is AI changing email marketing?
AI is best understood as a set of capabilities across a campaign workflow, not as a copywriting feature alone. A marketer might use one system to draft variants, another to select an audience from past behavior, and analytics tools to assess what happened after the send. Some platforms combine several of these functions.

Salesforce describes uses including adapting content to audience segments, drawing recommendations from CRM and customer-interaction data, analyzing email, website, and purchase behavior, and offering features such as send-time optimization, content selection, subject-line testing, and multi-variant messages. These are vendor-described capabilities, not evidence that every platform offers them or that they will improve every campaign. Salesforce’s guide to AI in email marketing is a useful overview of the workflow possibilities.

Generative systems produce drafts or alternatives from a brief. They can help create subject-line options, rewrite copy for a defined segment, or produce variations for a test. They do not independently establish whether a product claim is true, an offer is still valid, or a message fits the brand.

Predictive and analytical AI: deciding what may fit
Predictive systems use historical data to estimate which audience, content, timing, or next action may be relevant. Their recommendations are only as useful as the input data and the goal they are optimizing for. A model trained on incomplete or outdated records can confidently suggest the wrong audience or message.
How can AI personalize email campaigns?
Personalization can range from selecting content for a broad segment to tailoring a message based on a person’s interactions or purchase history. The practical sequence is to define a relevant customer signal, ensure it is reliable and permitted for the intended use, then decide what change to the message or send strategy that signal should trigger.
- Start with a useful signal: for example, a recent interaction or a product category a subscriber has shown interest in, rather than collecting more data simply because it is available.
- Check its quality and permission: confirm where the data came from, whether it is current, and whether the sender has a valid basis to use it for this purpose.
- Keep the logic inspectable: staff should be able to understand, correct, and limit the data and rules used to form segments or recommendations.
- Review the resulting message: ensure the content is accurate and appropriate for the people selected.
More automated targeting does not remove the need for data governance. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office guidance on direct marketing using electronic mail, updated 28 April 2026, covers PECR requirements, consent, subscriber types, soft opt-ins, bought-in lists, public contact details, opt-outs, data-protection rules, and tracking pixels. It describes a charitable-purpose soft opt-in introduced by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, but that option is limited to cases meeting its requirements. This UK guidance is not a general permission rule for marketers elsewhere.

Will AI write marketing emails?
AI can write a first draft or generate alternatives, but a person should remain accountable for what is sent. Fluent wording is not proof of accuracy. Review factual claims, pricing and discount terms, dates, eligibility conditions, tone, and the audience logic before sending.
The FTC’s AI topic page records agency matters involving AI-related marketing claims, including a 21 May 2026 announcement about a settlement concerning alleged deception in marketing an AI-powered service. That is not a special rule for email copy, but it underscores the need to avoid unsupported claims about what an AI product can do or what results it will produce.
Trust is also a consideration when AI-generated material is used. A Gartner Consumer Community survey of 335 U.S. consumers, conducted in October and November 2025, found that 78% said explicit labeling of AI-generated content was “very important” or “the most important factor” in maintaining trust. This finding concerns AI-generated content generally, not email specifically; whether disclosure is appropriate depends on context and applicable law. Gartner reported the survey and its forecast.

Will AI improve email open rates?
It may help a team make better-informed choices about subject lines, segments, or send timing, but the available evidence does not establish a universal numerical increase in opens, clicks, conversions, revenue, or inbox placement caused by AI. A platform’s feature list and an industry benchmark are not a substitute for controlled results from your own campaigns.

Decide in advance which outcome matters—such as qualified clicks or purchases, rather than opens alone—and compare like with like. If audience selection, copy, and timing all change at once, the result will not show which change mattered.
- Set a specific objective. Choose a campaign outcome tied to the business goal and define the measurement period.
- Keep a control. Hold back a comparable group or retain the existing approach so there is a meaningful baseline.
- Isolate a change. Test one variable, such as a generated subject-line variant or a timing recommendation, rather than changing several things simultaneously.
- Assess downstream results. Review the chosen outcome and relevant engagement measures; do not attribute a gain to AI if the comparison cannot support that conclusion.

How AI relates to deliverability
Inbox placement is not determined by personalization alone. Sender reputation and authentication, recipient engagement, message relevance, and other factors all matter. AI can influence targeting and relevance, but it does not replace sound sending practices or make an unwanted message welcome.
Validity’s 2026 Email Deliverability Benchmark, published in March 2026, describes AI as influencing personalization, behavioral segmentation, product selection, and inbox relevance. It also notes that AI can make fraudulent email more convincing and that AI-powered segmentation and targeting are features users want in new sending platforms. Those observations describe industry conditions and user interest; they do not show that adopting AI by itself causes better inbox placement.
What are the best AI email marketing tools?
There is no single best tool for every team. Evaluate platforms against a real workflow bottleneck and the strength of your data and measurement practices, rather than choosing one because it carries an AI label.
Best Value
| What to evaluate | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Data foundation | Which customer records and interaction sources can it use? Can staff inspect, correct, and limit the data? What consent and governance controls are available? |
| Workflow fit | Does it address a concrete need such as drafting, segmentation, timing, recommendations, or analytics? Can the team connect that function to an existing campaign goal? |
| Testing and measurement | Can you preserve a control group, isolate variables, and connect email activity to downstream outcomes? |
| Deliverability and security | How does the platform support relevant targeting while your team maintains authentication and defenses against fraud? |
| Human oversight | Can reviewers check claims, terms, tone, segment logic, and unusual outputs before a send? |
| Compliance | Can the use be configured to meet the email marketing and AI rules that apply in your markets and use case? |
Start with the smallest workflow that solves a real problem, then evaluate it using a controlled campaign. A feature that saves drafting time may be worthwhile even if it does not increase opens; a targeting feature is harder to justify if the underlying records are unreliable or the team cannot measure its effect.

Requirements depend on the sender’s market, the people reached, the data used, and how the AI system is deployed. Do not assume that a rule described for one jurisdiction applies everywhere, or that all AI-written marketing emails receive the same legal treatment.

The European Commission’s AI Act overview states that Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 became applicable on 2 August 2026, with exceptions and extended timelines for specified high-risk systems. The overview says providers of generative AI must ensure generated content is identifiable and that certain categories must be visibly labeled; the transparency rules came into effect in August 2026. This does not establish that every AI-written marketing email must carry a visible label. Classification and obligations depend on the system and use, so consult applicable provisions and current guidance for the specific case.
Where email marketing may go next
More connected, individualized interactions are a plausible direction, but forecasts should not be confused with current adoption or proven email outcomes. Gartner forecast in January 2026 that 60% of brands would use agentic AI to facilitate streamlined one-to-one interactions by 2028. That is a forecast about brand interactions broadly, not an observed rate of AI use in email marketing. Gartner Marketing researcher Emily Weiss described the shift as “the end of channel-based marketing as we know it”; that is a forecast-oriented view of marketing, not an established description of email alone. Gartner’s announcement provides the forecast’s context.
For email teams, the useful implication is not to automate every decision. It is to connect relevant data, message choices, and measurement carefully, with people responsible for the results. Better automation can make a sound workflow faster; it cannot make poor data, weak permission practices, or an untested strategy sound.
