AI Agent Hardware Requirements for a VPS: CPU, RAM and Storage Guide

The right VPS size depends first on where the language model runs. An agent that calls a hosted model mainly needs CPU for orchestration, RAM for tools and workers, reliable networking, and persistent SSD storage. An agent that runs its model locally must also hold model data in memory and on disk, and may need a GPU.

Use the profiles below as starting points, not performance guarantees. Your tool count, browser workload, context length, concurrent requests, database size and logging policy determine the final size.

Start by deciding where inference happens

Hosted-model agent

In a hosted setup, the VPS runs the agent loop: it receives a task, calls the model provider over the network, executes tools, stores state, and returns results. The model’s CPU, RAM and (where applicable) GPU are in the provider’s environment rather than on your VPS. That is why an API-driven agent generally needs no GPU of its own.

This design is usually the simplest starting point. You still need enough CPU for tool calls and browser workers, enough RAM for the agent process and databases, and dependable outbound connectivity. A private network, custom binaries or strict data-residency requirements can justify placing more of the stack on infrastructure you control.

Local-inference agent

With local inference, the VPS also loads model weights and runs the inference engine. RAM or VRAM then becomes the limiting resource. Quantization changes the amount of memory a model needs, while a longer context window and more simultaneous requests increase the working set. Container images, model downloads, vector indexes and temporary files add disk consumption independently of the model’s runtime memory.

A local model can therefore turn a small application server into a memory- and storage-heavy system. Size the inference host separately when practical; keeping orchestration and inference apart makes it easier to scale agents without allowing one workload to starve the other.

VPS starting points by workload

The following values combine the cited deployment guidance with a conservative planning baseline. They are starting configurations, not guaranteed throughput or latency figures.

Workload Starting CPU Starting RAM Storage planning GPU/VRAM
One development agent using a hosted API 2 vCPU 4 GB 20 GB SSD as a practical application-and-log floor (TechRadar Pro, 2026) Usually unnecessary
Small production agent with tools and a database 4 vCPU 8 GB SSD with headroom for images, logs, indexes and backups Usually unnecessary
Local 7B-class model plus agent runtime 4–8 vCPU 16 GB or more as a planning baseline; verify the selected model At least 50 GB free is a safer starting point for local-model data Depends on model and quantization
Several concurrent agents, browser workers or larger local models Scale vCPU and RAM with concurrency; isolate inference when needed Measure peak working-set memory Add separate capacity for models, databases and backups A dedicated GPU or external inference may be appropriate

The 16 GB local-model figure is a planning recommendation derived from the cited architecture and storage guidance, not a vendor guarantee. Docker’s 2026 official agentic-AI tutorial gives an example local stack with minimum requirements of 3.5 GB VRAM and 2.31 GB storage; that is sufficient only for that example application, not for every model or agent.

How CPU affects an agent VPS

What the cores actually run

For a hosted-model agent, CPU time is spent on the agent loop, prompt and tool serialization, HTTP and database operations, document parsing, embeddings, browser automation and any application code. A single idle agent can fit on a small instance, but bursts from parallel tool calls or browser tabs create short CPU spikes.

When to add vCPUs

  • Stay near the development profile when one person is testing one agent and tools run mostly sequentially.
  • Move to the small-production profile when the agent serves users continuously, maintains a database, or runs several tools in parallel.
  • Add cores when CPU utilization remains high during normal peaks, browser workers queue, or response time rises even though the model provider is healthy.
  • For local inference, benchmark the selected runtime with the intended model. More vCPUs can improve prompt processing and multiple requests, but they do not replace the memory or VRAM that the model requires.

Do not infer a fixed token rate from a vCPU count. The available processor generation, virtualization policy, model, context length and concurrency all change the result.

How much RAM an AI agent needs

Hosted API memory budget

RAM must cover the agent process, language-runtime overhead, browser or worker processes, database connections, caches, vector-search services and the operating system. Conversation history and retrieved documents can make individual requests larger, while concurrent requests multiply the active working set.

Monitor peak, not just average, memory. A VPS that appears comfortable while idle can begin swapping when several browser sessions, document conversions or tool calls overlap. Swapping usually produces unpredictable latency; if it appears during normal peaks, increase RAM or reduce concurrency before adding more CPU.

Local-model memory budget

Local inference adds model weights, the inference runtime, key-value cache for the context window and buffers for active requests. Quantized variants reduce weight memory but can differ in quality and runtime behavior. A longer context and more simultaneous generations require additional memory even when the model file itself is unchanged.

Use the selected model’s documented memory requirement, then reserve room for the agent, tools and operating system. The 7B-class planning row in the table is deliberately conservative because a model’s label alone does not specify quantization, context length or concurrency.

Storage: plan for more than the model file

What consumes disk

  • Model weights and alternate quantization variants.
  • Container images, layers and package caches.
  • Vector databases, document indexes and uploaded source files.
  • Conversation transcripts, tool output, browser artifacts and application logs.
  • Database snapshots, model backups and temporary files created during updates.

For a hosted-model development deployment, the cited TechRadar Pro guidance treats 20 GB of SSD as a practical floor for the application and logs. It is not a promise that every stack will fit. Production needs unallocated headroom so image updates, indexes and log growth do not fill the volume.

For an Ollama-oriented local stack, SUSE’s 2025 AI requirements specify at least 50 GB of free disk space for container images and data processed by Ollama. Treat “free” literally: a volume that starts with 50 GB but is already partly occupied does not meet that condition.

Why SSD type matters

Use persistent SSD storage so model files, indexes and logs survive a reboot or host move. NVMe SSD storage is a sensible choice for self-hosted AI because model loading, container extraction and vector-index access are storage-intensive. Capacity and backup policy still matter more than the interface name; a fast disk that runs out of space is an outage.

Do you need a GPU?

An API-only agent normally does not. The provider executes the model, while the VPS handles orchestration and tools. A GPU becomes relevant when the VPS itself performs inference, image generation, speech processing or another accelerator-heavy task.

VRAM must fit the chosen model, its quantization, context cache and concurrent requests. A card meeting an example application’s minimum is not automatically suitable for a larger model. If the host has no compatible GPU, a CPU-only runtime may work for development but can deliver substantially higher latency; measure before committing to a user-facing workload.

A practical sizing procedure

  1. Choose the inference location. Decide whether a hosted provider or your own VPS will execute the model. This single choice determines whether model RAM and VRAM belong in the VPS budget.
  2. List every process. Include the agent service, tool servers, browser workers, database, vector store, reverse proxy, monitoring and scheduled jobs.
  3. Estimate concurrency. Count simultaneous users, agent runs, browser sessions and model requests. Size for the busiest normal period rather than the quiet average.
  4. Set a storage inventory. Add application files, container layers, model variants, source documents, indexes, logs and backups. Keep operational headroom for upgrades.
  5. Deploy the smallest appropriate profile. Use the development row for testing or the production row for a modest always-on service; choose the local-model row only after checking the model’s own requirements.
  6. Load-test representative tasks. Exercise the longest prompts, largest documents, browser actions and parallel tool calls you expect. Record CPU, peak RSS memory, disk usage, request latency and error rates.
  7. Resize by the bottleneck. Add RAM for out-of-memory events or swapping, vCPUs for sustained compute saturation, storage for volume pressure, and GPU/VRAM or a separate inference host when local generation is the constraint.

Scaling patterns for common deployments

Personal development

Use a hosted model and keep tools lightweight. A small two-vCPU, 4 GB development profile is the cited starting point; stop unused browser workers and rotate logs so the disk floor remains useful.

Small production service

For an always-on agent with a database and several tools, begin with the four-vCPU, 8 GB profile from the deployment guidance. Put the database and backups on persistent SSD capacity with room for growth, and watch peak memory during the busiest workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local 7B-class model

Plan around the 4–8 vCPU and 16 GB-or-more row only after verifying the exact model and quantization. Reserve at least the cited free-disk allowance for model and container data, then add space for indexes, logs and backups. If inference competes with browser workers, move it to a separate host or add an accelerator.

Multiple agents and browser workers

Concurrency is the sizing variable. Isolate inference, cap worker counts, and queue non-urgent jobs so a burst cannot exhaust RAM. Scale the database and vector store with the number of documents and active sessions rather than treating them as free add-ons.

Failure modes and fixes

Out-of-memory kills or swapping

Check peak resident memory and identify whether model cache, browser processes, or concurrent requests caused the spike. Reduce concurrency or context length as a temporary measure, then add RAM or separate inference.

Disk-full errors

Inspect model directories, Docker layers, vector indexes and logs. Remove only unused images and obsolete model variants, configure log rotation, move persistent data to a larger volume, and verify that backups are not stored on the same nearly full disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High latency with low model-provider latency

Measure CPU saturation, run queues, browser worker contention and database wait time on the VPS. More vCPUs help only when local compute is the bottleneck; otherwise investigate network reliability, tool timeouts or serialization overhead.

GPU allocation failures

Confirm that the VPS actually exposes a compatible accelerator and enough VRAM for the selected model and context. If it does not, use a hosted model, a separate GPU host or a smaller quantized model rather than assuming a CPU-only fallback will meet production latency.

Privacy, control and total capacity

Hosted inference reduces local hardware requirements and operational work. Self-hosting can be worthwhile when the agent must run inside a private network, use custom software, or keep model traffic under your control. OpenAI’s architecture documentation describes self-hosted environments in those terms. The trade-off is that you assume responsibility for model storage, patching, backups, GPU capacity and performance testing.

Compare VPS options on inference location, expected concurrency and latency, privacy and network controls, persistent SSD capacity, backup design and the ability to resize or attach a separate inference host. A nominally cheap instance can become unsuitable once model disks, indexes, snapshots and monitoring are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For a hosted-model agent, begin with the small development profile and move to the modest production profile as users, tools and databases become continuous workloads. For local inference, plan memory and storage around the exact model and concurrency, reserve substantially more disk for containers and data, and add GPU/VRAM only when the model runtime requires it. Validate the choice with a representative load test; no vCPU or RAM number alone guarantees agent speed or concurrency.
