It can be—but only if you need a general-purpose desktop and the complete Raspberry Pi build costs about as much. The likely $260 alternative is the GMK NucBox G3 Pro, reported at $259 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. That is a mini PC, not a confirmed bundle with a keyboard, mouse or monitor, and the reported price is not guaranteed to be current. For GPIO projects, low power use or a deliberately small system, a Raspberry Pi may still make more sense.
First, what is the “$260 8GB kit”?
The product that most closely matches the title is the GMK NucBox G3 Pro. TechRadar reported a U.S. Amazon listing at $259 for a configuration with an Intel Core i3-10110U, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB M.2 SATA storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its review says the memory and storage are upgradeable. The report does not establish that the listing includes peripherals, and the exact current price, availability and seller configuration can change. TechRadar’s review is the cited source for those product details.

So the useful question is whether an 8GB mini PC is a better complete purchase than a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB build for your workload—not whether one $260 product beats a bare board on price.
Why the Raspberry Pi comparison changed in 2026
Raspberry Pi announced a $30 increase for 8GB variants on February 2, 2026, attributing it to rising memory costs. On April 1, the company announced a further $50 increase for 8GB Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants. The April announcement separately listed a $150 increase for the Raspberry Pi 500+ kit; that is a different product and price change, not an additional board increase. Raspberry Pi also said LPDDR4 DRAM used on Pi 4 and Pi 5 had risen seven-fold over the preceding year. The February announcement and the April announcement explain the changes.

The April statement said 1GB and 2GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants remained between $35 and $65, and the 4GB Pi 400 remained $60 at that time. Those are dated manufacturer statements, not current street-price guarantees. They also show why a lower-memory Pi remains relevant if your project does not need 8GB.
Compare complete systems, not a board with a PC
A Raspberry Pi board price omits items that may be essential to a working setup: storage, a case, power supply and sometimes cooling. Jeff Geerling’s January 5, 2026 comparison put a fully configured 16GB/512GB Pi 5 system at $246.95 and a similarly specified GMKtec mini PC at $246.99. The Pi configuration included storage, case, cooler and power adapter. That is a useful illustration of price parity in one configuration, not a universal price comparison or a direct comparison with the 8GB NucBox. Geerling’s comparison lists the build assumptions.

Before choosing, add the actual accessories you will buy to the Pi board price and compare that total with the live mini PC listing. Do not treat the $259 report or the separate $246.95/$246.99 comparison as a current quote.

Which one fits the work you want to do?
Choose the mini PC for a conventional desktop role
The NucBox is the stronger candidate when you want a compact x86 computer with included RAM, storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and your software expects a conventional PC environment. Tom’s Hardware summarizes the broad tradeoff as more performance from Intel mini PCs versus lower power use from Raspberry Pi, but that is not a benchmark for every application. Choose a Raspberry Pi for GPIO and board-level projects
If your project depends on GPIO pins, Raspberry Pi add-ons or a board-oriented embedded setup, the Pi has a purpose the mini PC does not replace. A compact x86 machine can be a better desktop without being a better electronics platform. Confirm the specific interfaces and add-ons your project needs before buying.
Consider power and memory needs, not just headline price
Raspberry Pi remains the lower-power choice in the broad comparison reported by Tom’s Hardware, which can matter for an always-on device. Conversely, paying for 8GB makes little sense if your workload does not need it. Raspberry Pi’s April announcement emphasized right-sizing memory and compute; its lower-memory variants were listed at $35–$65 at that time. Those historical prices do not establish what you will pay now.

A practical buying checklist
- List the workload. Decide whether you need a desktop operating environment, a GPIO platform, an always-on low-power device or a specific application. The cited sources do not establish an application-by-application compatibility matrix or measured speed ratio.
- Verify the mini PC configuration. Check the live listing for the exact NucBox model, processor, memory, storage, included accessories, seller and price. The reported $259 price is a dated U.S. listing, not a guaranteed offer.
- Build the Pi total. Add the board and every required storage, case, power and cooling component. Include peripherals only if you need to buy them.
- Check interfaces and software. Confirm that required GPIO, add-ons, operating systems and applications work on the platform you choose; the cited reporting does not certify specific compatibility.
- Compare power and upgrade needs. Favor the Pi where lower power is important, or the NucBox where its x86 setup and reported upgradeable memory and storage suit your plans.
