Ahold Delhaize confirmed a security issue within its network on October 12, 2026, and said it took some systems offline as a precaution. The company said its stores remained open and serving customers. Contemporaneous reports described website outages and disruption to online shopping, loyalty services and distribution operations across parts of its business in the United States, the Netherlands and Belgium. The company had not disclosed the cause, the full scope or a restoration schedule as of October 13.

What Ahold Delhaize confirmed

In a statement issued October 12 from Zaandam, Netherlands, Ahold Delhaize said: “Ahold Delhaize is experiencing a security issue within its network. Our teams are taking steps to assess and mitigate the issue. This includes taking some systems offline to help protect them. At this time, our stores are open and serving customers.” The company also said protecting its infrastructure was a priority. Ahold Delhaize’s statement did not identify a specific technical cause or attacker.

Which grocery brands and services were reported affected?

On October 12, Cybersecurity Dive reported that websites for five U.S. banners—Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Food Lion and The Giant Company—were down. It also reported that the Netherlands-based Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall websites were offline. The report said the company had not provided a restoration timeline. Cybersecurity Dive’s account distinguished those website outages from store access: Ahold Delhaize said its stores were open, but had not detailed whether all store operations were otherwise normal.

NL Times reported disruption at Albert Heijn distribution centers, as well as unavailable online shopping and loyalty services. It also described IT disruption at Belgian Delhaize and disruption affecting U.S. chains. These operational details came from contemporaneous reporting and are not all individually confirmed in the company’s statement. NL Times’ report said availability could differ by store.

Are stores open, and what might shoppers notice?

Ahold Delhaize said stores were open and serving customers on October 12. That does not mean every location or service was operating normally. A shopper could encounter an unavailable website or app, an interruption to online orders or loyalty features, or differences in product availability. Reporting from the Netherlands said fresh items could be harder to find than frozen, bread and long-life products. That was a dated assessment, not a guarantee about any store’s current stock.

Because stock and service availability can change quickly, check the relevant store or banner’s current service notices before making a trip or relying on an online order. The reporting does not establish a reliable count of affected stores.

What is still unknown, including customer data exposure

As of October 13, Ahold Delhaize had not publicly specified the incident’s cause, attack method, responsible actor, complete scope or restoration schedule in the material available. The company’s confirmation of a network security issue does not by itself establish that ransomware was involved.

There was no confirmed finding in the available reporting that customer data was stolen in this October 2026 incident. A separate 2024 Ahold Delhaize ransomware incident was reported to have affected more than 2.2 million individuals, with regulatory notifications reported in June 2025. That historical figure concerns the earlier incident and must not be treated as a measure of exposure in October 2026. SecurityWeek’s October 13 coverage likewise described the current incident’s scope as unclear.

Is this connected to the French supermarket refrigeration attack?

No connection had been established in reporting available October 13. The separate French incident involved supermarket refrigeration-control systems; the Ahold Delhaize notice described a security issue within the company’s network. They are distinct reported incidents, and their victims, equipment and effects should not be conflated. Help Net Security’s report covered the French attack, while SecurityWeek noted that a link to the Ahold Delhaize incident was unclear.
