After Two Weeks With the ROG Xbox Ally X, I Respect It Despite Its $999 Price

After nearly two weeks, the ROG Xbox Ally X is easy to respect and hard to recommend unconditionally. Its unusually comfortable controls, broad access to Xbox and PC game stores, and strong 1080p performance make it one of the most capable Windows handhelds. However, the $999 US launch price (or £799 in the UK) is difficult to justify unless portable access to a large PC and Xbox library matters more to you than display quality, battery life, or value.

Comfort is the Ally X’s clearest advantage

The strongest case for the Ally X is its shape. Pocket Tactics called the form factor excellent, while FullCleared’s Jason Siu wrote that “the main reason to consider this device is its comfort.” The grips, controls and weight distribution make extended sessions feel more natural than on many flat Windows handhelds.

The layout is not perfect. Pocket Tactics found that the pause button sits beneath the library button, making accidental launches of the Xbox app possible. That is a small irritation, but it matters when you are trying to navigate quickly during a game.

Connectivity is practical rather than extravagant: there are two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Those ports support charging, displays, storage and peripherals, although a dock or hub is optional rather than included in the core experience.

The screen is sharp and fast, but not an OLED upgrade

Specification ROG Xbox Ally X
Panel 7-inch IPS touchscreen
Resolution and aspect ratio 1920 × 1080, 16:9
Refresh rate Up to 120Hz
Brightness Approximately 500 nits

The display is responsive, attractive and bright enough for most indoor play. Its 120Hz refresh rate is useful when a game can sustain high frame rates, and the 1080p resolution gives text and interface elements a clean appearance.

What it does not provide is OLED contrast. Reviewers also noted that the panel is not a major upgrade over earlier Ally hardware. Dark scenes therefore lack the deeper blacks and punchier contrast available on an OLED handheld, which weakens the value proposition at this price.

Performance is strong, with game-by-game compromises

The Ally X can run demanding modern games at 1080p, but there is no universal “maximum settings” profile. Pocket Tactics reported playable results in The Last of Us Part 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with settings adjusted by title. Frame generation can push some games beyond 60 frames per second, but it brings image-quality and latency trade-offs.

The Independent’s testing illustrates the range. Forza Horizon 5 streamed at 1080p and 60fps over a 350Mbps connection, while Destiny 2 reached 1080p at 120fps. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ran at about 30fps. Other demanding games showed title-specific stutter, texture pop-in or resolution compromises.

GLITCHED described the device as capable and solid, but measured roughly a 15 percent performance gain over the previous model in its comparisons. That is meaningful for a new buyer, yet modest for an existing Ally owner deciding whether to upgrade.

Battery life is the main practical limitation

The Ally X uses an 80Wh battery, but demanding games can still exhaust it quickly. Pocket Tactics and The Independent both averaged a little over two hours in demanding use. Actual runtime changes with the game, frame rate, brightness, wireless activity and performance profile.

Preset Power target Observed estimate
Turbo 35W Not stated in the reviewed measurements
Turbo 25W Just over two hours in demanding play
Performance 17W Roughly three hours
Silent 13W About four hours

The lower-power modes are therefore important, not merely presets for testing. Performance mode can make a travel session more manageable, while Silent mode is suited to lighter games, emulation or streaming. The trade-off is reduced performance, so a single battery figure cannot represent every use case.

It feels like a handheld PC with Xbox integration, not a portable Series X

The Xbox app’s full-screen layer gives the Ally X a more console-like starting point. Xbox, the Microsoft Store and Steam are available, alongside Battle.net, the EA app, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy and Ubisoft Connect. That breadth is a major advantage for anyone with games spread across multiple libraries.

Windows remains the source of friction. Desktop prompts, launchers, updates and occasional controller-navigation issues still appear beneath the Xbox-focused interface. The result is better described as a Windows handheld with Xbox integration than as a drop-in replacement for an Xbox Series X|S console.

Cloud and remote-play options can extend what the hardware does. The Independent’s Forza test shows that a strong network can deliver a console-like stream, but that experience depends on connection quality and latency rather than the Ally X alone.

At $999, the value depends on your priorities

Decision factor What the Ally X offers Important qualification
Comfort and controls Excellent ergonomics for long sessions Pause and library buttons can be easy to hit accidentally
Native performance Strong 1080p results in many modern games Settings, frame generation and resolution vary by title
Display 120Hz, 1080p touchscreen at about 500 nits IPS, not OLED; reviewers saw no major display advance
Battery 80Wh capacity with 17W and 13W modes Demanding play averages only a little over two hours
Software Xbox plus a wide range of PC storefronts Windows still adds setup and navigation friction
Price $999 in the United States; £799 in the United Kingdom Overlaps with some gaming-laptop budgets and exceeds many handheld alternatives

Steam Deck OLED is the obvious lower-cost comparison for buyers who value an OLED screen and a more focused handheld interface. Earlier ROG Ally models may also deliver enough performance for less money. The Ally X earns its premium mainly through comfort, broad storefront access and the convenience of running Windows games directly; its display and battery do not provide a matching leap.

Accessories worth planning for

A USB-C dock or hub

A dock or hub is useful if you want a monitor, wired network, keyboard, mouse or several USB devices. Because the Ally X has two USB-C ports, you can choose a compact hub for travel or a fuller dock for a desk setup. No specific dock was established as tested, so compatibility and power delivery should be checked before purchase.

A protective case

The Independent noted that a case is not included. A fitted protective case is sensible for commuting or air travel, particularly because the handheld’s controls and sticks can be exposed in a bag.

A higher-capacity charger

Long demanding sessions require access to power. A charger and cable that can sustain the handheld’s higher power modes are more useful than relying on a low-wattage phone charger, which may charge slowly or limit performance.

Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?

  • Buy it if comfort is your top priority and you want one handheld for Xbox, Steam and other PC launchers.
  • Buy it if you are willing to tune settings and use Performance or Silent mode to extend battery life.
  • Consider alternatives if OLED contrast, all-day portability or a lower purchase price matters more than Windows flexibility.
  • Skip the upgrade if you already own a recent Ally and expected a dramatic performance or display transformation; the measured gain is about 15 percent and the panel remains broadly familiar.

Verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X is a comfortable, powerful piece of kit, and that comfort is not a minor detail: it is what makes the device enjoyable to use for hours. Its 1080p performance, 120Hz panel and access to nearly every major PC storefront make it unusually versatile. But demanding games still deliver only a little over two hours per charge, Windows remains imperfect, and the IPS display is not a generational upgrade. At $999, it is worth considering only when portability, ergonomics and Xbox/PC library access are your highest priorities.
