AI agent testing adds behavioral evaluation to familiar software testing; it does not replace unit, integration, API, or security tests. Keep exact assertions for deterministic code, schemas, tool wrappers, and business rules. Then test realistic tasks to see whether the agent chooses safe tools, carries context, follows instructions, recovers from errors, completes handoffs, and reaches an acceptable result—even when several paths could be valid.
The practical shift is from checking only a final output to checking the outcome and the trajectory that produced it. A plausible answer can conceal an unsafe tool call, an unnecessary loop, a dropped constraint, or a failed handoff.

What changes—and what stays familiar
Traditional testing is often described as “give a controlled input and assert the expected result.” That description fits many deterministic functions, but conventional software can also contain concurrency, network failures, randomized behavior, and other nondeterminism. Conversely, an agent may contain highly deterministic components such as schema validation or a database adapter. The useful distinction is therefore one of emphasis, not a strict category boundary.
Google Cloud describes the difference as evaluating a complex system’s behavior, including autonomy, reasoning, tool use, and unpredictable situations. Annie Wang and Mollie Pettit summarize the shift this way: “The first thing to understand is that evaluating an agent isn’t like traditional software testing.” In practice, you retain the familiar tests and add task-level evaluation around them.

| Axis | Traditional emphasis | Additional agent-evaluation emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatability | Assert known outputs for controlled inputs. | Allow more than one valid path while keeping task- and risk-specific acceptance criteria. |
| Scope | Function, component, API, and system behavior. | The complete task trajectory as well as the final outcome. |
| Observability | Inputs, outputs, state changes, and failures. | Model and tool calls, arguments, context, guardrails, retries, latency, and handoffs. |
| Scoring | Exact assertions and pass/fail checks. | Exact checks plus calibrated rubrics, automated graders, and human judgment. |
| Test data | Defined fixtures and regression cases. | Golden cases, representative conversations, realistic scenarios, and reviewed synthetic cases. |
| Lifecycle | Local tests and CI regression. | Local iteration, repeated evaluations after changes, staged rollout, and production monitoring. |
This comparison is a practical synthesis of current Google Cloud and OpenAI guidance, not a formal testing standard. No single score proves that an agent is generally reliable; the criteria must match its task and risk.
Why the final answer is not enough
An agent can produce a correct-looking sentence after taking the wrong actions. It might query an inappropriate system, pass an overbroad argument to a tool, expose data that should have been withheld, ignore a user’s earlier constraint, or retry a failed operation until it creates a duplicate. If a reviewer sees only the final text, these defects are invisible.
Evaluate two dimensions together:
- Outcome: Did the agent complete the user’s goal? Check correctness, completeness, coherence, policy compliance, and safety.
- Process: Did it select appropriate tools, use valid arguments, preserve relevant context, follow instructions, avoid wasteful loops, recover from errors, and hand work to the right agent or person?
Process checks should be proportional to risk. A low-impact brainstorming assistant may need only quality and instruction-following checks. An agent that changes records, moves money, makes eligibility decisions, or sends external messages needs strict authorization, data-handling, and side-effect checks for every relevant step.

Keep the familiar test layers
Unit tests for deterministic code and agent components
Unit tests remain the fastest way to catch defects in code the model does not control. Isolate parsing, data transformations, business rules, authentication, output schemas, and guardrails. Test each tool wrapper with valid, malformed, missing, and boundary inputs. Verify that an invalid date, identifier, permission, or amount is rejected before the underlying service is called.
For a tool function, assert the exact request shape, authorization decision, timeout behavior, and error mapping. Test that a successful response is converted into the schema the agent expects and that a service failure becomes a safe, actionable error rather than an invented result. These tests are precise and cheap, but they cannot establish that the complete agent will choose that tool at the right moment in a realistic conversation.

Integration and workflow tests for realistic tasks
Run multi-step tasks through the agent, its tools, and dependent services. Use controlled or simulated environments where possible so that you can exercise timeouts, rate limits, malformed responses, stale records, and permission failures without disturbing production systems. Verify both the acceptable end state and important intermediate actions.
A workflow case should specify the starting state, user request, available tools, permitted side effects, and what counts as success. For example, a support agent might be required to verify identity, look up an order, offer only eligible remedies, and request confirmation before issuing a refund. Several tool sequences could satisfy that task; an unapproved refund or skipped identity check could not.

Trace review and grading
Preserve a trace for each run. OpenAI’s agent-evaluation documentation describes traces as records of model calls, tools, guardrails, and handoffs for one run. Review representative traces for wrong tool selection, unsuitable arguments, dropped context, repeated calls, hidden policy violations, and poor recovery—even when the final answer appears acceptable.
Move from isolated trace inspection to repeatable datasets and evaluation runs when you need to compare a prompt, model, tool, or routing change over time. A trace is evidence about one execution; a dataset-based run shows whether a change improves a population of tasks.
Human review for high-impact or nuanced judgments
Domain experts are still needed when correctness depends on nuance, policy interpretation, tone, or consequences that are difficult to encode. Human review is slower and more expensive than automated checks, but it is useful for creating reference decisions and calibrating graders. Sample cases where an automated score and an expert decision disagree, investigate the rubric, and revise it when the disagreement reveals an ambiguity.

Production evaluation and monitoring
Development tests cannot cover every live input. Use rapid evaluations while iterating, scheduled dataset-based regression runs, and continuous monitoring of representative production behavior. A staged release—sandbox, canary, then wider production exposure—limits the impact of an unnoticed regression. Monitor task success, unsafe or unauthorized actions, escalation and handoff rates, repeated retries, latency, and tool errors, with alerts appropriate to the risk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Define what “acceptable” means before you run the agent
Write an outcome contract
State the user goal in observable terms. “Help with a return” is too vague; “identify the order, verify that it is within the return window, present eligible options, and obtain confirmation before creating a return” is testable. Include prohibited outcomes, required disclosures, escalation conditions, and side effects that must never occur.
Separate exact assertions from qualitative criteria
Use exact assertions wherever the property is objective:
- The output validates against the required JSON schema.
- The tool argument contains the authenticated customer identifier, not a value taken from untrusted text.
- No write operation occurs before confirmation.
- The final state contains the expected record, status, or ticket identifier.
- The agent stops after a defined retry limit and reports the failure.
Use a rubric or grader for qualities such as relevance, explanation quality, coherence, or whether the response respects a nuanced policy. Define score levels with examples. A grader should not be allowed to award a passing score merely because the final prose sounds confident when the trace shows an unsafe action.
Make risk part of the criterion
Weight failures by consequence. A harmlessly verbose answer and an unauthorized database write should not count as equivalent errors. For high-risk actions, use hard gates: any violation of authorization, privacy, safety, or required human approval fails the case regardless of other scores. Do not collapse unrelated dimensions into one number unless the weighting and fail conditions are explicit.

A repeatable evaluation loop
- Define the task and constraints. Document the user goal, allowed tools, data boundaries, side effects, escalation rules, and safety or policy requirements.
- Build objective checks and reference cases. Keep exact assertions for schemas, permissions, state changes, and other mechanically verifiable properties. Have subject-matter experts review reference cases for expected behavior.
- Add realistic multi-turn scenarios. Include missing information, conflicting instructions, corrections, long context, ambiguous requests, and interruptions. Simulation or synthetic generation can broaden coverage, but review generated cases because they may be incomplete or biased.
- Run the agent in an observable environment. Store model messages, tool names and arguments, results, guardrail decisions, retries, handoffs, timing, and final output. Redact sensitive data according to your retention policy.
- Score outcome and trajectory. Apply exact assertions and rubric-based graders to the appropriate fields. Compare automated judgments with human decisions on a sample and adjust the rubric when they diverge.
- Group failures by cause. Distinguish prompt or instruction defects from tool-schema errors, retrieval problems, routing mistakes, context loss, service failures, and evaluator mistakes. Change one relevant factor at a time when practical.
- Rerun the same evaluation set. Confirm that the fix addresses the original failures without creating regressions elsewhere. Keep a versioned record of the model, prompt, tools, policies, dataset, and evaluator configuration.
- Release in stages and keep watching. Start in a sandbox, expose a small canary population, then expand only when safeguards and monitoring behave as expected. Add representative live failures to the next evaluation set after removing or protecting sensitive data.
Build test data that represents real conversations
A small collection of idealized one-turn prompts will overstate reliability. Cover the distribution of work the agent is expected to perform:
- Common successful requests and less frequent but important edge cases.
- Multi-turn corrections, follow-up questions, and changes of mind.
- Ambiguous language that should trigger clarification rather than a guess.
- Prompt injection, conflicting instructions, and untrusted content returned by tools.
- Unavailable services, slow responses, partial results, expired credentials, and duplicate events.
- Different user roles, permissions, locales, data formats, and accessibility needs.
- Cases that require refusal, escalation, or a human handoff.
Keep a set of “golden” cases with expert-reviewed expected outcomes and prohibited actions. Synthetic cases can help bootstrap a larger set, but generated prompts and expected answers require review for missing scenarios, unrealistic assumptions, and systematic bias. Protect personal and confidential information when creating fixtures and traces.
Test multi-agent systems as a system
Testing each specialist in isolation is necessary but insufficient. The overall workflow must select the right specialist, pass the relevant context, preserve authorization, and interpret the handoff correctly. A planner that sends a request to the wrong specialist can make every individually competent agent look reliable while the product fails.
For each handoff, check the destination, the structured payload, omitted or redacted fields, identity and permission context, return format, timeout behavior, and recovery path. Include cases in which the specialist declines, returns incomplete information, or becomes unavailable. Grade the user-visible outcome and the coordination trace; do not award a pass solely because every agent’s local unit tests succeed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiagnose common failures
The final response is good, but the trace is unsafe
Look for an unauthorized or unnecessary tool call, an argument assembled from untrusted text, or a side effect performed before confirmation. Add a hard assertion or guardrail at the boundary where the risk occurs, then retain a regression case that would have exposed it.
Best Value
The agent loops or retries excessively
Inspect whether the tool reports errors in a form the model can understand, whether retry limits are enforced in code, and whether the agent has a clear escalation path. Test transient and permanent failures separately; a retry that helps a timeout may worsen a validation error.
The agent loses an earlier constraint
Use a multi-turn case that introduces the constraint, adds distractors, and asks for an action later. Inspect context construction and memory retrieval, not just the final text. Assert that the required field or policy decision is present at the tool boundary.
An automated grader disagrees with experts
Review the disagreement set. The rubric may be underspecified, the reference answer may permit several valid forms, or the grader may be overvaluing fluent language. Add positive and negative examples, clarify hard-fail conditions, and continue sampling human judgments rather than treating the grader as ground truth.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A change improves one task and harms another
Run the complete versioned evaluation set after every prompt, model, tool, routing, or policy change. Segment results by task type, risk level, user role, and failure cause so that an aggregate score does not hide a serious regression in a smaller group.
Where managed evaluation tools fit
Managed services for tracing, grading, dataset evaluation, and online monitoring can reduce the work of collecting runs and comparing versions. They are implementation aids, not proof that a workflow is safe or that one platform is universally best. Features, API surfaces, regions, and preview status change, so verify current product documentation before adopting a specific service.
Regardless of tooling, retain ownership of the task definition, risk thresholds, test data, rubric, privacy controls, and release decision. A dashboard cannot compensate for an incomplete acceptance contract or unrepresentative cases.
Use risk-management guidance without confusing it with a test standard
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) 1.0 was released on January 26, 2023. NIST describes it as voluntary guidance for incorporating trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use, and evaluation, and notes that the framework is being revised. It can help teams identify risks and set evaluation objectives; it is not a mandatory software-testing standard and does not prescribe a universal agent score.
A concise decision rule
If a behavior is deterministic and local, test it with conventional unit or component assertions. If success depends on several calls, context decisions, recovery, or coordination, add a workflow evaluation with traces. If quality is subjective or high-impact, use a reviewed rubric and human calibration. If the agent is deployed, repeat the evaluations after changes and monitor live behavior through staged exposure. The result is an expanded testing practice: precise checks where precision is possible, and structured behavioral evidence where an agent can take multiple valid paths.
