Chainalysis found that 89.3% of qualifying wallets first funded in the second quarter of 2026 received another deposit within 30 days. That is a sharp increase from 70.6% for wallets first funded in the third quarter of 2025. The result shows repeated funding among already active x402 wallets—not proof that every wallet represents a profitable, independent business.
What the 89.3% refill figure actually measures
The statistic comes from a specific cohort. Chainalysis counted wallets first funded in Q2 2026 that had transactions on at least two separate days, then measured whether each wallet received another deposit within 30 days. Of those qualifying wallets, 89.3% were funded again. The comparable Q3 2025 cohort had a 70.6% repeat-funding rate.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That definition matters. A second deposit means an already active wallet needed or received more funds during the observation window. It does not show that the wallet belonged to an independent customer, that its purchases delivered useful results, or that its operator earned more than transaction and infrastructure costs. Wallets that never transacted on two separate days were excluded, so this is not a refill rate for every x402 wallet.
| Measure | Finding | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 2026 cohort refill rate | 89.3% | Wallets first funded in Q2 2026 that transacted on at least two separate days and received another deposit within 30 days |
| Q3 2025 cohort refill rate | 70.6% | Same qualifying-wallet definition |
| x402 activity on Base | More than 138 million transactions | By the end of Chainalysis’s 2026 reporting period |
| Typical payment size | More than 87% between $0.0001 and $0.10 | Payments recorded during the 16 months ending September 2026 |
| Median funding-to-first-spend time | 18 minutes | By Q3 2026 |
| Wallets spending within one hour | 67% | Q3 2026, versus 4% in Q3 2025 |
Why AI agents need to refill x402 wallets
An agent that pays for services autonomously needs a balance it can spend without waiting for a person to approve every request. It may call a model-inference endpoint, retrieve context, query a search index, run code analysis or obtain market data dozens of times per hour. When the balance falls below a configured threshold, an operator, treasury service or funding agent can deposit more USDC or another supported crypto asset.

The payment sizes explain why this model is attractive. More than 87% of x402 payments in the 16-month period ending September 2026 were between $0.0001 and $0.10. At those values, a conventional checkout, invoice or card authorization can cost more in fees and friction than the underlying service. Repeated refills therefore indicate that some wallets are being used as operating balances for continuing machine activity.
Adoption also appears to be getting faster. The median time from seed funding to a first x402 spend was 18 minutes by Q3 2026, and 67% of Q3 2026 wallets spent within an hour of funding. The corresponding share was 4% in Q3 2025. Faster spending can reflect better tooling and more automated workflows, although it does not by itself establish useful commerce.
How x402 lets an agent pay an API
The Coinbase x402 whitepaper describes x402 as an open payment standard for autonomous payment for API access, data and digital services. It uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status that web services already have available but historically used inconsistently.

- The agent sends a normal request. It calls an endpoint without an approved payment attached.
- The service returns payment terms. In response to the missing or invalid payment, the server returns HTTP 402 and specifies the amount, asset, destination and other payment details needed for that request.
- The wallet signs authorization. The agent’s programmatic wallet holds USDC or another supported crypto asset, creates a payment authorization and signs it with its controlled key material.
- The agent retries. It sends the signed authorization with the original request, rather than opening an account, entering an API key or waiting for an invoice.
- The service verifies and broadcasts. The provider checks the authorization and payment, broadcasts the transaction on the relevant network and, after validation, returns the requested API response.
x402 wallets are designed for machine-controlled use: they store funds, sign payloads and authorize on-chain payments through software. The x402 documentation says this allows an AI-agent buyer to transact without account creation or conventional credential management. It identifies the Coinbase Developer Platform Wallet API as a recommended option for programmatic payments and key management, but the protocol itself is intended to be open rather than tied to one wallet implementation.
What agents are buying with USDC
Observed x402 spending spans both AI infrastructure and ordinary digital services. Chainalysis tracks payments for model inference, code review, financial intelligence, data and search APIs, agent frameworks and tool catalogs, gaming, token issuance, gambling and other services. The x402 whitepaper also lists market-data APIs, context retrieval, cloud resources and pay-per-article access.
Information-heavy services and AI infrastructure became more durable categories as early speculative activity faded. That pattern is consistent with agents using x402 as a metered operating layer: pay for a result when it is needed, then stop paying when the task ends, rather than maintain a broad subscription portfolio.

Where geographically attributed activity is concentrated
| Service category | Geographic finding |
|---|---|
| All agent-to-service transactions with an identified location | The United States accounted for 30% |
| AI model-inference payments | 88.1% were attributed to the United States |
| Agent frameworks and tool catalogs | 41.8% were attributed to the United States |
| Data and search APIs | 23.2% were attributed to the United States |
| Security and code-analysis payments | About 90% of geographically attributed activity was linked to China, much of it involving AgentLISA |
These are shares of geographically identified or attributed activity, not estimates of every transaction worldwide. Attribution can be incomplete, especially when agents, providers and wallet funders operate in different jurisdictions.

The refill surge is a behavior signal, not a profitability test. A wallet can be refilled because an agent is genuinely consuming an API, because an operator is testing a workflow, or because funds are circulating among related addresses.
A July 2026 academic study, as reported by CryptoSlate, classified 21.2% of 136.7 million Base settlements as fictitious, including self-payments and closed loops. The same report said 63.78% of settlements occurred within clusters linked to funding wallets. Those figures should be treated as secondary reporting until the underlying paper is independently checked; they are nevertheless an important qualification to any claim that all x402 volume represents independent customer demand.

The practical interpretation is narrower and more defensible: repeat funding shows that a substantial share of active wallets continued operating after their initial deposit. To establish genuine commerce, analysts would also need evidence of independent counterparties, useful outputs, recurring service consumption and economics that exceed network and provider costs.
How x402 differs from cards and subscriptions
| Dimension | x402 | Conventional card or subscription billing |
|---|---|---|
| Payment unit | Usually per request, response or metered action | Card transaction or recurring subscription period |
| Automation | Machine can authorize within programmed spending rules | Usually begins with human checkout or account approval |
| Transaction economics | Designed for very small payments, including fractions of a cent | Fixed card fees and minimum practical charges can make tiny payments uneconomic |
| Settlement asset | USDC or another supported crypto asset | Fiat balance settled through a card network or bank |
| Account requirement | Wallet and payment authorization; no protocol-level account or API key is required | Merchant account, customer profile, card details or subscription record is common |
| Chargebacks | On-chain payment generally does not provide a card-style chargeback; disputes must be handled by the service or contract | Card networks provide established dispute and chargeback processes |
| Network support | Depends on the x402 implementation and supported blockchain | Depends on the card network and merchant processor |
| Controls and compliance | Requires wallet limits, key security, monitoring and applicable identity or sanctions controls | Processor controls, card rules and recurring-billing safeguards are more established |
What the refill trend means for builders
For service providers, the data suggests that a usable x402 endpoint needs more than a payment contract. Providers must publish precise 402 terms, verify signed authorizations reliably, return a response only after the required payment state is confirmed and monitor abnormal loops. At sub-dollar prices, uptime, latency and fraud detection can matter more than checkout design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For agent operators, the critical controls are an isolated wallet, a spending ceiling, an automatic refill rule, asset and network restrictions, and logs that connect each payment to a request and result. A wallet that can refill indefinitely is an operational risk: a faulty prompt, compromised key or looping tool call can drain its balance quickly.

The broader market signal is captured by two observations quoted by Chainalysis. Hoolie Tejwani, head of Coinbase Ventures, said, “AI agents are becoming economic actors where every agent is effectively a new ‘user’ of the blockchain.” Will Su, head of digital-assets research at BlackRock, described “AI agents potentially creating meaningful demand for frequent, low-value payments around the clock.” Circle summarized the division of labor this way: “card rails for consumer-prompted agent payments, stablecoin rails for machine-to-machine settlements that are too small for card economics.”
The 89.3% figure supports the idea that some agents are becoming recurring crypto spenders. It does not settle whether the activity is economically productive. That answer depends on how much of the volume survives independent-counterparty checks, produces useful services and remains viable after wallet, network and compliance costs.
