How to use Afterpay for a Kmart Australia online order
Afterpay is presented as a payment option during Kmart Australia’s online checkout. The order must satisfy both Kmart’s checkout requirements and Afterpay’s approval rules.

- Build your cart. Add the products you want on Kmart Australia’s website and proceed to checkout. The published online order ceiling is A$2,000. Kmart does not state in the payment information whether that figure is calculated before or after every possible delivery charge, so rely on the amount displayed at checkout.
- Select Afterpay. In the payment-method section, choose Afterpay rather than a card or another listed method. Kmart’s payment FAQ identifies Afterpay as an accepted online method.
- Sign in or create an account. Checkout redirects you to Afterpay to log in or register. Enter your details accurately; Afterpay may perform identity and credit checks.
- Review the schedule. The standard Kmart Australia description is four instalments spread across six weeks. Confirm the first payment, the dates of the remaining three payments and the total before authorising the order.
- Authorise the order. If Afterpay approves the transaction, you return to Kmart’s confirmation page and receive the order details. If it declines the transaction, the order is not approved through Afterpay; use another available payment method or resolve the issue in your Afterpay account.
What the A$2,000 limit means
A$2,000 is Kmart Australia’s stated maximum for an online order using Afterpay, not a promise that every customer can spend that amount. Afterpay can apply its own account, risk and repayment limits. A customer with available Afterpay capacity may still be declined, and a smaller cart can be approved when a larger one is not.
How to use Afterpay in a Kmart store
Kmart Australia says Afterpay is accepted in all stores, including K hubs. In-store payment does not use a printed voucher or an Afterpay number typed into the register. You use the digital Afterpay Card from the Afterpay mobile app.
- Open the Afterpay app before shopping. Sign in and confirm that your account is active and that you have a payment card linked to Afterpay.
- Set up the Afterpay Card. Follow the app’s instructions to access or create the Card for in-store purchases.
- Add the Card to a digital wallet. Kmart and Afterpay describe Apple Pay and Google Pay as the wallet options for the in-store process. Complete any wallet verification requested by your phone.
- At the register, choose the wallet card. Select the Afterpay Card in Apple Pay or Google Pay, hold the phone or watch near the contactless terminal and wait for the approval signal.
- Keep the receipt. Kmart’s ordinary return rules still apply. Retaining proof of purchase makes an exchange or refund easier if the item is eligible.
The first instalment is due at purchase, with the remaining payments scheduled two weeks apart according to Kmart’s published Afterpay information. A contactless terminal, a compatible device and a wallet that supports the Card are therefore practical requirements even though the purchase is made in a physical shop.
If tap-to-pay does not work
- Check that the Afterpay Card, rather than a personal debit or credit card, is selected in the wallet.
- Make sure the phone has contactless payments enabled, is unlocked as required by the wallet and has sufficient battery.
- Ask the team member to try the terminal again; a failed tap can be a temporary terminal or connectivity problem.
- If the Card is missing from the wallet or the transaction is declined, check the Afterpay app for an account message before trying another payment method.
Using the Kmart shopping app
Kmart Australia lists Afterpay as a payment option in its shopping app. The underlying approval and instalment rules are the same as for an online checkout: the order must be eligible, the customer must be approved by Afterpay and the displayed schedule should be checked before payment. If the option is not visible, update the app, confirm that the delivery region is Australia and try the website checkout; do not assume that a missing option means the account is permanently blocked.
Who can use Afterpay at Kmart Australia?

- hold an Australian debit or credit card;
- provide a valid, verifiable email address and mobile number; and
- be able to enter a legally binding contract.
Credit checks and identity verification apply. Passing an identity check does not guarantee approval for a particular Kmart order. Afterpay can assess each transaction using its own terms, including the account’s repayment history and available spending capacity. A customer should not place an order assuming approval simply because the Afterpay option appears at checkout.
Why an otherwise eligible customer may not be approved
The official Kmart information confirms that approval is not guaranteed, but it does not provide a complete list of decline reasons. In practice, first check the details that you control: the billing information, Australian card status, mobile number, account login and any overdue instalments. If those are correct, use the message in the Afterpay app or contact Afterpay support; Kmart cannot override Afterpay’s credit decision because Afterpay operates the payment facility.

What Afterpay costs at Kmart
Kmart says there are no additional fees when scheduled payments are made on time. Missing a payment can trigger a late fee under the terms published by Kmart and Afterpay. Kmart’s information page lists the following amounts:

These are retailer-published policy figures, not an independent statistic or a guarantee that the same amounts will remain in force. Check the current Afterpay terms presented for your account before relying on them. Keeping enough money in the linked card on each due date is the simplest way to avoid a late-payment charge.
Returns, exchanges and refunds
Kmart says items bought online with Afterpay may be returned to a local Kmart store for an exchange or refund, provided the return meets Kmart’s Returns Policy and does not fall under an exclusion. The payment method does not remove ordinary product, hygiene or time-limit restrictions in that policy.

When Kmart approves a refund for an Afterpay purchase, its returns FAQ says the money is credited to the customer’s Afterpay account. It is not normally handed over as cash at the Kmart counter. After the retailer processes the return, check the Afterpay account for the credit and for any adjustment to the remaining instalments. Keep the Kmart receipt and the Afterpay order information until the credit appears.

- Check Kmart’s current Returns Policy for the item category and any exclusion.
- Bring proof of purchase and the product in the condition required by that policy.
- Tell the store team that the original payment was Afterpay so the return is recorded against the correct transaction.
- After the return is accepted, verify the refund in the Afterpay app rather than expecting a cash payout.
Australia versus the United States
The country distinction is essential. Kmart Australia’s official pages explicitly mention Afterpay for online purchases, the Kmart app and all stores, including K hubs. Those statements support the Australia-specific instructions in this guide.
Kmart’s U.S. payment-method page lists gift cards and Mastercard, Visa and Discover. It does not list Afterpay. Because the page does not expressly say “Afterpay is unavailable,” the accurate conclusion is narrower: Afterpay is not among the payment methods published on that U.S. page. Do not transfer the Australian policy to a U.S. Kmart checkout, and check the payment options displayed for the relevant country before shopping.

Choose online checkout when you want the instalment schedule shown before ordering and your cart is within the stated A$2,000 ceiling. Choose in-store payment when you need to inspect products first and have a working digital wallet with the Afterpay Card.

- Check that you are 18 or older, live in Australia and have an Australian debit or credit card linked to Afterpay.
- Verify your email address and mobile number in the Afterpay account.
- For an online order, keep the cart at or below the published A$2,000 maximum and review delivery details and the complete total.

Common questions and fixes
Why is Afterpay missing from my Kmart checkout?
First confirm that the checkout is for Kmart Australia and that the cart is not above the published online limit. Sign in to the correct Afterpay account, check for overdue payments or verification requests and try the Kmart app or website again. If the option remains unavailable, the order may not meet Afterpay’s approval or product criteria; use the explanation shown by Afterpay rather than assuming Kmart has removed the service.

The supplied Kmart payment information confirms Afterpay as an accepted method but does not state a split-tender procedure. Ask the store before beginning a large transaction or follow only the payment combinations the checkout explicitly offers.
Does Kmart itself provide the Afterpay credit?
No. Kmart Australia states that Afterpay is not a service provided by Kmart; it is a facility offered by Afterpay Australia Pty Ltd. Kmart processes the retail sale and its returns, while Afterpay handles approval, instalments and applicable late fees.
Can I use an Australian Afterpay account at a U.S. Kmart?
Do not assume so. The Australian acceptance statements are country-specific, and the published U.S. Kmart payment list does not include Afterpay. Check the payment methods for the U.S. transaction directly.
Where should I look when a refund has not appeared?
Confirm first that Kmart accepted the return and that the refund was processed against the Afterpay transaction.
