Semrush is the broader choice when you need SEO alongside PPC, social media, content operations and AI-visibility tracking. Neither is universally better. Your decision should follow the data you need, the channels your team manages, plan limits and the price shown at checkout.
Ahrefs vs. Semrush at a glance
| Decision area | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Backlinks, rankings, keyword research and content-gap work | SEO plus PPC, social media, content marketing and AI visibility |
| Google keyword index | 20.4 billion, according to Semrush’s comparison table (data as of May 2025) | 26.6 billion, according to Semrush’s comparison table (data as of May 2025) |
| SERP features tracked | 16, according to the same table (data as of May 2025) | 49+, according to the same table (data as of May 2025) |
| Historical SERP data | Back to 2015, according to the same table | Back to 2012, according to the same table |
| Backlink index | 35 trillion links, according to the same table | 43 trillion links, according to the same table |
| Best fit | SEO specialists, link builders, publishers and lean in-house teams | Agencies and marketing teams coordinating several channels |
Those index counts are vendor-published snapshots, not independent quality scores. Crawl freshness, country coverage, filters, historical depth and the limits on your plan matter more than a single headline number.
What each platform is designed to do
Ahrefs: a concentrated SEO research workflow
Ahrefs centers its product on backlink intelligence, rankings, keyword research and content analysis. Its own crawler, AhrefsBot, powers the backlink data. The platform’s Site Explorer, Content Gap and Link Intersect tools are built for examining competitors, finding sites that link to competing pages and locating topics competitors rank for that you do not.
That focus makes Ahrefs easy to justify when your work is primarily organic search: identify an opportunity, assess the pages already ranking, understand their links and build or improve content to compete.
Semrush: a wider marketing suite
Semrush positions itself as a broader stack covering AI visibility, SEO, social media, PPC and content marketing. Alongside organic keyword and backlink research, it offers paid-keyword and competitor-ad analysis, local SEO, social analytics and scheduling, content workflows and reporting.
The wider scope can reduce the number of separate tools an agency or marketing department has to operate. It also means a larger interface and more features to learn, especially if you only need backlink and content research.
Keyword research and SERP analysis
Choose Semrush for breadth across organic and paid search
Semrush is the stronger fit when keyword decisions include search intent, paid keywords, competitor ads and a wide range of SERP features. Its comparison table reports 26.6 billion Google keywords versus 20.4 billion for Ahrefs, plus 49+ SERP features versus 16. These figures are labeled as data from May 2025, so treat them as dated vendor comparisons rather than permanent specifications.
That breadth is useful for agencies preparing both SEO and PPC recommendations, or for teams that need to see how features such as ads, local results and other enhanced results affect a query.

Choose Ahrefs when traffic potential and content gaps drive the decision
Ahrefs ties keyword research closely to ranking pages, estimated traffic potential, backlinks and content-gap discovery. This is a practical workflow for deciding which topics deserve a new page, which existing page needs improvement and what authority competitors have earned.
In either product, validate important terms against the target country, language, device and current SERP. An index-size advantage does not guarantee better data for a particular niche or location.
Backlinks and link building
Ahrefs is the natural choice when link intelligence is the center of the job. Its FAQ describes backlink intelligence and keyword research as core specializations and identifies link building, competitive analysis and content-gap work as strengths. Site Explorer, Content Gap and Link Intersect support a repeatable process: inspect a competitor, find referring domains or pages you lack, then prioritize prospects that are relevant and achievable.
Semrush’s comparison table reports 43 trillion backlinks versus 35 trillion for Ahrefs. Semrush also combines backlink analysis with link-building workflows and toxic-link auditing. A larger reported index does not by itself mean more useful prospects; assess freshness, duplicate handling, filters, referring-domain context and export limits on the plan you will buy.

How to choose between the backlink workflows
- Pick Ahrefs if prospect discovery, competitor link analysis and content-gap research occupy most of your week.
- Pick Semrush if backlink work is one part of a larger SEO, PPC, local and reporting program, or if toxic-link review is part of your process.
- Test both on the same competitors before committing if a campaign depends on a small set of high-value referring domains. Compare whether each tool finds the domains, pages and link attributes you actually need.
Technical SEO and content operations
Shared fundamentals
Both platforms provide site-audit and rank-tracking capabilities. Ahrefs describes a workflow that runs from ideation and research through optimization, content-gap analysis and rank tracking, which suits a focused SEO team.
Semrush’s broader technical and content layer
Semrush lists JavaScript rendering, Core Web Vitals checks, log-file analysis, content optimization, reporting and integrations in its comparison material. Those functions are valuable for larger sites, technical teams and agencies that need one workspace for audits, recommendations and client deliverables.
Before buying, map your actual crawl requirements: JavaScript-heavy templates, log access, crawl frequency, project count, keyword volume, user seats and export needs. Both products can audit a site, but the useful choice is the one whose limits match your inventory and publishing cadence.
PPC, social media and AI visibility
Semrush has the clear advantage when paid and social channels are part of the same assignment. Its comparison lists PPC keyword research, competitor ad analysis, local SEO, social analytics, scheduling, AI-powered content creation and AI-visibility tracking.

Rank #4
Ahrefs’ core FAQ is centered on SEO, backlinks, keywords, content and rank tracking rather than a Semrush-style PPC and social suite. Ahrefs does offer adjacent capabilities through optional add-ons reported by TechRadar’s 2026 review: Brand Radar AI at $199 per month, AI Content Helper at $99 per month, Content Kit at $299 per month and Report Builder at $99 per month. These are add-on prices reported in that review, not a substitute for checking Ahrefs’ current checkout.
If your team only needs organic search, paying for cross-channel features may add complexity without improving output. If one platform must support search, ads, social publishing and AI-visibility reporting, Semrush’s breadth is the more defensible fit.
Rank tracking, reporting and team workflow
Both tools track rankings, but useful capacity depends on plan limits such as projects, keywords, locations, update cadence, users, historical retention and exports. Compare those limits against your real workload rather than comparing a headline feature list.
- Solo site or specialist workflow: prioritize fast competitor research, backlink filters, content-gap views and enough tracked keywords for your important markets.
- Agency workflow: check client project counts, multi-location tracking, scheduled reports, branded outputs, integrations and seat rules.
- Large in-house team: verify JavaScript crawling, log-file handling, Core Web Vitals, permissions, API or export access and how many domains can be monitored.
Semrush generally suits teams that need shared reporting across several marketing channels. Ahrefs is often easier to keep focused when a small SEO group owns the full research-to-ranking loop.

Semrush says subscriptions can be canceled, upgraded or downgraded at any time unless custom signed terms apply, and advertises a seven-day free trial. Confirm whether those terms apply to the checkout, country and billing cycle you select.
Calculate total cost before deciding
- List the countries, search engines, domains, keywords and reporting recipients you must support.
- Record required seats, projects, crawl limits, refresh cadence, exports and integrations.
- Add any paid modules or Ahrefs add-ons your workflow cannot avoid.
- Compare the resulting monthly total with the cost of separate PPC, social, reporting or content tools you would otherwise need.
Which tool should you buy?
Buy Ahrefs if most of these statements are true
- Your primary KPI is organic growth, not a combined SEO-and-PPC program.
- Backlink discovery, link building and competitor link analysis are daily tasks.
- Content-gap research and ranking-page analysis matter more than social publishing.
- You prefer a concentrated SEO interface and can live with plan-specific limits on seats, projects and tracking.
Buy Semrush if most of these statements are true
- You manage SEO together with PPC, competitor ads, local search or social media.
- Broad SERP-feature and paid-keyword coverage is important to planning.
- Clients or stakeholders need cross-channel dashboards, scheduling and reporting.
- Technical audits, content optimization, integrations or AI-visibility tracking belong in the same platform.
Use both when the data justifies it
A two-tool stack can make sense for a specialist SEO team that relies on Ahrefs for link and content intelligence while using Semrush for paid-search, local, social or reporting work. It is harder to justify when overlapping subscriptions will not change decisions; run the same competitor, keyword and audit tasks in both trials and keep the tool that produces actionable answers with less manual work.
A practical final decision test
- Choose five competitors and ten priority topics from your own market.
- Compare the backlink domains, ranking pages, keyword opportunities and SERP features each platform returns.
- Run a crawl of your largest important site section and inspect the issues you actually need to fix.
- Build one sample client or executive report, including any PPC, social or AI-visibility requirements.
- Price the exact tier, seats, projects, add-ons and billing cycle at checkout.
If organic link and content intelligence produces most of your decisions, choose Ahrefs. If your work spans several marketing channels and needs shared reporting, choose Semrush.
