For Longbow 2, the best-documented “cheat” is not an unlock code: its Instant Action mode gives you an invulnerable AH-64D Longbow with unlimited chain-gun rounds, Hellfire missiles, rockets and Stinger missiles, and the manual says practice in that mode does not affect your pilot record. A reported ca.ini edit for infinite ammunition and invulnerability also circulates, but its edition, file path and reliability are unverified. No dependable unlock-code sequence is established for the original Jane’s AH-64D Longbow, Longbow 2 or Longbow Gold.
That distinction matters because “AH-64D Longbow” is used for several related releases. Apply a setting only after identifying the exact game you own, and prefer the documented game-mode option before changing a configuration file.

First identify which Longbow you have
Cheat instructions are not interchangeable across the series. The original Jane’s AH-64D Longbow, its sequel Longbow 2 and the Longbow Gold compilation can have different executables, configuration files and menu options. A setting that appears in a fan-made guide may belong to only one release, or to a particular installation build.

If the title screen, installer or manual does not clearly identify the edition, stop before editing anything. A screenshot of a menu or a file named ca.ini is not enough to prove that two installations use the same format.

Longbow 2’s documented practice option
Longbow 2’s manual describes Instant Action as a low-consequence way to fly an AH-64D Longbow. The mode supplies an invulnerable aircraft and unlimited weaponry, specifically including chain-gun ammunition, Hellfire missiles, rockets and Stinger missiles. The manual also states that Instant Action does not affect a pilot’s record.
How to use it
- Launch Longbow 2 and open the game-mode selection.
- Select Instant Action, rather than a campaign or recorded mission.
- Choose the aircraft and scenario options presented by your installation, then start the flight.
- Use the unlimited weapons to learn sight operation, target designation and weapon employment without conserving ammunition.
- Exit Instant Action when you want to return to progression or record-bearing missions.
The manual passage establishes the behavior of Instant Action, not a universal menu path for every port, patch or front end. If your copy labels the mode differently or does not show it, consult the manual for that specific release instead of importing a command from another version.

Why this is safer than a file hack
- It is a documented game feature for Longbow 2, not a setting inferred from a third-party post.
- It leaves your pilot record unaffected according to the manual.
- It avoids changing files that may be shared by missions, campaigns or multiplayer components.
- It lets you practice both flight and weapons systems while retaining the ability to return to normal realism settings.
Difficulty, flight model and realism settings
Longbow 2 also provides gameplay choices that can reduce the learning curve without enabling an undocumented cheat. The manual discusses settings for the flight model and realism, so use those controls when your goal is to understand handling rather than to become invulnerable.
A practical learning progression
- Begin in Instant Action if you need unlimited ammunition or protection while learning the cockpit and weapon workflow.
- Reduce difficulty or realism one step at a time rather than changing every option at once. This makes it clear which setting solved a problem.
- Practice basic flight, hovering, turns and target acquisition before adding weapon-system complexity.
- Restore more realistic settings after you can complete the same maneuver consistently.
A historical Longbow 2 tips article recommends lowering difficulty or using invulnerability while learning the flight model, avionics and weapons. That advice supports the training approach, but it does not establish a particular keystroke, cheat toggle or configuration line for every edition.

Keyboard and joystick setup
A joystick is optional. The Longbow 2 manual documents keyboard controls as well as joystick input and calibration, so you can begin with the keyboard and add a flight-sim joystick if that feels more natural.
Calibrate before judging the flight model
- Connect the joystick before launching the game, if your system supports the device.
- Open the game’s input or calibration controls described in the manual.
- Center the stick and follow the calibration prompts for each axis.
- Check that throttle and any assigned rudder control move through their full ranges without resting near an edge.
- Test the controls in Instant Action before attempting a campaign mission.
Do not assume that a modern joystick will work with a particular legacy installation. Compatibility depends on the operating system, emulator or wrapper and the game build. The documented fact is that Longbow 2 supports keyboard input and provides joystick calibration instructions; a specific present-day controller is not established as universally compatible.

The reported ca.ini edit
A cheat blog reports two configuration flags: infiniteammo and invulnerability. Its procedure is to back up ca.ini, open the file in a text editor, find the word cheats, and change the values below:

If you still want to test the report
- Confirm the game edition and close the game completely.
- Locate the actual
ca.iniused by that installation. Do not assume a path copied from another computer. - Make a separate backup copy, preserving the original filename and extension.
- Open the copy in a plain-text editor and search for the
cheatssection or the exact flag names. - Change only existing values from
0to1. Do not invent missing keys, rename sections or reformat unrelated lines. - Save the file as plain text, retaining the original encoding and filename.
- Launch the game and test in Instant Action or another disposable session, not in a campaign you care about.
- If the game fails to start, behaves normally or shows corrupted settings, restore the backup rather than making additional edits.
Never overwrite your only copy of the file. If no ca.ini exists, the flags are absent, or the file contains a different structure, that is evidence that the reported procedure may not apply to your installation—not a reason to create a new configuration section blindly.
What counts as an unlock code?
No unlock-code sequence was substantiated in the available documentation and historical tips. In particular, there is no verified keyboard combination that can be presented as a universal “CheatMode” or “INVULNERABLE” code for all AH-64D Longbow releases.
Those labels can describe a practice feature, a menu option or a community convention rather than a literal code. Treat a claim as unconfirmed unless it names the exact edition, gives reproducible steps and is consistent with that edition’s manual or executable behavior.

Using the manuals with legacy installations
Documentation is particularly valuable for these games because community tips often omit the edition and installation context. A DOSBox setup guide notes that some OEM versions of the original Longbow included PDF manuals and a reference card. That supports looking for the documentation bundled with your copy, but it does not prove that physical manuals, PDFs or a particular installer remain available today.
Read the manual for the executable you actually launch. Check its named game mode, input instructions and realism options before changing files. When a guide gives only a filename and two values but no release, path or test evidence, preserve it as a lead—not as a guaranteed cheat.
