A conventional DNS name is governed by contracts among a registrant, registrar and registry operator. An ENS-native .eth name is controlled by a wallet through smart contracts. A DNS name imported into ENS still depends on its conventional registration. A provider-specific blockchain name may remain in a wallet or token after its company closes, while the resolvers, gateways or applications needed to use it can disappear.
“AI agent domain” is not a universally deployed namespace. It may mean an ordinary DNS name for an agent endpoint, a blockchain naming product, or a proposed discovery protocol. Identify the exact system before assuming who owns a name or whether it will continue resolving.

What “AI agent domain” and “crypto domain” can mean
AI agent domains are an ambiguous term
An AI agent might expose a website or API at an ordinary DNS name such as agent.example. In that case, the name follows the same registrar, registry and DNS rules as any other domain. A vendor may instead issue a blockchain-based name, or a directory may assign structured identifiers intended to help software discover agents.

The Agent Name Service paper, dated May 15, 2025, proposes a DNS-inspired directory with structured names and public-key-infrastructure (PKI) identity. The AgentDNS paper, dated May 28, 2025, proposes root-domain naming and discovery for large-language-model agents. They are research proposals, not evidence of one broadly deployed standard. A label from either design would not by itself prove that an agent exists, is operated by the claimed party, or is safe to call.

Crypto domains use systems outside the global DNS root
ICANN’s October 2024 technical overview describes blockchain name systems as systems associated with a blockchain that can use labels not delegated as top-level domains in the global DNS. Such names may resolve only through a particular chain, resolver, browser, wallet, application or gateway. “Crypto domain” therefore describes a family of designs, not one ownership model or reachability guarantee.
The control stack: five different layers
A domain name, its registrar, its DNS service, its web host and its resolver can all be operated by different organizations. A failure in one layer can stop a site or agent from being reachable without transferring control of the name at another layer.

Who controls a conventional DNS name?
Registrant, registrar and registry have different jobs
The registrant’s rights and duties come from the registration agreement with the registrar. ICANN’s registration-process guidance says that fees, renewals, transfers and other terms are governed by the applicable agreement or agreements. The registrar provides the customer-facing registration service. The registry operator runs the database for the top-level domain under its agreement and policies. DNS hosting and web hosting can be supplied by entirely different companies.
To determine who controls a name, check the registrar account that holds it, the registration expiration date, the registry’s status data and the nameservers. Do not infer ownership from the company hosting the website or from the company selling the domain.

If the registrar closes
ICANN documents bulk-transfer procedures for domains sponsored by registrars that can no longer service them. A successor registrar or another approved arrangement may receive the names. The exact process depends on the affected registrar, top-level domain, notices and transfer arrangements; a shutdown does not mean every name instantly vanishes, and it is not a promise that every case follows the same timetable.
If the registry operator fails
ICANN’s registry-continuity framework includes assignment to a successor, a request-for-proposals process and a temporary emergency back-end transition. These mechanisms are intended to preserve secure and stable operation while limiting disruption. They are continuity tools, not a guarantee that every outage will have an identical result.
If a registrar is suspended or terminated
ICANN enforcement notices show that breach, suspension and termination are real operational categories. An enforcement notice alone does not establish what happens to a particular customer’s name. Check the affected top-level domain, the notice, any successor information and the available transfer instructions.

How ENS-native .eth names are controlled
Wallet signatures control the name
ENS documentation describes its registry as the core contract at the heart of ENS resolution. The registry records an owner, resolver and time-to-live (TTL) for each name. ENS support says the wallet holding a native .eth name controls it: changing the owner or records requires a signature from that wallet, and the contracts have no function to force-move the name to somebody else.
Native .eth registrations carry an annual ENS registration fee. The amount and any policy details should be checked in the current ENS registration interface rather than assumed from a generic crypto-domain price.

Wallet control is not the same as guaranteed availability
Key loss can make the owner unable to sign transactions even though the contract still records the name. A chain interruption, an unavailable resolver, a broken wallet, or the closure of a particular ENS interface can also prevent normal use. Ownership in a contract and practical resolution are separate questions.
What changes when a DNS name is imported into ENS?
ENS supports importing eligible conventional names that already exist in the ICANN-root DNS, such as a name ending in .com or .org. You must already control the DNS registration; ENS does not sell or replace it.

The ENS-side record does not require an ENS renewal, but the underlying DNS registration must remain active with its registrar. If that DNS registration expires and somebody else registers the name, the new holder can publish an _ens TXT record pointing to their wallet and refresh the ENS ownership record. In practical terms, an imported name inherits the expiration and hijack risk of conventional DNS even when its ENS record still exists.
A provider-specific blockchain example: CNS
Documentation for a CNS implementation describes its names as smart contracts on Ethereum and minted names as ERC-721 tokens. It states that the Registry contract has no administrator able to transfer a member’s name without permission. The same documentation says whitelisted minters can create names but cannot control ownership or alter a member’s records.

Those statements describe that documented contract architecture, not every blockchain naming project. Verify the deployed contract address and current implementation before relying on them. Even if a token remains in a wallet after the provider exits, the name may stop working in a browser, resolver, wallet, marketplace or website gateway that supported it. Token-level control is narrower than universal reachability.

Registrar shutdown
For a conventional name, look for the registrar’s ICANN notices and the receiving or successor registrar. Follow the documented transfer or bulk-transfer procedure, keep the registrant email and account credentials current, and do not wait until the expiration date.
Registry shutdown
A registry operator’s failure can trigger a successor assignment, a competitive transition or a temporary emergency back-end operator under ICANN’s continuity processes. The applicable top-level domain and official notice determine which route applies.
DNS-hosting shutdown
Your registration can remain valid while nameservers stop answering. Move the zone to another DNS host, recreate all records, and lower TTLs before a planned migration when possible. The available sources establish the separation between registration and DNS service, but no universal recovery time exists for an arbitrary DNS host.
Website or API-hosting shutdown
The name may still resolve correctly while the address returns errors or no agent responds. Preserve a portable copy of the site, API configuration and endpoint credentials, then repoint the DNS records to replacement infrastructure.
ENS interface or company shutdown
Closing a company interface is not automatically the same as losing a wallet-held .eth name. Continued use still requires functioning contracts, the chain, a resolver and an alternative interface capable of submitting transactions. Do not promise uninterrupted access merely because the ownership record is on-chain.
CNS vendor shutdown
If the documented CNS contract truly lacks an administrative transfer function, the vendor’s closure would not by itself move a minted token. Resolution tools, gateways, record editors and support services could nevertheless disappear, leaving ownership without a practical way to use the name.
Agent directory shutdown
For an actual agent directory, identify its registry operator, authentication keys, endpoint records, renewal and revocation rules, and export or migration process. The two 2025 agent-name papers do not establish that any production directory offers those protections.
How to compare a real naming option

| Identity and trust | Does the system authenticate the agent and endpoint, or merely provide a label? Are keys, certificates and revocation rules documented? |
A shutdown-resilience checklist
- Map every dependency. Record the registrar, registry, DNS host, web or API host, resolver, wallet and gateway separately.
- Confirm the control mechanism. Save the registration agreement or identify the wallet and contract that can change ownership and records.
- Protect renewal paths. Set calendar reminders, maintain payment methods and monitor the conventional expiration date for imported DNS names.
- Back up records and keys. Export DNS zones, agent endpoint configuration, verification records and recovery material. Store wallet recovery information offline and test that it is usable.
- Plan an alternate route. Keep a conventional DNS fallback or a second documented resolver where the application permits it. Publish how clients can verify a replacement endpoint.
- Monitor official notices. Check ICANN announcements for conventional registrars and registries, and read the current contract and governance documentation for blockchain systems.
- Test recovery before an outage. Recreate the zone, rotate endpoint credentials and resolve the name through an independent resolver so that a single vendor is not your only proof that the system works.
What a name can—and cannot—prove about an AI agent
A domain or token is an identifier, not evidence that an agent is competent, authorized or safe. Verify the endpoint’s TLS certificate, signing keys, publisher identity, permissions, data-handling policy and revocation process separately. Proposed agent naming systems add discovery and PKI concepts, but deployment, governance and adoption must be verified for the specific service you intend to use.
There is no reliable universal statistic for adoption, uptime or failure rates across these systems. Treat claims about permanence, universal browser support or guaranteed recovery as system-specific assertions that require current documentation.
