Indian Railways has planned 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes, but the pantry car reported for a new variant and its production or service date are not yet independently confirmed by the official sources available. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off from Malda Town on 17 January 2026; that launch is separate from the larger-rake plans.
What is the 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper?
It is a longer configuration of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, intended for long- and medium-distance inter-state journeys. Indian Railways’ 2024–25 Year Book, which reports 2023–24 planning, envisaged 50 sleeper rakes in a 24-car configuration for manufacture at Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. It also listed 10 planned 16-car sleeper trains. These are historical planning figures, not evidence that all those rakes have been built or approved for a specific service. A Times of India report published on 12 October 2026 describes a 24-coach version with a pantry car. The official planning and programme statements cited below establish 24-car planning and a wider manufacturing programme, but do not independently confirm that this particular configuration includes a pantry car.

The first train has been flagged off
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off from Malda Town on 17 January 2026. That was a completed launch event; it does not establish when a 24-coach version will enter service. The same-day government announcement reported the flag-off, while BEML said it had been entrusted with designing and developing 10 sleeper trainsets. The sleeper programme is being phased
In a parliamentary response on 4 February 2026, the Ministry of Railways said 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes were planned for manufacture. It described a phased process covering prototype development, trials and series production by BEML, ICF Chennai and technology partners. Regular passenger-service induction, the Ministry said, would depend on demand and operational readiness. The response does not give a service date for the 24-coach pantry-equipped variant. How do the 16- and 24-coach plans differ?
| Comparison | 16-coach configuration | 24-coach configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Planning figure in the Year Book | 10 planned trains, as reported for 2023–24 planning. | 50 planned rakes, envisaged for manufacture at ICF Chennai, as reported for 2023–24 planning. Indian Railways Year Book 2024–25 |
| Pantry car | Not stated in the cited official planning source. | Included in the Times of India report’s description; not independently confirmed by the cited official sources. Times of India report, 12 October 2026 |
| Passenger capacity | Not stated for this comparison in the cited sources. | Not stated for this specific configuration in the cited sources. |
| Service date for this configuration | The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off on 17 January 2026; this does not establish a date for every configuration. Press Information Bureau | Not stated in the cited official sources. |
The 10, 50 and 260 figures refer to different dates and programme scopes. They should not be added together or treated as a single final procurement count. The Ministry’s later figure of 260 is for the overall sleeper-rake manufacturing plan, while the earlier Year Book records 2023–24 planning.

The Ministry’s February 2026 response lists the following trainset features. These are Ministry-stated specifications and claims, not independent assessments of real-world performance on every route. Ministry of Railways parliamentary response, 4 February 2026
- KAVACH, crashworthy car-body design and fire-barrier doors.
- Aerosol-based fire detection and suppression in electrical cabinets and lavatories.
- Regenerative braking, automatic plug doors and sealed, wider gangways.
- CCTV, passenger emergency talk-back and centralized coach monitoring.
- Accessibility provisions and ergonomically designed upper-berth ladders.
- A stated design speed of 180 km/h and operating speed of 160 km/h. These figures do not mean the train will run at either speed on every route.
The Ministry also claims that the stated UV-C air-disinfection system deactivates 99% of harmful bacteria. That is the Ministry’s product-feature claim, not an independently assessed health outcome. The Year Book additionally identifies improved crashworthiness and semi-permanent or semi-automatic couplers among the sleeper version’s features. Indian Railways Year Book 2024–25
Is the 24-coach train better than Rajdhani Express?
The Times of India report frames the features as better than Rajdhani Express, but the available sources do not provide an independent, like-for-like metric establishing that the Vande Bharat Sleeper is better overall. A meaningful comparison would need to specify what is being compared—such as speed, accommodation, safety systems, journey time or service on a particular route—and use comparable evidence. Coach count alone does not establish passenger capacity or overall superiority.
When will the 24-coach version start running?
No specific production or passenger-service date for the reported 24-coach pantry-equipped rake is established in the cited official material. The Ministry’s stated approach is phased: develop prototypes, conduct trials, proceed with series production and induct trains into regular service according to demand and operational readiness. Until Indian Railways or ICF confirms this particular configuration and a schedule, the 12 October 2026 report is the source for the pantry-car detail, not an official confirmation of deployment.
