Early hands-on time with Final Fantasy VII Revelation points to combat as the game’s strongest new idea, and two party members do most of the work: Cid, a spear-wielding Dragoon with unusually mobile attacks, and Vincent, whose handgun gives way to a more aggressive transformed form. Kotaku’s Kenneth Shepard came away convinced that the final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy holds some of the series’ best material. His impression comes from a short demo, so read it as a judgment about how the game plays, not as a review of the finished game or a settled verdict on it.
What the demo showed
Cid: a Dragoon built around movement
Shepard describes Cid as a Dragoon whose style depends on distance and timing. In his words: “Cid is a Dragoon, which means that he wields a spear and has a playstyle characterized by leaping across the scrap to bring down his weapon on foes.” Shepard singles out three things he likes about the character: his speed, how quickly he can switch between targets, and his ability to stagger enemies.

Vincent: a ranged fighter who changes shape
Vincent starts as a ranged character with a handgun. He can also transform into a Galian Beast, which brings a close-range style that is more aggressive. Shepard’s point is that the transformation effectively gives Vincent two playstyles. He writes: “He’s almost two characters in one, and after playing as him for a bit, I couldn’t imagine relying on previous ranged characters if I didn’t have to.”

Coverage describes FITS as a system for equipping job-based abilities to any party member. That matters because it can refresh characters the player already knows. In Shepard’s demo, Cloud used the Summoner FITS to call Shiva and Titan. That is the one concrete example in the coverage so far, and the previews do not break down how the full feature works.
#1 Best Overall
The combat loop
Combat is described as a mix of real-time action and tactical decision-making. Players switch between the three party members, use Synergy attacks, and draw on resources the whole party shares. Shepard’s enthusiasm is tied to how these parts work together in play, not to any one ability on its own.
How much the early previews covered
Two outlets have published hands-on impressions, and they touched different parts of the game.

| Preview | Date | Session length | What it covered | What it did not reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kotaku, Kenneth Shepard | October 8, 2026 | Described as a short demo session; exact length not stated | Cid, Vincent and his Galian Beast form, FITS (Cloud using Summoner), real-time and tactical combat | Not stated |
| SmashPad, Danreb Victorio (PAX West 2026) | September 10, 2026 | 45 minutes | Highwind travel, regional exploration, Costa del Sol, Gold Saucer content and minigames | FITS; the session ran out of time before reaching it |
The gap matters. The outlet that covered the exploration and minigame side never reached FITS, and the outlet that praised the combat did not cover the regional content. Neither preview tests the whole game, so each one supports only a narrow claim.

Shepard’s reservations
Shepard is enthusiastic about how the game plays but cautious about the rest of it. His two main concerns are:
Rank #3
- The Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PS5 controller skin (inside the case) featuring Cloud and Sephiroth. This PS5 controller skin provides full coverage without buttons or sensor interference.
- An Expansive World: As the party searches for Sephiroth, explore the beautiful, expansive regions of the world and open up new areas to discover through unique forms of transportation
- Deepen their relationships to unleash powerful team based combos
- An Evolved Battle System: Combine strategic thinking with thrilling action combat alongside your comrades, including newly added characters
- Beyond the Walls of Fate: In this standalone adventure for fans and newcomers, Cloud and his comrades venture across the planet, their fates unwritten, making each step outside the dystopian city of Midgar fresh and mysterious
- Story: his reservations about the story of the Remake trilogy may carry over to Revelation.
- Minigames: he worries that minigame bloat could get in the way of the main experience.
These are Shepard’s opinions about what might happen, not outcomes the demo established. SmashPad’s account of Gold Saucer and the other minigames describes what is available, but its 45-minute session did not show whether that content crowds out the main game.

Editions and where to verify them
- Steam: the pre-purchase listing describes standalone and bundled editions. The page opens to an age-check screen, so confirm what each edition includes there. This was checked on October 9, 2026.
- Retail: the sources cited here do not confirm an Amazon listing or a physical release. Before buying anywhere, check the exact title, platform, and whether the product is physical or digital.
- Rebirth: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the preceding entry in the trilogy. It is the context to know if you plan to play through the series in order.
How to read the praise
The early coverage supports a few claims more firmly than others. Keep these distinctions in mind:
Best Value
- As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, the final battle against Sephiroth begins. A meteor mars the sky, monstrous planetary guardians wreak havoc across the globe, and the fires of war rage. Now, Cloud and his companions must stand against this chaos to not only decide the planet's fate, but to bring a legendary conflict to its conclusion.
- In the final chapter of the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series, the scale has never been larger, and the stakes have never been higher. Take to the skies and explore a boundless world, fight alongside a fully assembled party, master strategic and dynamic combat, and prepare yourself for the climactic finale. A vast planet awaits. Everything leads here.
- Explore the World on a Planetary Scale - Soar the skies with your airship—the Highwind—and explore a vast, interconnected world. Choose where to drop and skydive down to areas of interest across a wide variety of biomes, cities, and remote frontiers.
- An Iconic Ensemble, Fully United - Fight alongside a roster of unique companions, including newly playable party members Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine. Each character brings distinct combat roles and abilities to the fray, greatly expanding your strategic options.
- Refined Action and Strategy - Experience the series’ iconic hybrid of real time action and command based combat in its most polished form yet. Seamlessly switch between party members, issue commands in Tactical Mode, and unleash powerful abilities and synergies to overcome colossal threats.
- Supported by the previews: Cid’s mobility, Vincent’s two-part style, Cloud’s Summoner FITS demo, and the hybrid of real-time and tactical combat.
- Not yet supported: how FITS works across the full cast, how the story turns out, how much the minigames intrude, and how the finished game performs over a long playthrough.
The sensible reading of Shepard’s enthusiasm is that the combat ideas look promising enough to make the next few months worth watching. The conclusion that Square saved the best for last is a hope, not a finding yet.
