Elavenil Valarivan won two silver medals at the Asian Games in Japan in September 2026: one in the women’s 10m air rifle individual event and one in the team event. It was her first medal at the Games, and she described the result as a confidence boost. The “rock off her back” framing captures the relief of that breakthrough—not a claim that pressure or challenges have vanished.
What Elavenil Valarivan won at the Asian Games
Valarivan took silver in the women’s 10m air rifle individual final, then added another silver with teammates Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod in the women’s team event. India’s reported team total was 1898.0, 0.9 points ahead of the hosts, according to India Today’s September 21, 2026 event report.

A narrow individual-final margin
Japan’s Hinata Taichi scored 253.0 to win the individual gold; Valarivan scored 252.4. The 0.6-point gap made it a close finish, and India Today reported Taichi’s total as an Asian Games record. The result was still a landmark for Valarivan: two medals in one day and her first Asian Games medal. India Today’s event report and The Indian Express account reported the scores and margin.

Before this result, Valarivan had competed at three Olympic and Asian Games events—two Olympics and one Asian Games—without winning a Games medal, according to India Today’s event report. The Indian Express described setbacks along the way: a rifle malfunction at the 2018 Asian Games, missing the Hangzhou team, and finishing outside the final at Tokyo and Paris. Those moments form part of her career context, not a measure of her ability or the whole story of her progress.

Valarivan called the day “a very, very, very joyous day” because it brought her first Games medal. She also said, “It’s a big confidence-booster,” and added, “Now, I am even more inclined to be a better version of myself for the upcoming competitions.” Both comments were reported by India Today in its September 21 event coverage.
How Valarivan says her approach has changed
In the same interview, Valarivan said she had begun to enjoy the sport, being part of the team and representing India, rather than treating winning as the only destination. That change in emphasis is her own account; it is not evidence that competition has become easy or that results no longer matter to her.

After the close individual final, she reflected on what she might learn from it: “I could have been a little more patient in taking my shots and, possibly worked a little more on my breathing.” She also told reporters, as quoted by India Today, “There could be a lot of things that I could have done differently, but again, learning is the part that I’m looking more into right now.” These are her reflections on the final, not proof that any single adjustment would have changed the result.
