There is no evidence-based overall winner among DART, Garak and PyRIT. They represent different testing workflows: Garak scans an LLM or LLM-based system with probes; PyRIT packages configurable generative-AI risk scenarios and repeatable red-team playbooks; Vijil’s Diamond Adaptive Red Teaming for Agents (DART) is a commercial system that Vijil says adapts attacks across multiple turns while exercising an agent’s tools and memory.
Choose based on the behavior you must test. Use Garak when you need probe-driven failure discovery, PyRIT when you need configurable scenario campaigns with saved results, and DART when your primary concern is an agent acting over time in its real environment. The available material supports a workflow and scope comparison, not a controlled head-to-head ranking.

What each approach is designed to test
Garak: probe-based vulnerability scanning
Garak is an open-source LLM vulnerability scanner. Its documented workflow runs a collection of probes against an LLM or another LLM-based system, then reports the prompt and response associated with a detected failure. The project describes a growing, community-maintained probe collection rather than a fixed one-time test suite.
Probe categories cover failure modes such as hallucination, data leakage, prompt injection, misinformation, toxicity generation and jailbreaks. In practical terms, Garak is closest to a scanner: select probes, send their test prompts to the target, inspect the resulting failures and retain the evidence for remediation.

The scanner model is useful when the target is a model endpoint or a relatively bounded application. It can expose unsafe completions and preserve the exact exchange that triggered one. That evidence is valuable to developers because a finding includes both the attempted prompt and the model’s response, rather than only a pass/fail label.
PyRIT: a framework for configurable risk scenarios
PyRIT (Python Risk Identification Tool for generative AI) is Microsoft’s open-source framework for proactively identifying risks in generative-AI systems. Its scanner documentation lists several families, including adaptive tests, Microsoft AI Red Team playbooks, benchmarks, Foundry-related tests and Garak-inspired scenarios. The latest scanner reference identified for this comparison is version 1.1.0; scenario names and capabilities can change as the project evolves.
Microsoft describes a scenario as a pre-packaged red-teaming playbook: a repeatable command that produces a result teams can save, share and compare. That makes PyRIT a framework for organizing campaigns, not merely a bag of prompts. A team can select a scenario, configure the target and relevant parameters, run the campaign, and preserve the output as part of its security record.
PyRIT’s Garak-inspired scenarios demonstrate the breadth of that approach. The documented catalog includes prompt-injection and web-injection tests, credential-like output tests, system-prompt extraction, package hallucination, audio attacks and visual jailbreaks. These are scenario families, not a guarantee that every test runs with identical settings or is enabled by default. Some require a specified dataset, attack technique or prompt cap.
Vijil Diamond DART: adaptive red teaming for agents
Vijil announced Diamond Adaptive Red Teaming for Agents (DART) on October 7, 2026. Vijil describes it as a commercial capability within its Diamond platform that uses multiple adversarial agents and adapts tactics across turns, episodes and engagements.
The claimed target is an agent operating in its actual environment, not only a single model call. Vijil says DART can exercise tool use, memory and multi-turn behavior. That matters for systems that retrieve confidential information, call external services, write records or take other consequential actions after a sequence of interactions.

How the testing workflows differ
1. A scanner starts with a probe
Garak’s unit of work is a probe. A probe embodies a failure mode or attack idea and sends one or more prompts to the target. The output is a finding when the response meets the probe’s failure condition. This is efficient for broad first-pass coverage: a team can select relevant probe groups and quickly identify model behaviors that deserve investigation.
The resulting evidence is concrete. For each detected failure, Garak reports the prompt and response associated with it. Engineers can then reproduce that exchange, determine whether a system prompt, filter or downstream component changed the result, and turn the case into a regression test.
2. A framework starts with a scenario
PyRIT’s scenario model adds campaign structure around individual attacks. A scenario can encode the target type, attack technique, data source and stopping conditions, then produce a result that the team saves and shares. This is useful when security testing is a recurring activity rather than a one-off scan.
Do not assume that all PyRIT scenarios have the same execution cost. The documentation identifies explicit requirements for some tests, including a dataset, a selected technique or a prompt cap. Audio and visual jailbreak scenarios also imply media-capable targets and suitable input handling. Before comparing results, record the scenario name, version, target configuration, dataset, technique, prompt limit and other parameters that affected the run.

3. An adaptive agent test starts with the environment
DART is described around the agent and its environment. Instead of treating each request as independent, Vijil says its adversarial agents adapt tactics over multiple turns, episodes and engagements. That model is intended to reveal whether an agent gradually discloses data, misuses a tool, preserves an unsafe instruction in memory or reaches a harmful action only after a chain of apparently harmless steps.

Because the attack changes in response to the agent, a DART result should include the full episode context: initial objective, intermediate messages, tools offered, tool outputs, memory state, permissions and final action. A single successful or unsuccessful prompt is not enough to characterize a multi-turn finding.
What PyRIT’s Garak-inspired coverage adds
PyRIT’s Garak-inspired catalog is not simply a second name for Garak. It places related attack ideas inside PyRIT’s scenario and result-management workflow. The documented families include:
- Prompt injection: attempts to override or manipulate the model’s intended instructions.
- Web injection: attacks that introduce hostile instructions through web content or retrieved material.
- Credential-like outputs: checks for responses that resemble secrets, credentials or other sensitive values.
- System-prompt extraction: attempts to induce disclosure of hidden instructions.
- Package hallucination: tests for invented software packages or dependencies, a risk when generated output is used in development workflows.
- Audio attacks: tests that use audio input or output paths where the target supports them.
- Visual jailbreaks: image-based attempts to bypass safety behavior in multimodal systems.
Those names describe attack families, not universal defaults. A scenario may require a particular dataset, attack technique or prompt cap, and the target must support the modality being tested. A fair comparison therefore reports exactly which scenarios ran and under what configuration instead of claiming that PyRIT automatically covers every listed category.
The Tool Desk

Prompt injection is a cross-cutting use case, but the right method depends on whether the target is a single model call or a tool-using agent.
For a model or bounded application
- Define the protected behavior. Write down which instructions, data and actions must remain authoritative. Without this baseline, a scanner can identify unusual output but cannot establish that the output violated a requirement.
- Select probe coverage. In Garak, choose prompt-injection probes and any adjacent categories relevant to the application, such as data leakage or jailbreaks.
- Run against a controlled target. Use a test account and non-production data. Capture model version, system instructions, filters and runtime settings with the run.
- Inspect the evidence. Review the reported prompt and response, then reproduce the exchange to distinguish a deterministic failure from a transient one.
- Convert confirmed failures into regression cases. Keep the exact prompt, expected safe behavior and any guardrail change so the test can be rerun after updates.
For a tool-using or retrieval-augmented agent
- Map every instruction channel. Include system and developer messages, user input, retrieved documents, web pages, tool results and memory entries.
- Choose a scenario that matches the channel. PyRIT’s prompt-injection and web-injection scenarios are useful starting points when untrusted content can influence the agent.
- Limit privileges. Run with synthetic records and the minimum tool permissions needed to demonstrate the behavior.
- Record the complete trajectory. Save injected content, intermediate reasoning-visible messages where available, tool calls, tool responses, memory writes and the final action.
- Classify impact, not just text. A refusal that still causes an unauthorized tool call is a failure; so is silent memory contamination that affects a later turn.
DART is the most directly aligned of the three with the last case as Vijil describes it, because its stated scope includes adaptive multi-turn attacks, tool use and memory. That is a vendor-described distinction, not proof that it will find every agent flaw or outperform other configurations.
Which tool can test an agent’s tool use and memory?
Among the reviewed descriptions, DART is the only offering explicitly presented as targeting tool use and memory together with multi-turn behavior in the agent’s environment. That makes it the clearest fit when the security question is behavioral: can an adversary steer the agent over several interactions into an unsafe tool call or persistent memory change?

PyRIT can still be valuable for this class of system when a documented scenario matches the attack path. Its framework lets a team package a repeatable playbook, configure the target and save the result. The practical question is whether the selected scenario exercises the required tool and memory boundaries; the existence of a scenario catalog alone does not guarantee that it does.
Recommended Free Tools
Garak remains useful for the model-facing layer inside the same agent. Its probes can expose prompt injection, leakage, jailbreak and other unsafe response behavior before those weaknesses are combined with tools. A layered program may therefore use Garak for model-level screening, PyRIT for repeatable scenario campaigns and an adaptive agent test for end-to-end episodes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repeatability, scoring and evidence
Make the test configuration part of the result
Two runs are not comparable if they used different models, system prompts, tools, datasets, attack techniques, prompt limits or safety settings. For every run, record the target identifier and version, date, scenario or probe, configuration, input data, permissions and observed outcome.
Separate discovery from measurement
Probe scanners and adaptive attacks are excellent at finding cases that deserve attention. A discovered case is not automatically a statistically valid score. If a team reports a rate, define the denominator, success condition, number of attempts, sampling method and environment. PyRIT’s repeatable-command design supports disciplined records, but Microsoft’s description does not establish that results from different organizations are interchangeable.
Preserve the complete trace
For single-turn findings, retain the prompt and response. For scenarios and agent episodes, retain the configuration and trajectory as well. This allows developers to reproduce the issue, security teams to verify remediation and auditors to understand what was actually tested.
Understanding DART’s published benchmark claims
Vijil’s October 7, 2026 launch announcement reports a 1.5× attack success rate versus its closest competitor on the DecodingTrust-Agent benchmark and success on nine of twelve enterprise agent tasks. Both figures are company-reported in that announcement. No independent benchmark report was identified to verify them, so they should not be presented as independently established results or attributed to the benchmark publisher.
Best Value
The figures also need context before they can guide a purchase or architecture decision. “Attack success rate” depends on the attack definition, target configuration, number of trials and scoring method. “Nine of twelve tasks” is a small task count and does not describe which tasks were used, how they were weighted or whether the environments match yours. Ask for the underlying test protocol, raw results and reproducible conditions before treating either number as predictive.
Vijil founder and CEO Vin Sharma summarized the company’s position this way: “Your custom AI agent that can access your confidential data and take consequential action on its own requires a comprehensive and customized approach to quality control.” That is a vendor executive’s view, not an independent standard or recommendation.
Choosing a testing approach by need
| Your main question | Best starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the model produce known unsafe behaviors? | Garak | Probe-driven scanning reports the prompt and response tied to failures. | Probe coverage, target integration, rate limits and how findings are exported. |
| Can we run named attack campaigns repeatedly and retain results? | PyRIT | Scenarios package tests as repeatable commands with saveable and shareable results. | Scenario prerequisites, datasets, techniques, prompt caps and result schema. |
| Can an adversary manipulate an agent across turns, tools and memory? | DART, subject to validation | Vijil explicitly describes adaptive multi-turn testing in the agent’s environment. | Environment integration, permissions, episode logs, coverage and independent evidence. |
| Do we need layered assurance? | Combine methods | Model-level probes, repeatable scenarios and end-to-end adaptive tests expose different failure surfaces. | Deduplicate findings and map each result to the control or component it tests. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Declaring a winner from unlike workflows. A probe scanner, a scenario framework and an adaptive service do not produce equivalent measurements. Compare the question each one answers.
- Assuming a catalog equals default coverage. PyRIT’s documented attack families may have prerequisites or configuration limits. Report what actually ran.
- Testing only the chat response. For agents, inspect tool calls, retrieved content, memory writes and resulting state changes.
- Using production privileges. Isolate accounts, data and tools so a successful attack cannot create real-world damage.
- Ignoring version drift. Garak’s probe collection and PyRIT’s scenario catalog grow and change. Pin versions and record the date of each campaign.
- Treating vendor benchmarks as independent proof. DART’s published figures come from Vijil’s announcement. Request methodology and replication evidence.
- Reporting a score without a denominator. State the number of attempts, success definition, target configuration and sampling method.
A practical evaluation plan
- Inventory the system. List models, prompts, retrieval sources, tools, memory stores, modalities, data classifications and user roles.
- Set test boundaries. Use synthetic or disposable data, define prohibited actions and create a recovery path for altered state.
- Run a model-level baseline. Use relevant Garak probes to identify basic injection, leakage, jailbreak and hallucination weaknesses.
- Build repeatable scenarios. Use PyRIT scenarios for attack families that match your channels, documenting datasets, techniques and prompt limits.
- Exercise end-to-end behavior. If multi-turn tool and memory risk is central, evaluate an adaptive agent test such as the DART capability described by Vijil, with full episode logging.
- Validate findings manually. Reproduce each high-impact result, confirm the security boundary that failed and remove accidental environmental causes.
- Retest after remediation. Keep the same configurations where possible, then add the fixed case to regression coverage.
The resulting program is more defensible than selecting a tool by a single headline metric. It shows which layer was tested, what evidence was captured and which risks remain outside the chosen method’s scope.
