The practical response is to build financial fundamentals alongside AI and data skills, communication, and judgment. Courses can help fill specific gaps; none of the reviewed sources shows that a course can save a particular job or guarantee employment.
AI is changing finance tasks, not proving a job-loss timetable
It helps to distinguish tasks from jobs. AI can automate or speed up parts of a role without eliminating the role itself. In investment work, the possible changes extend beyond isolated productivity gains: the CFA Institute Research and Policy Center discusses how AI could affect information processing, capital allocation, risk management, market structure, and professional accountability. These are areas of analysis and potential change, not evidence that every finance job will be displaced. Read the CFA Institute report on AI and the future of finance.

The sources reviewed do not establish a finance-wide count of jobs AI will eliminate or a reliable timeline. Broader labor-market analysis from the IMF says advanced economies may experience AI’s benefits and risks sooner because more of their workforces are in cognitive-intensive jobs. That is general context, not a finance-specific forecast. The IMF’s January 2024 staff discussion note also considers possible productivity gains and inequality risks.

Routine, lower-level tasks are a particular concern for early-career workers, but the evidence here is survey reporting and individual opinion, not measured job losses. In its 2024 Graduate Outlook Survey coverage, CFA Institute reported that nearly two-thirds of surveyed students and graduates thought AI and automation would make it harder to secure their desired job. Around two-thirds also considered the technologies important to their desired career path, and more than 90% believed learning to use them would benefit their career prospects. These findings describe respondents’ expectations, not actual hiring outcomes. CFA Institute’s article on graduates and AI in finance includes both concern about automation and optimism about human contribution.

In that article, investment banking analyst Liam Newport of Gresham Partners said, “I do see it replacing jobs at the lower level.” That is one professional’s view, not a measured estimate. Recent graduate Hugo Heanly offered a different emphasis: “I don’t think it’s going to be as disruptive as everyone believes,” while describing basic company analysis and meeting materials as work AI could automate and expecting the “people part” of finance to be replaced later. These comments illustrate uncertainty; they do not settle the outcome.
The finance skill set is technical and human
Finance employers describe a hybrid profile: professionals need to understand data and AI tools, know the underlying finance, and be able to communicate, question, and validate results. CFA Institute’s 6 March 2026 employer-skills article names AI, machine learning, data science, and Python alongside financial analysis, Excel modeling, geopolitical awareness, sustainability knowledge, and familiarity with emerging assets. It also describes the continuing need for people to meet bespoke requirements, review AI-written code, interpret outputs, and audit models. See CFA Institute’s 2026 skills blueprint.
What a finance-sector survey says employers value
A CFA Institute press release published 2 July 2026 reported a survey of 500 finance-sector professionals in management roles. The figures below are respondents’ views, not objective measures of hiring, promotion, or skills across every employer and country. The release describes the survey and its findings.

Soft skills such as communication, collaboration, and teamwork were identified as the largest gap.
- Employability and advancement: 67% named soft skills as making professionals most employable, 49% named AI skills, and 32% identified soft skills as most important for promotion into more senior roles.
- Day-one technical skills: 61% named financial statement analysis, 51% Excel proficiency, 36% interpreting financial datasets, and 35% using financial data platforms. AI for finance was named by 30%.
- Skills in development: 47% considered AI skills to be emerging as most important for new finance professionals, and 61% said they were actively developing AI skills for their own progression.
Peter Watkins, CFA Institute’s Senior Director of University Programmes, put the mix succinctly: “Being good with numbers alone is not enough: a career in finance is both technical and social.”
How to turn that profile into a learning plan
- Strengthen finance fundamentals: Practice financial statement analysis, financial modeling, and Excel. These skills help you understand whether an AI-generated answer is plausible and useful.
- Build data and AI literacy: Learn to work with financial datasets and understand what AI tools can and cannot do. Python may be especially useful for investment professionals, but the right technical depth depends on your role and starting point.
- Practice validation: Check assumptions, outputs, and AI-written code rather than treating a plausible answer as a verified one. Understand how a model’s limitations affect the decision you are making.
- Develop communication and judgment: Explain analysis clearly, collaborate, and make decisions where context and accountability matter. Technical fluency is more useful when you can connect it to a real finance question.
Learning agility is part of keeping those skills current. In a 2025 CFA Institute article, BCG’s Sagar Goel called it “The number one skill” for the future; Rebecca Kellogg, Global Head of UBS University, highlighted “Curiosity, curation and communication.” CFA Institute’s article on future finance skills also reports Association for Talent Development figures: finance employees averaged 26 hours of formal learning per year, compared with 17.4 hours across all industries in the 2024 State of the Industry report. Those learning-hour figures do not show that any particular course improves employment outcomes.

Compare courses against your actual skills gap
- Role fit and starting level: Does the material match the work you want to do and the knowledge you already have?
- Practical finance application: Does it teach relevant workflows, or focus mainly on general AI concepts?
- Technical depth: Are the tools and prerequisites appropriate for your goal?
- Validation and governance: Does the course address checking outputs, responsible use, and model oversight?
- Time, cost, and proof of learning: Confirm current duration and price, and whether an assessment or certificate is included.
- Current availability: Make sure the course is open and the listed curriculum is still current.
No reviewed source establishes that one of these options is universally best. Choose based on the gap you need to close, rather than on a promise that a credential will secure a role.

Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical way to prepare without betting on a forecast
- Map your role into tasks. Identify routine work, judgment-heavy decisions, and tasks that depend on communication or context. This helps you target learning without assuming that an entire job will disappear.
- Choose one concrete skill gap. For example, strengthen financial statement analysis, Excel modeling, interpreting datasets, or understanding AI workflows. Use employer expectations and the work you want to do to prioritize.
- Practice with verification in mind. When using an AI tool for a finance task, check its assumptions and outputs against financial knowledge and reliable data. The ability to evaluate an answer is as important as producing one quickly.
- Pair technical learning with communication. Practice explaining what an analysis supports, what it does not establish, and what judgment remains necessary.
- Reassess as tools and courses change. Keep learning in manageable cycles; published course details and employer skill needs can evolve.
