The AI skill drawing attention on Wall Street is agent orchestration: coordinating multiple AI agents so they can handle different parts of a task, pass work between them, and involve people where judgment or oversight is needed. A CNBC report citing hiring-data firm Draup says references to agent orchestration in relevant bank job postings rose 1,721% in 2026. That is a change in mentions in postings—not a 1,721% increase in bank jobs or employment.

What the 1,721% figure measures

CNBC, reporting analysis from enterprise hiring-data firm Draup, said references to agent orchestration in relevant bank job postings rose 1,721% in 2026. Draup gathers information from public job posts and platforms including LinkedIn, according to the report. It did not publish the underlying dataset or a detailed methodology, so the figure should be read as a reported change in posting references rather than a count of new hires, open positions, or the entire banking labor market. The same analysis reported 139,819 AI-related listings at JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Capital One, up 49% from 2025. This is a separate measure with a stated company scope; it is not the number of agent-orchestration roles. Draup also reported a roughly $190,000 median base salary for generative AI managers, but the report provides no geography breakdown, salary distribution, or methodology. It is not a universal compensation benchmark. CNBC report, as reproduced by KhanList.

What agent orchestration involves

Rather than asking one AI system to do everything, an orchestrated workflow assigns different parts of a task to specialized agents and manages how they interact. The CNBC report gives a financial-institution example: one agent inspects raw data, another analyzes a document, and another checks regulatory compliance. Someone has to determine which agents are appropriate, define their responsibilities, select technologies, coordinate handoffs, and decide when a person must review the work.

The report describes people doing this kind of work as often being called forward-deployed engineers. They need technical skills, but also a working understanding of the business function they support. The workflow examples describe possible uses; they do not establish that every bank has deployed such systems in production. CNBC report, as reproduced by KhanList.

Why business knowledge matters

Processes that look simple can hide exceptions. Draup CEO Vijay Swaminathan points to employee vacation approvals as an example: a seemingly routine request can depend on circumstances that do not fit a basic automated rule. Recognizing those cases helps a team decide what an agent can handle and where a human should step in. The example illustrates a design challenge, not a claim about a particular bank deployment. Related skills and tools appearing in postings

Agent orchestration sits alongside technical skills for building workflows and connecting AI systems to information. Draup reported rising references to several terms in job postings, including:

Skill or term Reported change What it refers to
LangGraph 679% increase in references A framework named in the report for multi-step workflows.
LlamaIndex 291% increase in references A tool named in the report for connecting AI applications to data.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) 259% increase in references A method for supplying AI models with relevant information, such as company data.

These are changes in references reported by Draup, not comparative product evaluations or proof that one framework is preferred. The report does not provide the underlying counts or detailed measurement method. CNBC report, as reproduced by KhanList.

Why governance and risk are part of the skill set

The hiring picture in the report is not only about building AI workflows. Draup also reported increases in posting references to responsible AI (657%), AI governance (394%), and risk management (359%). It counted more than 16,000 governance-related skill references, compared with roughly 8,400 references for training, deploying, and running models. These are reported skill-reference counts, not job totals, and the article does not publish the underlying tables or full methodology. CNBC report, as reproduced by KhanList.

For an orchestrated workflow, oversight is practical as well as procedural: teams need to identify when an output affects a regulated process, when the system has reached an edge case, and when a qualified person should check the result. The report’s emphasis on governance and risk makes clear that coordinating agents is not simply a matter of connecting software components.

What the trend may mean for people building a career in AI

Swaminathan called agent orchestration “arguably the hottest skill on Wall Street.” He also described demand for people who understand both data and AI and know where to apply it. The report highlights problem solving, creativity, asking difficult questions, assertiveness, and a deeper grasp of business processes alongside technical capability. Vijay Swaminathan’s quoted statement; CNBC report, as reproduced by KhanList.

That points to a blended skill profile, rather than a single framework or course:

  • Workflow design: break a task into steps, choose which agents or tools fit each step, and plan how outputs move between them.
  • Data foundations: understand how systems access information and how approaches such as RAG can bring relevant company material into an AI workflow.
  • Business expertise: understand the process being automated well enough to spot exceptions and define acceptable outcomes.
  • Governance and risk: account for oversight, compliance, and the consequences of errors.
  • Human review: identify decisions or uncertain cases that should be escalated rather than handled automatically.

The report says banks are also using internal reskilling to meet specialized hiring needs. It cites JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon’s reference to “huge redeployment plans” as AI takes over more work; that is reported commentary, not a measured outcome or guarantee of a particular career path.
